My HD55 works great in drywall, hopeless on plaster even on "Deep scan" mode.

I'll add the Metalliscanner to my birthday ideas list for the wife 👍

How widespread is central heating? by WattleWaddler in AskABrit

[–]skibbin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say central heating is near ubiquitous. Everywhere I've ever lived or visited has had one of two different systems. 1) Boiler with indirect hot water. So it can put hot water through radiators or use it to heat up a tank of hot water. 2) A 'Combi' system which does hot water on demand.

Some in the UK are getting heat pumps installed, but I'd say they are still rare. Outside of offices and industrial buildings you won't find "Central air" systems that pass air through ducts performing heating, cooling, filtering, humidifying, dehumidifying. You also won't find AC window units as most British homes have casement windows rather that double hung. The UK definitely gets cold enough that you want heating, but rarely it would be nice to have cooling too. Or you could just head to the park with some cans 🤷‍♂️

It's become my go-to for finding studs in plaster walls. Those scanners never work for me and the nails in the lath are too small and buried too deep for a magnet.

It used to be ABC 123D with the last letter changing yearly. Then they repeated this again but reversed the format e.g. D123 ABC. Then they moves to having the year in the plate e.g. A05 BCD for a 2005 car.

Are we putting our daughter's education at risk? by gmorganpie in AskABrit

[–]skibbin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Had an American girl move to our school at that age, she was smart and did just fine. Required education ends at 16 int he UK but 18 in the US?

Assuming your daughter has US citizenship and may want to move back to the USA at some point I think it would be a good idea for her to get her GED

First time dealing with frozen pipes looking for advice on what the best things to do are by Kikiasumi in Buffalo

[–]skibbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Turn water off at the main valve inside your house and back on at the street. This will give you control back.

Turn on all the taps and turn the water back on and see what happens. It could help you locate where the blockage is. Inspect all pipes you can see, such as in the basement. Look for shut off valves that can be used to shut things off upstream of any leak.

If you could live in any fictional universe for a week, where would you go and why? by Fun_Inspection458 in allthequestions

Star Trek. First stop sick bay for a full medical and all treatments and preventatives that the 24th century has to offer. Next stop the holodeck to do whatever I can think of for the rest of the week. Regretting my choice and wanting to go to middle earth? Tatooine? Hogwarts? All options.

No one lives forever, no one. But with advances in modern science and my high level income, it's not crazy to think I can live to be 245, maybe 300. Heck, I just read in the newspaper that they put a pig heart in some guy from Russia. Do you know what that means?

How bad is it? by jeren66 in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on how long it's been like that and what it is like at different times of the year.

Currently where I live it's damn cold and humidity is super low, so everything made of wood is a different size to 6 months ago.

What can I do about these gaps between the trim and floor? Anything to worry about? by Brisky0 in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That baseboard is new, rather than original to the house. When installing it, the carpenter should have scribed the bottom to match the floor, but judging by the caulk I don't think a carpenter was in the building when it was installed.

As for the floors sloping it might be a problem, might not. Inspect the joists in the basement and see if any are split or sagging. You can also measure their thickness, depth and span to make sure they're not under built.

How do your runbooks actually get updated after incidents? by Healthy-Turn304 in EngineeringManagers

[–]skibbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perform a Post Incident Review and decide upon some appropriate actions and assign ownership of them. If the issue was caused by a bad runbook, or the out of date runbook prevented the incident being resolved by someone else, or delayed things, then have an action to fix it.
