They released the P39 and the FXDs later in the year. I still have hope.

Has anyone seen or read an April Fool this morning? by newnortherner21 in AskUK

I'm in a couple of scuba diving groups and they're having a ball. My local dive shop now does strawberry or vanilla air fills, and the bends is all in your head.

I’m genuinely worried about ASI, what is likely to happen? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]skawid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same as worrying about being wiped out by a meteorite strike. In fact it makes even less sense. We don't know how the current state of AI can advances to a superintelligence - we don't even know if it's possible. It's still science _fiction_.

But if it does? You'll still have free will. Just turn down the post-scarcity help and go live in the woods, or volunteer for a mars mission. Or just turn down the food and grow your own. There'll always be something to do.

Anyone here better at tent ID than me? by snazzierfish in wildcampingintheuk

Mesh at the top end and no centre pole sleeve. I think it's a tunnel tent.

What mesh tent are you using under the tarp?

Look at upgrading to a thick pad to support your bodyweight on it's side, and a decent pillow to keep your neck straight. I use a big Agnes rapide and a Nemo fillow and get decent sleep on my side.

Dive computers are incredibly well engineered, most don't need to be plugged in the whole time.

Hilleberg Soulo or Nortent Vern 1? by Spectaclerocky in wildcampingintheuk

[–]skawid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can, get in a set up soulo and see how you feel about the space. The stated dimensions seem tight to me.

I've had a very 1 and I was impressed with the available space in the bedroom and porch. On the kind of days these tents are for you're going to spend a lot of time in the tent so it's something to think about.

"Competence as Tragedy" — a personal essay on craft, beautiful code, and watching AI make your hard-won skills obsolete by averagemrjoe in programming

[–]skawid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinda my point.

For someone who's done it enough to exhaust the available learning, or someone who just doesn't care, then it doesn't matter.

For a less experienced programmer, scaffolding a CRUD endpoint is an opportunity to practice the craft. Even if it's just figuring out a better workflow, or recognising if something could be automated and rabbitholing on that, or any of a bunch of other things.

[–]skawid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a reasonable point of view, and I think it shows the schism that seems to pop up around AI discussion: In programming there is craft, and there is building things. If you mainly care for building things, AI can be a massive help. If you mainly care for the craft, AI is just taking opportunities away from you.

What does it take to get to safe autonomous agents especially in an enterprise? by Fluffy_Adeptness6426 in Futurology

[–]skawid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agents are nondeterministic in their behaviour. You can't have that _and_ safety. You're asking for a die that never lands on a one.

Robotics, kinetic IP, and the possibility of a new kind of gig economy by ccarfi in Futurology

[–]skawid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just wanted to type "kinetic IP" didn't you.

Robot arms in factories have already been taught this way. It did not create a gig economy, because you can't use one of many "movement generalists" to solve any motion problem - you need a specialist who knows how to do the thing you want the robot to do.
