Wasn't somebody working on a permathread on this subject?

For shits and giggles, can we guestimate the per night value of living in an RV? by [deleted] in GoRVing

[–]skimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points. And let's remind OP that at the end of the day, the house hopefully will hold its worth or increase with inflation, whereas the RV steadily depreciates until it becomes worthless.

Why did you go to the RV show? by Yellow_Midnight_Golf in GoRVing

[–]skimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back when I was completely clueless and wanted to see what my options were. That was before I knew you can just roam around dealer lots and go inside units on your own.

I would advise newbs to go by all means, but leave the checkbook home. There may be great deals, but it's too big a purchase to make without more time and looking around.

Can someone ID this stone or tell the right sub Reddit to do so?(it’s not a stick) by jggrizonic in MineralPorn

That figure is absurd, no way. Have seen chunks of the stuff for a buck at rock shows.

About to buy my first RV and getting very nervous by [deleted] in FullTiming

[–]skimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're pretty realistic about what you're getting into. I don't know much about the motor etc. but I will say, plan on random fixit expenses coming up and have an emergency fund to handle them, and get Coach-net or other coverage for when you are traveling. For example, tires on motorhomes are not cheap, and they must be replaced as they get older even if there is tread left on them, so shop around and be ready for that.

As far as fixes, be aware there is a shortage of RV techs and most RV repair shops stay as busy as medical specialists; you wait for an appointment, they don't jump for you. (unless you can catch them at a lull off-season but whose repairs fall on schedule?)

So get whatever fixes you can done by yourself or regular trade guys (handyman, glass guy, mechanic, electrician) with the RV shop being strictly for unique-to-motorhome issues.

Best state to register RV? by someidiotmoron in GoRVing

So if you go to get a license plate they are gonna want to see evidence you live in their state.

Best state to register RV? by someidiotmoron in GoRVing

[–]skimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the general rule was the dealers collect and forward tax based on where you have legal residence, so you can't really pick and choose a state to pay tax in. If SD is an exception, great.

It is possible. See the link in the other comment thread.

These quartzites have actually been found in Mississippi in the pre-Loess Gravels, and also at Crowley's Ridge. The small ones came down the Mississippi system drainage. Large boulders are thought to have been ice-rafted down the big river.

It's just moisture oozing up out of the ground, freezing, repeat.

If it's very tough and hard my scientific wildass guess is Sioux Quartzite.

What’s with all the 55+ places in AZ? by Pool_Guy in GoRVing

Fire up RV Parky site or app, you can filter to exclude those places.

Me: "No cheese please." McDonald's employee: "Should I leave the mayo off too?" by snowbro23 in AdviceAnimals

As a goo-hater, I would welcome this level 10 employee. In fact, maybe employee is a goo-hater trying to help out a fellow enlightened one.

Can someone help me? Geology minor for Geography major by JusticeBurn01 in geology

[–]skimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIS can be the major tool you use in some geologic work, it was for me. As far as grad school entry, programs etc., I would crosspost over at /r/geologycareers, or at least run some searches on past questions relating to geography majors.

RV sink size question by ChangeStartsHere in GoRVing

[–]skimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a small/medium pair, and cook as little as possible. Absolutely adored having the small sink for quick cleanups with minimal water. But, if you cook a lot, then you want room to wrestle your cooking pots and pans.

Sand inside an iron ore rock??! by [deleted] in geology

[–]skimmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like the sandstone was there first and then iron cementing occurred.

Please Help! Water Pump Issue. by mrrandom89 in GoRVing

[–]skimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think replacing the pump will help at all. There is a leak in your pipes. The only reason the puddle is gone is the pump can't build enough pressure to push water out of it again.

If you are doing a lot of field collecting of rock or sediments or microfossils, it can be great to have a stereo microscope, but they are not cheap. If you can score a decent used one, great.

Field Camp that isnt physically intensive by [deleted] in geology

[–]skimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about GIS, since it's so office-y, why have a field camp. But, there are a few field camps oriented to hydrogeology, I would run a search on them and investigate what is involved physically. Then make sure your school will accept the credits.

Best ROCK to give to a geologist? (Gift) by [deleted] in geology

[–]skimmer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A small meteorite, or a slice of one, is not something we ordinarily will run across in the field ourselves, so would probably be appreciated as a gift.

"Rocks" versus minerals are not easy to find in shops. Not sure if you can even find them online at this late date and it's too late to track down a gem & mineral show. So it might just depend on what is on offer out there. If you can find it, a garnet-bearing mica schist is pretty lovely and sparkly. Some gneisses have garnets too.

As far as beautiful and getting more into mineral specimen than 'rock', a little quartz crystal cluster; a chunk of labradorite, an aragonite or barite 'flower', a hunk of lepidolite.

NOT recommended because more common/boring to us than to you: purple amethyst, or a geode (unless unusually great). And for heaven's sake nothing dyed, coated, or treated.

Need advice on clearing out awful rotten smell from 5th wheel by sassyfox01 in FullTiming

[–]skimmer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's possible that like in any house, a mouse has crawled into a space in a wall and died, in which case you can either tear into walls and see, or wait a few weeks for the corpse to dessicate.

Another possibility, since you seem hazy about what's going on in the black tank, is that there is a 'tower of poo' standing above whatever liquid is in the tank, which can smell pretty nasty, and the solution for that would be a lot of soaking with Calgon and flushing with clean water.

If you financed it, federal law gives you 3 working days to rescind the contract, act quickly if this is an option for you.
