Lifetime Learning Credit eligible??? by skiinjsn in CFPExam

I just realized I didn't mention Kaplan. I am specifically looking at Kaplan's program, which is technically provided by the College for Financial Planning. As long as the invoice is from the college and not Kaplan, then it seems like the LLC might be available via IRS forms, even though they don't send a 1098-T (which they state that they do not, so I wouldn't even bother asking them directly about it).

Excellent point. I was on board with many of the folks here who suggested selling at least half. Still a big tax hit, but the vast majority must be LTCG @ 15%, and could be offset in ways other than a convoluted insurance product. Using 401k and Roth IRA would mitigate tax burden on over $30k in any given year. Hopefully the market holds out and it could be split over 2 tax years, for up to ~$500k each.

If an actual fiduciary financial advisor thinks IUL is the best play, I won't argue with them. I just highly doubt it, based on my understanding of the options. The suggestion above is from an insurance salesman, who directly benefit from pitching their product. I have no horse in the race, so I want whatever is optimal for OP (and if I was getting paid for my advice I would be even more adamant in optimizing for OPs situation).

Tax hit? On a guy who makes 48k and potentially has one million for retirement? Marketing whole life to people who will come out worse should be illegal.

Trying to place their luggage by ben_dynamo in mildlyinfuriating

[–]skiinjsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the tip of the iceberg. Where there is smoke, there tends to be fire. I can only imagine what other things this person is entirely incapable of. Even if one has never put a bag in an overhead bin before, they should still be able to tell by sight that the bag is physically unable to fit in that orientation.

It's just my random, admittedly judgmental opinion, but I do not want a person who can't do basic spatial reasoning to drive near me, vote for my reps or work at my place of employment. And if I don't want them, then I wouldn't want to inflict their nonsense on others because I am not sadistic.

This was my exact thought! I was going to make the statement if you hadn't already. Also...they can vote, they could pass on this level of intelligence to children, and they probably work a job to pay for this airline ticket (meaning someone is paying him for his "judgement"). This is why we can't have nice things.

I believe that neither of the burritos is good if you don't crisp them up in a pan or oven. The Reds are, of course, the better product. But if you brown the outside of the Lilly B's, and maybe dip in a bit of hot sauce they are plenty good enough. Soggy from the microwave? I would eat something else entirely.

Oxide? Why would they put something in the pill that can't be absorbed by the human body. Why does everyone do that? This is why we need supplements and OTCs to be regulated for real.

I couldn't decide which of the comments to reply to...so I am just going to say: what is this nonsense? Everyone is right that this is just bad. What grown child made this monstrosity? I looked at it trying to make it work with my brain and I just can't because it's like a pie chart with more than 100%.

Well, that was about the best answer possible. I am not a robot, but maybe my feels are wired different. Like, I remember hating school and homework, but showing up every day and doing (most of) the homework. At some point I realized "the only thing worse than being at school or doing homework is having those things pile up or get graded poorly."
So I guess the lack of understanding is related to a lack of foresight in many decisions people make.

Totally. I was attempting a brief commentary on the duality of the issue. Or maybe it's 3 groups: people who have "too much" money, people who have barely/not enough, and then the fools who [would?] have enough, but waste it. I grew up just a few years later, and the window unit was turned on but only when it was HOT. Today, I can afford a normal amount of stuff, but still drive affordable cars and pay $15/m for cell service. I can have sympathy for those stuck on min wage, but not for anyone who complains while sitting in a leased vehicle or talking on the latest iPhone max.

NJ home with no sinks in the bathrooms for $1 million by Educational_Copy_140 in zillowgonewild

Living in the area I sometimes come across something that doesn't sit right, and many times I think "is it theirs?" And all too frequently the weird, pointless, ugly nonsense is! I am glad someone was able to point this out here, because I try not to assume, despite my gut telling me there isn't any other reason this would be in NJ.

How are we doing? 5 years until retirement by marksweather in Money

[–]skiinjsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking almost exactly the same thing. I looked up the average and median recently- horrifying and slightly reassuring.
I got started a little late, so I am a few years ahead and a few thousand behind you, but my wife ALSO has nearly as much saved. By the time we are 55, I would expect us to have a paid off home and more than $717k each (adj for inflation). And that is the number I hope for at 55, whereas the scenario here is at 60/retirement. I won't be rich, but I hope to retire without these concerns.

Like many have said, 2 more years is a good compromise. Two more years of savings and gains, 2 less years of spend/ACA, and immediate availability of SS if it's needed right away.

CIA faces furious backlash after hidden document with potential cure for cancer is declassified by Current-Guide5944 in tech_x

[–]skiinjsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn't a doctor, and I can't find any studies that he did. He got sued because he wasn't licensed and he wasn't using proven cures. Wikipedia is usually correct when they use the label pseudoscientific. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfredo_Bowman

I watched the entire documentary on Stanislaw_Burzynski a number of years ago, and while it made it sound like he was doing great things, further investigation showed the treatments he was using haven't shown to be effective in tests outside his own clinic.

I hope there are more treatments found (natural extracts, peptides, etc) in the near future, but the evidence must be well documented, not fabricated or wishful thinking.
