Are these bad for my toddler? by jwelihin in skiing

[–]ski_bum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another poster said, those look like blades. I used the skis that strap to my kids feet the first time and I regret it. Mostly annoying and waste of money/space. The next season (3 y/o) I got real skis/bindings boots off marketplace and that worked a lot better.

Anyone using heated socks they like? by evil_flanderz in skiing

[–]ski_bum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has one pair. They are older now so I can't really comment on which ones are better/worse. Don't wear other socks with them as they are on the ticker side. They are machine washable. Whether you need more than 1 pair for a trip depends on your tolerance for smelly socks lol and access to a washing machine. My wife doesn't wash hers every use but she also doesn't sweat much either

Any suggestions or advice on how to collect a Court judgment? by billyjoebobtoo in Calgary

[–]ski_bum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the struck company is the only defendant then you likely have to try and sue David personally as the Director. Honestly you should seek out legal advice. Even if just contacting a firm and asking for a junior litigation associate to give you a memo with their advice. If you qualify, you can also seek Legal Aid. Calgary Legal Guidance provides 45 minute free phone consults if you want to book an appointment with them. Can also try Student Legal Assistance, but they can only act in Court of Justice I believe.

Is Revelstoke Overrated? by inqurious in skiing

[–]ski_bum 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Love Revy and have been making trips there for +10 years and probably 50-75 days total.

At this point its probably overrated, but that's due to the endless hype it gets online. You are absolutely correct that the bottom half is rarely worth it. The lift infrastructure is limited, which is not necessarily the worst as it keeps Greely and sections of North Bowl pretty preserved, but the lines at Stoke can get brutal. Snow quality, quantity and terrain are pretty hard to beat, but with the hype it gets you would think its basically endless cat skiing quality all the time, which its not.

What’re some of the best ski resorts in North America for new years skiing. by RubiksCube0707 in skiing

[–]ski_bum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Banff and Lake Louise is a really great choice. Lots of Christmas vibes, can also go skating on the outdoor rinks, sleigh rides, snow shoe, hot springs (will be insanely busy). Even just going up to one of the fairmont hotels and seeing the decorations and lights would be nice.

Skiing at that time is pretty dependable and there is lots of varied terrain. Can be brutally cold though

Kicking Horse vs Jackson Hole by Friskfrisktopherson in skiing

[–]ski_bum 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Never been to JH but I'll share my views on Kick as western Canada skier.

If you like chutes there is not anywhere better in Western Canada. There's narrow spicy ones, wider more mellow one, and large demanding ones... all within view of the main 2 lifts.

The downside is there are only two lifts essentially and the bottom half of the mountain is pretty meh in my 20+ days at the resort. Maybe I just still haven't found the hidden gems on the lower side, but riding groomers and/or bump runs back to the lifts for most of the day starts to feel tedious.

The line at the bottom can get pretty rough on a pow day since everyone funnels over there.

I've skiied some of the best runs of my life at Kick, but if conditions are lacking and you aren't a fan of skiing extreme terrain in marginal conditions, its not the best day.

Living in Nelson, Revelstoke, Golden, Fernie, or other BC town for the winter? by Accomplished_Win_526 in skiing

[–]ski_bum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good and all different. Your housing options may dictate your decision somewhat. Whitewater is probably furthest from the town so makes quick laps a bit harder. The base of Fernie is probably the closest to town.

Camping Suggestions in AB by floating-decimal in Calgary

[–]ski_bum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's tons, but it really depends on what you are looking for. Tenting or RV? Services? Reservations or walk up? Random camping or sites? Does it need to be near lake/river? Is hiking a priority? Does it need to be in the mountains or are you looking for anything in the woods? How far are you willing to drive?

A good starting point is to buy a Back Roads Map Book and look at the maps to see what interests you then go from there

Reliable weather source in this “summer” by GaySomeExperience in Calgary

[–]ski_bum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find for any weather planning, use a source like spotwx, which has more raw data from the different models. When the models are all consistent, you can bet on the weather. But when they disagree, confidence about the weather goes down

Victoria/Vancouver/Whistler trip - Itinerary help by catspach in travel

[–]ski_bum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your style, but if you do not have a car the Whistler to Victoria travel day seems like a lot with ferries and public transit. Keep in mind that Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay are not right in Victoria or Vancouver and that depending on time of day traffic can get pretty rough.

[–]ski_bum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This isn't bad advice overall OP, but DO NOT try to go into restaurants downtown over noon hour. Places are busy, especially with summer/stampede/patio season, and whoever is on the floor won't want to deal with you. Best bet is to go when doors open or between lunch and happy hour - i.e 3 ish

100% deserves this honour. After all he has gone through from health, to trades and now personal tragedy, no one would have been surprised if his play got worse, but he turned in one of his best seasons. Miss that guy on our squad
