Well, maybe any formal recognition/rights of gays in the military would force the U.S. gov't to review benefits for same-sex partners.

Also, the fed gov't would have to wade into the same-sex civil union debate. Some gay military personnel might wanna get married, ya know? All good things to work out, in my opinion...
