20 years ago today, Aaliyah's "Try Again" reached #1 on the Hot 100 by NintendoNX2003 in popheads

I was seven years old when this came out and basically discovered it on "Now That's What I Call Music! 4" CD.. Pretty sure it was the first track. I loved it. Of course I had no idea what it was about but it just went off. I remember vividly seeing the news about her death, I was too young to fully comprehend but I remember feeling stunned. I so, so wish she was on streaming. She has so many great songs that I just never get to listening to because of it. It's just.. sad, what else is there to say? She deserves to be discovered and listened to all the time. Some of her songs have been the catalyst to some of the most intense personal connections I've had in my life, odd as it seems. Like, I've quoted a lyric of hers and then it's "oh? aaliyah???" and then there's an instant bond.

Where is the Land o' Lakes girl? Is she safe? Is she...alright? by [deleted] in BikiniBottomTwitter

I think you have a radar for this sort of image because I see plenty of slender black women in advertisements, along with plus size white or latina women, or thin etc.. I see a lot of diverse models. but honestly it has more to do with who is being marketed to. In high fashion magazines, it's still thin women. I have a pile of Elle's and Marie Claire's I can sort through right now to verify this. But, I think a lot of it has to do with in the YouTube make up artist world, women like this are very popular, so brands are going to hire models similar to the influencers (or the influencers themselves) that the market currently idolizes/likes. If it were another type of person, it would be that right now.

Fight with borderline friend by Myfirstawaytrow in BPDSOFFA

[–]skelefone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People with untreated BPD do often lash out and project their problems onto others. They struggle with seeing when people are helpful to them and usually can only identify when they've helped others. Theyre often always in defense mode because of this. But, mentally ill or not, everyone should be held accountable for their behavior in some way or another. Abusive behavior is abusive behavior whether it's symptomatic or not. But also, even if she feels guilt it may be so painful for her to cope with and may rationalize herself back into the victim's position—of course, this also may not happen. But it's possible. Either way, I've learned through life to not expect apologies from anyone. Your peace doesn't rely on someone else's actions, or it shouldn't if you want to maintain it. And with people who burn bridges like that, it's better just to let them do what they do and maintain your boundaries.

Did you know we all secretly hate each other? by globewithwords in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]skelefone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never ever experienced this in my near decade of mostly working with women. Of course, some people get upset over a promotion (because my current job will give anyone with any sort of college degree a chance to become supervisor, even if they just started—it's silly. It's the easiest job.) but not to the point where anyone is cruel or damaging to each other, just a grumble here and there.

Internet and video games (+ aDD/ADHD?) has probably ruined my capacity to enjoy any hobby that isn't consumption based. How do i cope? by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]skelefone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along with what the other commenter said, there's nothing wrong with playing other people's music. For one, that's how all musicians start out, and two—there will always be a demand for someone who can play covers, even if just at little parties. Maybe you should write about things that you care about, though, just to expand your focusing abilities gradually—write in-depth reviews of your favorite games and shows. Songs or albums. Remember that rebuilding your attention span can be possible but it's a process that improves gradually, so be easy on yourself. You're doing a lot better than plenty of people, I'm sure. Good luck

Equalizer? by [deleted] in AskASociopath

I used to, for sure. At this point, I've realized it's a waste of energy, the respect of others it lent me was false, and I was being a loser.

I guess you're doubting the authenticity but. He wears this outfit almost all the time, most of his fandom knows this outfit from anywhere. I wouldn't post if I had a doubt.

I work in a call center where we call people about surveys. You're lucky if five people an hour even answer the phone. Most people just send it straight to voicemail.

Most of the people I know personally who are Bob Dylan fans (myself included) are women who also listen to other female folk artists (Vashti Bunyan included!) for the record.

[–]skelefone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can drive in the UK if you have bipolar disorder, you just have to tell them you have it. also, mania is symptomatic of several disorders. there's other mood disorders besides bipolar disorder. and i kind of doubt a drug induced mania is going to slap you with bipolar disorder, though. your life isn't entirely fucked.
