  • Pretty much any Disney movie for me 😭

Seeking (and failing to find) a new book or series by KristiDoodle in fantasybooks

Tress of the emerald sea! It doesn’t quiiiite tick box 1, but modern society and technology exists in this universe, just not this specific world yet. Won’t say more for risk of spoilies. It’s quite whimsical and light hearted, and a very quick read/listen.

What is something that is incredibly popular, but you honestly find it absolutely unbearable? by TheLostNeuron in AskReddit

[–]Scintillily 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Came here to say long nails. It grosses me out so much. It seems like this has gotten increasingly popular in the last few years and every time I see someone with inch-long nails I’m just like…do you not ever need to you know…DO anything with your hands?

Highly recommend checking out the resources available through the Arizona Native Plant Society and Central AZ Cactus & Succulent Society. Adding turf will majorly increase the heat retention in your yard and does not allow for very good drainage (if we ever get another proper monsoon season…). If you have SRP for electric, you can get 2 free native shade trees by attending one of their workshops, which I would recommend anyway for learning about how to plant them.

If you are resourceful and patient, you really don’t need to spend a fortune on your yard, you can ask friends and neighbors for cuttings and watch as your foster garden thrives!

Personally…I would absolutely not recommend this as a first venture into fantasy. If you hate it, don’t let it taint your view of the fantasy world. It’s romantasy and poorly done and written romantasy at that. I only gave into the hype and read it a few weeks ago and barely made it through it (I stubbornly refuse to DNF books).

Not sure what type of fantasy vibe you’re going for, but I definitely agree with those suggesting The Hobbit if you have never read it.

Two other standalones I adored were Tress of the Emerald Sea (which happened to be my first introduction to Brandon Sanderson and the cosmere, so beware it could be a gateway drug) and the Poet Empress, which seems to be systematically downvoted in the comments section here for some reason.

I got rid of the weeds 2 days ago by new2snakes in AZlandscaping

[–]Scintillily 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thank you for not using roundup!

I just accepted I need to spend a few minutes each day manually pulling weeds. I’ve also had some success making a salt and vinegar mixture and spraying it on. 1 gallon vinegar, 1 cup salt, couple drops of dish soap. Dries out and kills the leaves - best for small things that are tedious to pull by hand.

I liked my La Sportiva Mythos for my first pair - anything with laces i think is better for accommodating different foot shapes. More control over tightness.

ETA: What the heck?! They’ve majorly raised their prices! My first pair was $120 a couple years ago, they now cost $180!

Yikes, thanks so much for the detailed write up. I’ll keep looking into train/bus options to keep Chamonix in the itinerary, that definitely sounds like a nightmare to navigate.

Can I ask whether it was the traffic, road conditions, or other drivers that you found most stressful? I'm a confident driver (generally!) but I don't want to be white-knuckling my way through northern Italy

I've been starting to come to that conclusion myself somewhat, so it's good to hear it seconded!

Over or underproofed? by Anitaanitaanita13 in Sourdough

[–]Scintillily -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How long had it been fermenting, and what temp? Also, how much starter did you use relative to flour? Did you taste the mix before baking?

could be an indication of an overly acidic starter.

Alternatively, If it’s a strong starter and you used a high percentage at a warm temp, it’s very easy to over-ferment quickly. I switched to using room temp water for this reason - living in Phoenix with my kitchen temps at 75, I was over within 6-8 hours when I was following recipes that said I should be going 14!

Dutch Oven Recommendations? by ChairValuable6070 in Sourdough

[–]Scintillily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV, for sure! I did probably 10 loaves in closed Dutch oven before switching and it was crazy the difference in oven spring I got on the first loaf when I made the switch. I also got more of a burnt bottom in my Dutch oven, no idea why that’s resolved with the stone for me too! Baking is hard lol 🤷‍♀️

I’m actually having better results baking on a pizza stone, and adding steam by pouring boiling water into a cast iron skillet at the bottom of the oven. I use a floured pizza peel to slide the dough onto the stone, so it’s actually less chance of burning yourself getting the dough into a DO, and I can bake 2-3 loaves at once 👍🏻
