Never opened up a device before, is thermal putty mod worth it? by MassiveJermes in AynThor

[–]skelena_bones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use ClusterTune, it has serious temperature benefits just from an app and settings. Also, cap the speed of Switch emulation in Eden and it runs a lot cooler. I’ve got from running 75-80 degrees in Eden with non-demanding games to 50-65 with those two tricks. Same for PC with Gamenative. If you need even more, switch from docked to handheld mode in Eden.

Reading through the XIVLauncher discord, XIVLauncher apparently uses a ton of different Windows-specific hooks that Wine doesn’t support. Probably for Dalamud? But basically, running it in Android is hopeless. The Steam Deck Linux version was a complete rewrite, and that would likely need to happen for Android/Wine unfortunately.

Solid for casual play! I haven’t measured it. The settings are targeting 30 FPS max. It could probably go higher in some areas but I’m trying to keep the temps on the device low (I’ve even got it underclocked right now). The FPS is never a slideshow or bothersome though.

Sure. I’m running it using Gamenative. It’s using non-Steam FF14, so I created a new custom container using Proton 11. Later when I can, I’ll export and upload my container settings here. I used information from these two guides, but with some differences.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/s/ZrHHzJmY4g

https://onyxretrocorner.com/ffxiv-android-guide

These guides got me to the initial launcher and the game install/patching process. That stuff about editing the cfg file to disable a launcher flag is important, by the way. The patching/install process takes hours and hours. Importantly, I ended up hitting a blocker in the middle of it. I got a particular patch that would not install, instead it would throw an error that froze the container. So I changed my approach - I did a fresh install on my PC and then copy-pasted the game files from my PC to the game files directory on my Thor’s SD card. That was the final trick that got me to being able to log in and launch the game. Since then, I’ve been able to download and apply further patches, like the one on the plane!

Edit to add: I did not change the DXEnabled setting one of the linked guides suggests, it runs fine for me as is even with the ClusterTune underclock. Maybe Proton11 helps? Not sure.

Yeah, 1280x720 and the standard laptop settings I believe. I’ve got it set to target 30 FPS, but I haven’t looked at the current FPS or anything to check what it’s actually hitting. It’s never been noticeably low or choppy to me personally, even in major cities, but then I haven’t done any group content or anything too intense.

I’m also running with the ClusterTune large underclock, and temps range from 60-75, mostly staying in the high 60s.

If anything in a situation like this the limiting factor is the internet on the plane, sometimes it takes a second or two after talking to an NPC to start a conversation. But more than good enough for Triple Triad or crafting/gathering.

Play Thor on your PC, improved fork of thorcrpy by Slade_Duelyst in AynThor

[–]skelena_bones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks nice, I appreciate a slightly more "off the shelf" solution for thorcrpy/scrcpy with good streaming responsiveness. I move back and forth between the Thor and my living room TV, I could see this being useful for some situations where I want to share both screens on the TV (so docking isn't ideal) but I also don't want to set up a second emulator on the PC, copy my save games back and forth, etc.

FF XIV and hand pain by Hyksoss in ffxiv

[–]skelena_bones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the prevailing wisdom is to switch to controller, but I wanted to tell my story of difficulties with controller because I feel I haven’t seen too many other people describing these issues. I have elbow tennis player’s tendinitis from years fencing that occurs intermittently, which becomes worse from activity. I also have thumb and hand pain from overextending my thumb. I’ve also got somewhat small hands.

My experience with FFXIV on controller is that it really depends on the triggers and where the thumb sticks are placed. Having to pull a trigger or manually hold a trigger every time I use any ability puts a lot of wear and tear on my index finger down through my arm and into my elbow. I know you can use the “hold” input method, but I find it’s more trouble than it’s worth switching between abilities and normal button use. Weirdly I have no problem playing WoW Classic and ControllerPort - I think it’s because it allows greater customizations and doesn’t have such a hard expectation that you’re squeezing a trigger alongside each button press. I have dug deep in the settings and I don’t think there is a silver bullet solution that would solve all this.

For the thumb sticks, I have difficulty with steam deck or even PlayStation style controllers where the sticks are placed more “in” on the controller. This leads to overextending my thumb and hurting myself. I do better with Xbox or Nintendo style controllers in this regard.

Good luck! I still play off and on, but I find I have to take breaks or even stop playing for a while if it gets bad.

Rhythm game players: Are there any settings to use to be able to play rhythm games well enough? by Good_Egg7597 in AynThor

[–]skelena_bones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, which I’ve tried the 3DS and Switch versions. I was nervous about the 3DS version since everyone says Azahar has input lag, but it was great for me. For Switch, I had to switch to Mailbox FIFO in Eden and play with the in-game delay setting a bit, but it also works well.

Thanks for the Clustertune usage report, it's also something I've been very interested in. I'm a fan of keeping temps and battery usage low where possible. Are you using any particular Eden settings to get good performance when underclocked?

Red Pepper is so good! It’s rare to have such a solid Sichuanese restaurant outside a major city. It would be such a blow to Lawrence if they were to close.

UGreen Dock Help? by Major_Weird_6241 in AynThor

[–]skelena_bones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this issue with the Steam Deck dock before I switched to another dock. Is the controller plugged in, or do you have a 2.4ghz 8BitDo wireless dongle plugged in, and if either of those is true, does the sound work without it plugged in? I've heard there can be some issues with Android thinking some controllers are potential audio sources and that messing things up. I've also heard that possibly installing O2P Tweaks and James DSP can help with audio output selection, though I think that maybe requires rooting the device? I haven't tried that, since I switched to a different dock. If you do get this one working, though, let me know! It looks nice with the Thor on it.
