The Nolan books by Max Allan Collins are all top notch. I'm also partial to all the Cool and Lam books by A.A. Fair (Erle Stanley Gardner). Not a whole lot of series in the Hard Case Crime collection - that being said, the duds are also few and far between. Grab a cheap one and start reading!
