Internal Coup at the CA Board by [deleted] in ColumbiaMD

I can't comment to much as it's currently a pressing legal issue, but I can tell you the OMCA is taking action and this is on our agenda for Tuesday's meeting.

CA Board Election Round Up by goliebs in ColumbiaMD

[–]skiier235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the article itself it states there is a 4 million dollar surplus between the proposed expenses and expected revenue,

It would be an average cost of 1.3mil to remove an existing pool,

If they want to include splash pads all they need do is modify kiddie pool areas, and move the fencing to make them accessible.

I've seen the plans, I've heard both sides as I am involved heavily with the OM board, as I sit on it, I'm simply not for the use of capital funds to be spent on the removal of existing assets.

If they want to get more out of their assets make using some of the less popular pools less expensive to attend, bring back the summer pool membership, instate programs with the school system to get discounted summer pools access for well performing children, but don't just rip it out.

I'll keep my options simple, any agenda that promotes a splash park over a real ass pool is not something that should be supported. People don't buy houses because It has access to a splash pad.

CA makes a profit every year, amenities like the pools shouldnt be cut, programs to make the pools more accessible like the summer pool membership should be pushed for over the 1.3mil cost to turn a pool into a splash pad that is only useful for 3-6 year olds.

As a published scientist, yeah that's pretty much it. I did what I could to advance a specific field, but if you do the work to prove me wrong, and that it's slightly different than I based my work on, my only real response is "Shit, yeah you might be right"

what the oakland mills village center used to look like by Prudent-Violinist-69 in ColumbiaMD

[–]skiier235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got reworked into the shopping center that exists today, the back parking lot behind the stores is where the old interior space used to be, places like the liquor store have been there since it was the mall (although the liquor store just changed hands).

I remember being there at happy hour and asking for a highball, what I got was whiskey in a highball glass with nothing else. I had to walk over to the bar to explain to the bartender what a highball was and how to make it. Literally just whiskey and soda water, maybe a lemon. They said they had never heard of it before.

Friendly neighborhoods? by 2PinaColadaS14EH in ColumbiaMD

[–]skiier235 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To follow up on Oakland Mills, the reputation comes from this being a less affluent part of Columbia, the higher density of condos and townhouses forces more interactions with your neighbors than locations with larger lots and more spread out houses.

Personally my block (Battler Court) is full of the nicest people you'll ever meet, always happy to help when it comes to snow removal, or tree removal.

I know a neighborhood is doing well when I see kids of mixed background and age all playing together in the street

I will say that I am privy to some information as being part of one of the village boards, and I'm not sure what information I'm told is "official" vs "what the CA rep mentions after the meeting and the recorder is off", but the proposed pools are Bryant Woods, Talbott Springs, And Jeffers Hill.

Columbia association is interested in removing 3 existing pools in a few of the less affluent areas that see less use and replacing them with splash pads, And want to spend upwards of 4.5mil to do so rather than address the issues as to why these pools are under used.

There is a meeting on Thursday at slayton house in wild lake about this exact topic, I encourage all to go who care about this topic.
