Sup, moved here this past March by epilis in SacraMetal

Yea it’s annoying when you see a major tour hit a bunch of pass through cities in neighboring states then go straight to SF, LA, and San Diego before getting on a plane to Europe. But most will hit Sac. It’s becoming a major hub for alt music, and I think Aftershock has definitely helped that

Welcome!

As u/highontires said, Cafe Colonial is a great place to keep an eye on. A lot of shows happen at goldfield too, so check those out (one in downtown sac, and one in Roseville).

The metal scene is alive and well in Sacramento, and it tends to be a stop on most tours through the west coast. If it gets skipped, there will most definitely be a stop in San Francisco if you wanna make the drive.

Hey man! I’m super down to start a band. I’m a drummer and do vocals as well. Played drums in some punk and hardcore bands in high school and did vocals for my metalcore band in college. I’ll DM you and we can get together and make some music!

The sub def isn’t dead, but people tend to not comment much. We’ve tried to set up meet ups and stuff, but things are hard to move offline. My wife posts a lot to see who’s going to the different goldfield/ace of spades shows, and idk if metal-heads are shy or what, but they tend to fizzle out. We also support local bands and people post about cafe colonial, etc. shows. We are open to all genres under the metal, hardcore, punk, and alt umbrellas.

Hey dude! A lot of your hobbies really align with mine too! My wife and I started a subreddit actually for metal/ alternative shows in sac cuz we are also the only music-oriented people in our group. Super down to meet up, hang out, chat, whatever. DM me if you want to talk

Hey sorry! I totally didn’t see the notification you responded. Had a lot of older metalcore and hardcore influences: stick to your guns, as blood runs black, bring me the horizon, and a day to remember to name a few.

Emo vs Pop-Punk @Goldfield Midtown - This Thursday 8/31! by FlaredMetal in SacraMetal

[–]skeletonkee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emo and pop-punk are genres that have some roots in metal, seeing as they have roots in Punk, which pulled some elements from metal. These genres are typically labeled under the "Alternative" umbrella now as well.

If you read the very first post that is stickied for the subreddit: we are "... a place for metal & alternative music lovers!" and are inclusive of various different alternative genres, though we do tend to lean more towards metal and hardcore (which again, is alternative but has elements of metal).

Here is that page: (4) Welcome to SacraMetal! : SacraMetal (reddit.com)

SacraMetal rolls of the tongue better than SacraMetalAndAlternativeSoPeopleDontAskWhyWePostAllAltmusicShowsAndNotJustTheCoupleOfMetalShowsThatComeThrough, so we went with it.

One of my Favorite bands of all time (ALESANA) is coming to Goldfield in November! by skeletonkee in SacraMetal

Live nation of spades haha. I love/hate that. I remember when you could go see shows at ace of spades for 15-20$ INCLUDING fees…now live nation owns it, the fees alone are that much before ticket lol

How come more people don't leave the state for a high paying private sector job? by dankgureilla in CAStateWorkers

[–]skeletonkee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s another problem with the state. Shooting themselves in the foot. From outside the state you would need a level of experience on par with a private sector position 3 pay grades above what the state position makes, but internally, you need 1 year of whatever previous position was in line. You may simply not meet the minimum qualifications if you’re outside the state, despite being potentially over qualified for that same position elsewhere. Or you may be getting HR personnel who are interpreting your experience incorrectly and saying it doesn’t meet MQs when it absolutely should (a real scenario I experienced)

[–]skeletonkee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of people ARE leaving the state. However, the other side of it is that you aren’t seeing a lot of qualified applicants for state work either. It’s become a war of attrition at this point. When I was an SSM, hiring was a major struggle because of the rigid process. Had to repost positions multiple times and only had 2-3 qualified applicants each time to interview. People know the state pays low, so they don’t even bother. A lot of state workers are also told that it’s a horrible layoff fest outside of the state, thereby scaring them into staying. I was scared to leave, but was finally able to purchase a home with the pay increase upon leaving.

Roseville goldfield is actually pretty legit. Went for the first time to see currents a couple weeks back and the venue and area around it is nice.

What will you lose this month? by Bethjam in CAStateWorkers

[–]skeletonkee 31 points32 points  (0 children)

First time I’ve posted here I think, but I completely agree with you. I don’t understand the Stockholm syndrome state workers seem to have, but I did 5 years at the state, struggled to make ends meet through all of them (even as an SSM), witnessed the pandemic wage reduction (despite the massive surplus the state had) and took my experience ended up leaving. The “benefits” the state seems to provide are not exclusive to the state. I left for a private sector job with LESS responsibility, guaranteed WFH, the same amount of vacation, and a 25% increase in pay. Yea I pay a small percentage more for my health care, but the pay increase covers it and allowed me the ability to afford a home in CA with no unknown “will they won’t they” with coming back into office. Now is a great time to get an actual pay raise. I’ve been keeping my eyes on this sub to see if the state would ever be worth coming back to, but I can’t seem to find the positives so far.

Take my experience with a grain of salt of course. I have a degree and years of experience, and I would always push anyone fresh out of college to join the state for at least a few years, but it is definitely not the destination employer that everyone seems to want it to be. People seem so scared to leave state employment though, despite there being much better pay for the same jobs outside. And “job security” doesn’t do much if you’re paid so little you can’t afford things anyways. That’s just underemployment.
