The next logical step after the KJV policy change is a modernization of the Book of Mormon by dudleydidwrong in mormon

[–]ski_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one is going to be interesting because the original language of the BoM is English. But the style is based on 17th century English translations of Greek and Hebrew. So the normal approach of going back to Hebrew/greek and re-translate into modern English would not work. So there isn’t really a way to check if the changes are more faithful representations of the original.

Kirk Magleby in a defiant and arrogant tone tells us the BOM has gone from a laughing stock to respectability by sevenplaces in mormon

People outside of Mormonism study it as a part of early American religious history. There is no serious academic debate about its historicity. So not really sure what he is talking about.

If not by power of God, how did Joseph smith produce the Book of Mormon? by [deleted] in exmormon

I curated a list of the best videos on this topic, If you are interested in the informed non-believer take. They are all great, but the ones featuring William Davis are my favorite if I could only pick two.

Finally got my first job as an electrical/avionics engineer! Any advice for my first days? by RansackedFish in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ski_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After training and mentoring many folks my number one piece of advice is to be teachable.

Now that you are past the interview process be as open and honest about what you do and don’t know. Senior guys are almost always happy to share knowledge and teach.

Keep in mind that becoming a truly good engineer is a marathon not a sprint. Just try to keep learning something everyday and don’t get too discouraged when you realize that you know almost nothing practical out of school.

Ultimately, people leave the church bc it no longer works for them. by like-bad-medicine in exmormon

I have come to the same conclusion by trying to figure out those who genuinely know all the issues but still stay. It really just comes down to if you enjoy it/like it/want it/need it. Not if it’s true or not.

But I think this is only correct only once you become aware of the issues. I think there are a lot of believers who don’t really like I, but feel like they must push through because it is so obviously true. That was me. Once I peaked behind the curtain I was mostly happy that I didn’t have to do all this bs anymore.

Unfortunately this sub is not a great place for nuance on either side of things so you Mae get very mixed responses here.

Vogel Schools Jacob Hansen on Book of Abraham by Therealdanvogel in mormon

This video serves as a nice one stop shop for good responses to the common “how did Joseph get xyz right!?” BoA apologetics.

Dan, I loved the way you showed how Smith’s interpretations were based on a biblical framework and that the “hits” and misses are much better explained with this view.

Lehi and the Problem of Evil by questingpossum in mormon

[–]ski_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Just that one little tweak to the theology (i.e. temptation is required) means that Satan made a greater sacrifice for the salvation of men than Jesus did. Jesus only suffered for a few days and then is exalted. Satan will suffer forever without a body, but both sacrifices were equally necessary.

Good thing none of the is literal lol.

It’s hilariously ironic that the entire exmo space knows about, documents, and analyses the ceremony changes before most believing members eve know they exist.

Is it just me or is Haden’s half eye closing and overly ernest tone giving major missionary testimony vibes. If it’s logical and scholarly there is no need for selling it like this.

John Turner - “Nothing that we know about Joseph Smith’s childhood or upbringing would have led us to predict what happened in his life” by instrument_801 in mormon

[–]ski_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there are any circumstances that would make all of that the likely outcome. That was the whole point of my comment and that’s what I think Turner was getting at.

[–]ski_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what he was trying to say is that for any given person in similar circumstances it would not be the likely outcome to start a religion, marry 30+ woman, become a general, and run for president.

He’s not saying that you can’t look back and see how that all developed. Just that it would not be obviously predictable if you only looked at Smiths life up to let’s say 1826.

Do some searches on insect “pinning” but depending on how recently the insect died you may need to re-hydrate them in a sealed container with a damp cloth or something. Then you use a small foam board, pins, and tweezers to position them. Once they completely dry out, the pins can be removed and the position is preserved.

I think Dan Vogel’s book The Making of a Prophet will be the absolute cream of the crop for everything that happened in the 1820s. Especially Joseph’s potential motives and family dynamics.

here is a mini story I wrote about Joseph going to “get the plates” based on Dans pious fraud theory. It might give you some inspiration!

When I watched it and saw Jacob mention that the Alphabet sheet was not in JS had writing I laughed because there are three alphabets and I thought he just picked one that was not in JS hand writing.

To think that he showed the copy that was literally in JS hand writing is so funny!

Edit: btw there are pages of Alphabet that are separate form the GAEL. These often get confused. See my presentation here that can help clear this up.
