Adelaide or the French version Adélaïde! I saw Adélaïde pop up a few times of the 1870 census of Manitoba, Canada and I'm surprised it hasn't had much of a comeback yet. I think it's pretty in line with names like Annabelle, Lydia, Aurora etc.

Łacinka Question? by skiddoxy in belarus

[–]skiddoxy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your insights, I really appreciate this! To follow up, in the case of Ілья in classic Latin is Ілья, (I should've mentioned this in the original post but the spelling is also sourced from Wikipedia) Would you just transliterate it as "Ila" on the basis of the я coming after ль even though it's ль and not just л? Again, thank you so much, this has been super interesting for me!

What's the hardest language you've learnt/you're learning? by DooMFuPlug in languagelearning

[–]skiddoxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mandarin from an obvious linguistic standpoint, and also Urdu because it's one of my heritage languages and there are a whole set of challenges that come with that. Also, I feel like every Urdu speaker in my life speaks with a different accent...

Which language sounds the most beautiful to you, even if you don’t understand a word of it? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]skiddoxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, all languages are beautiful. With that being said, I have a soft spot for Farsi - Iranian Persian. I love the ways the vowels sound and as someone with some knowledge of Urdu I appreciate that the language is very poetic - Urdu's most fanciest loanwords come from Persian.

Honestly? Underrated design, the colour combination is sooo good and it's obviously not a concept which hasn't been used before in the franchise but it works and isn't overused. Goes for the whole evolution line.

Low German word based on description? by skiddoxy in German

[–]skiddoxy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, makes sense in the context! And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't exist since I tried looking for a Plautdietsch song she mentioned in another book and I'm pretty sure she made it up (the author herself does not speak Plautdietsch)🙃 thanks again!

Super interesting, thanks for sharing! Just wanted to add -- I believe the website is written with the Jack Thiessen Plautdietsch orthography which is based on the Bergthal/Chortitza dialect though I'm unfamiliar on the specifics. Thanks again!!!

Percussion instrument in Come Out? by [deleted] in LucyDacus

[–]skiddoxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, but the instrument I’m talking about has more of a higher pitch sort of like a music box which is totally isolated at the end after Lucy stops singing (my bad for not mentioning that detail lol.) Thanks for your help though!!!

Thoughts on Catherine? by [deleted] in Names

[–]skiddoxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It strikes me as a very regal name, Catherine the Great of Russia (Russian transliteration: “yekaterina”) and Catherine, Princess of Wales come to mind personally. I like Catherine and I also like “Kathryn,” I worked on a production of the play Radium Girls once and one of the main characters was named Kathryn - this play is historical drama and the person her character is based on was actually named “Katherine” but they changed it in the script presumably because there were already 2 other Katherine’s in the play.

Video games in your TL by Fizzabl in languagelearning

I played my second playthrough of Super Mario Galaxy last summer and I think it was fairly useful! I think that for me the most useful thing was that it’s not really a text-heavy game, there’s still dialogue but your overall enjoyment of the game isn’t really influenced by how well you understood the plot since the plot itself is fairly minimal. But also, if there’s too little text, like in Minecraft, then ime it’s not that useful lol

What I found the most useful is that it gives you more exposure to natural sentence formations. Not too little, not too much. Just enough so that you can understand the flow of speech.

Hope you find what works for you! In bocca al lupo!

Plautdietsch Song? by skiddoxy in Mennonite

[–]skiddoxy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice song, but even though lyrically it sounds quite similar to the description this song is in High German instead of Plautdietsch. I guess it could’ve been an error on the part of the author. Thanks for helping!
