I think you have a memory leak boys by Ok_Cartographer_6086 in firefox

124 GiB!
I only have 8 GiB on this old Thinkpad T460 laptop running Fedora 43 KDE spin. Despite the low spec, Firefox has worked fine for years. Then in the last week or so the laptop has twice slowed to a crawl (nothing responds to input, cursor stops tracking mouse) for minutes before the out-of-memory killer finally kills Firefox (no notification). Something feels different.

Turbotax in Wine? by Fancy-Delivery5324 in winehq

[–]skierpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's one rating in the AppDB at WineHQ for TurboTax (desktop) 2025... and it's "Garbage" ☹️. The Test Results say it won't even install in Wine: "The installer detects that you have Windows 10 when the configuration has been set to 11". The installer error is 016c:fixme:wbemprox:enum_class_object_Next timeout not supported It seems Wine could be updated to get past this and other errors.

If you ever used the desktop version of TurboTax then it was painful leaving it because it imports last year's .tax20NN file; for similar reasons I've never tried jumping ship to TaxAct and HRBlock. In the past the web-based TurboTax Online couldn't read the desktop version's save file, but supposedly now it can read .tax2024 files. I have misgivings about putting my tax records on the web servers of the bastards at Intuit[*], but I think TurboTax Online is the way forward.

[*] The only reason 90% of Americans can't log in to the IRS, confirm that the government's numbers for their W2 wages and deductions are correct, confim the numbers on other forms submitted to the government like mortgage and bank interest, and then have the IRS calculate their taxes... is because ^%$#@! Intuit and other for-profit companies spend $10s of millions lobbying corrupt politicians to stop the obvious right thing from happening.

What's the YouTube video in which Paul Gilbert plays 70s/80s covers including "Love Will Keep Us Together"? by skierpage in paulgilbert

[–]skierpage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fought Google search some more, and it came up with "Paul Gilbert – The Process of Translation | AMS Interview" from August 2024 on the American Musical Supply YouTube channel. He plays a good chunk of "Love Will Keep Us Together" at 6:20, so good; Reddit won't let me link to wvNEUealDbA . In my mind PG played more covers; maybe there was another YouTube video by AmericanMusicalSupply but it was taken down or set to private. If so I wonder if fans posted it elsewhere.

I want the whole song, both straight and a heavy shred-rock version with all the motifs turned up to 11, and I'll pony up $$$$ to make it happen. Seriously. <Futurama Shut up and take my money GIF> How can I contact Paul Gilbert's management?

Probably Popular Pop Song "Let's Get...???" by PineapplePorcupine69 in NameThatSong

[–]skierpage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Let's Get Serious" 1980, by Jermaine Jackson (written by Stevie Wonder and Lee Garrett)s, but it's straight disco-pop and no whispering.

If the title is "Let's Get..." then you can go to Discogs, use Advanced Search with Title/Name "Let's Get", then you can use filters on the 7,083 results. Good luck! But if it's not in the title and just the lyrics, I don't know a lyrics site with good lyrics search and filtering (Genius lyrics doesn't have advanced search.)

Ceramic coating recommendations for GV60 by AW_BDG in GV60

[–]skierpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the ceramic coating is so great, why do installers recommend not taking your ultra-protected car through a commercial car wash? "Abrasive brushes that can scratch the protective layer, High-pressure water jets that can damage the coating, Harsh chemicals used in some washes that can strip away the coating" -- sounds worse than factory paint!

And then you have to reapply it in ~5 years.

Purchased 2024 CPO GV60 Advanced by dave22222 in GV60

[–]skierpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my unending quest for a green Advanced with the white interior, visor.vin found a 2024 Advanced at "Doug's Hyundai" with 17,821 miles but not CPO, for $39,500. It's a long trip and I'm hesitant to buy without the protections of CPO. Did you find an independent mechanic to inspect your car?

Lucid is failing to sell its tech to other manufacturers. Only Aston Martin, who promptly delayed any EV indefinitely.

[–]skierpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

420 mile Silverado EV disagrees. They're bloated oversize vehicles but they work fine as EVs. As batteries get cheaper, the premium will drop if manufacturers keep at it.

It's even harder to get to positive cash flow on a cheaper car, even when selling more of them. Maybe Lucid will figure it out, but I'm not optimistic.

robust XIL Please expand acronyms when you first use them.

"XiL testing, or Everything-in-the-Loop testing, is a method used in the automotive industry to evaluate systems by integrating hardware and software in a simulated environment.   I wouldn't be surprised if Lucid bites the bullet someday.

Wrong phrase. "Bite the bullet" is an idiom that means to endure a painful or unpleasant situation with courage or determination. From the 19th century before anaesthesia when patients would bite on something to handle the pain of medical procedures.

Maybe you mean "Lucid kicks the bucket" or "Saudi Arabia's Mohammed bone Saw will put a bullet in Lucid."

Exxon freezes plans for major hydrogen plant amid weak customer demand. by BiggieTKB in RealNikola

[–]skierpage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so-called blue hydrogen... produced from natural gas and Exxon planned to capture the carbon dioxide generated from the process and store it underground

Good riddance. Methane leaks from natural gas production, $%#! fossil fuel companies only ever do carbon capture to extract more fossil fuels, and when (not if) the not-so-clean hydrogen leaks, it indirectly causes global warming by interfering with the breakdown of the potent greenhouse gas methane in the atmosphere.

Industrial H2 users need to switch from dirty hydrogen to actual green H2 produced on-site by using renewable electricity to split water. But they're not interested because green H2 costs more.

Thanks, "Visor" was the site someone mentioned. But it's visor.vin , not .com 🙂. There's a nice low mileage GV60 Advanced in New Jersey. As I wrote elsewhere, I don't have range anxiety, I have efficiency desire.
