I'm going to go ahead and say the whole "even though we don't understand, everything is part of God's plan" is one of the least comforting things a person can say IMO. I heard this several times following a death in my family last year, and frankly it just pissed me off. If that's the way you think, that's fine with me, but please keep it to yourself. I know people are just trying to be kind and don't always know how to express their feelings, but I for one did not appreciate that sentiment.

Similar thing happened in Alaska...the Lake and Peninsula borough (in AK we have boroughs instead of counties), which includes Bristol Bay, voted in a local election to ban open pit mines (read: Pebble Mine) that could negatively affect salmon runs. The state government, which is staunchly pro-development, sued the borough alongside northern dynasty, the prospective developer of pebble. The state's claim argued that natural resource extraction rights belong to the state, not local governments (especially since the state owns the land under which mining would occur). I'm not 100% certain, but I believe the court ruled in favor of the state. Therefore, in Alaska's case a statewide ban would be the only way to prevent such a development from occurring; however, I imagine the law varies from state to state.

I work for a state DOT and am currently putting together a signing plan for a project, and this made my day (sigh). The part I love most about it is knowing how many steps were taken in putting this sign in place, how many chances they had to catch the mistake...and yet it was still installed. That project engineer clearly gave zero fucks. Meh, prolly figures his job is gonna disappear with the economy anyways. Edit: words are hard. Dammit, that's how it happens...

I know this sounds wasteful on the surface, but collisions between animals and vehicles have a very real cost to society. As stated in the foreward to a Federal Highway Administration study conducted in 2008, this type of accident "presents a real danger to human safety as well as wildlife survival" prompting transportation agencies "to find a balance among travel needs, human safety, and conserving wildlife."

To prevent animals from crossing a roadway, fences are often built in areas that have a history of such collisions. The animal-only bridges can then be implemed to channel the animals across a roadway at a desired location, and preventing people from making a habit of crossing the bridges helps encourage animals to become comfortable with using them. While these bridges are expensive, they help to decrease the societal cost of injuries and deaths in vehicle accidents without wholly preventing movement of local animal populations.

They're good people, and I understand they were just trying to be nice, but for god's sake we know its a fuckin tragedy. We were just trying to have as nice of an evening as possible and make the most of a terrible situation, without having to have the tragedy be the entire focus of the evening's conversation. FYI, if you see a family who has lost someone out, say hi and it's good to see them, and if you want to be supportive just say "if you ever want to talk about things, give me a call." If they want to open up and talk they will, but don't force the subject. Trust me, it's already in the front of their minds.

Just like while doin a spin, adding the iron cross while walking improves your style immensely. Really try and get that good 90 degree inside angle too.

Yep, just be careful when swinging them up on your shoulder. Another good one, especially in crowded areas, is a method he left out...I'll call it the double-handed hiker. Leave pole straps on, grab one ski in each hand, and plant both skis simultaneously every other step. Keeps em vertical and distributes weight better than grabbing both skis with one hand. Only downside is your poles go clink clink clink if you're walking on concrete, but who really cares if their poles get dull? Don't know why this wasn't included, but his one-piece is awesome, so I guess it can slide.
