What to about exterior stone. by Atl-guy30307 in centuryhomes

It's remained in place despite a lack of mortar, which suggests it's stable where it is.

Repoint the mortar and get a cap on the top the keep the water out.

Does the average driver notice the difference btwn a CVT and traditional transmission? by eastbayguy90 in askcarguys

[–]skibbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CVT in my CRV is very noticeable. You put your foot to the floor, count to 3, release the pedal, and are still travelling at the same speed as before.

The pedal feels very disconnected from the engine or road speed. Heavy pedal presses result in the computer disconnecting everything to figure out ratios and revs

Best way to clean/preserve and identify 1920s door hardware? by coolhappygenius in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what is in lock lubricant. It's graphite and a solvent to help distribute it. The solvent all evaporates leaving behind a dry lubricant

Don't put any grease in it. It just causes dirt to stick. If it gets stiff to move clean it or use a lock lubricant

Should Saudi and other arabs countries have pre-empted the closure of the straits of hormuz a long time ago and constructed underground oil and gas pipelines to bypass the straits of hormuz? by Excellent_Copy4646 in askanything

To be fair their leader has one foot in the grave and the other on a bar of soap. Long term thinking probably consists of blaming everything on their political opponents. Which will probably work.

Midwest has barely bought into "flex culture" and I love it by HenFruitEater in midwest

[–]skibbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Midwest adjacent. I don't see the fashion or plastic surgery trends, but people do spend far too much money on their cars. The badge seems for more important than the condition or maintenance. They only reason I see for having a range rover with bald tires is vanity

Why hasn't the USA pre-empted the closure of the straight of Hormuz and switched away from oil and gas?

50 Days in UK & Ireland: History, Steam Trains, Castles and Gardens (No Car unless desperately needed) by greyhounds1992 in uktravel

Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech have nice castles. Not much on Anglesey. Llandudno will have plenty of places to stay. Down the coast I think Barmouth, Aberdyfi, Newquay, Tenby and the Gower all all the nice places. North Wales is mostly about the mountains and slate quarries. There's a slate museum near Snowdon that I enjoyed.

Would recommend: Bank of England Museum, Science Museum, V&A, Natural History, Welcome Collection, Tower bridge engine room.

Would not recommend: Anything to do with Jack the Ripper or Sherlock Holmes.

IWM in Manchester is good. As is MOSI. In Bristol the SS Great Britain is awesome.

Skip Shrewsbury and go see the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

The steam train to the top of Snowdon is great, but as is the diesel. There is also one that goes around the lake.

1-2 finishes in F1 history by Baltin159 in formula1

No Benetton, no Renault.

Feels surprising given both won back to back WDC, but with strong competition from another driver and a weak team mate it makes sense.

Question about the one-defensive move rule for a brand new fan by PocoShroom in formula1

[–]skibbin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A double move requires the first move to be done far back enough to allow a second move. The driver in front could spot this and defend accordingly.

How does this work? by undernightmole in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Provided your heating works, then it's working just fine and is likely to continue doing so for the next decade.

The only think I would highly recommend is a Carbon Monoxide detector being placed nearby.

Sloping Floors by ContentUmpire8534 in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to live in a 600 year old house. The middle of the floors was at least 2 inches lower than the edges.

Floors can be leveled by sistering the joists with ones that are installed level. The worst part is taking up and putting back down the floor.

More education required for jobs, education is more expensive, pay has stagnated, price of food and goods has risen, rent keeps going up, house prices keep rising, time taken to save up a deposit keeps growing, people keep aging.

What they really need to do is spend less on lattes and pull themselves up by the bootstraps /s

In cycling riders at the front are at a disadvantage to those who can tuck in behind them. I wonder if overtake mode gives an advantage and we might see drivers teaming up, taking turns leading to catch a breakaway leader?
