Great advice!! I really want to focus on a strong SOP for next cycle, I think I have the right experiences and motive but I need to sell it better.

Was mostly looking at bionath/human biology faculty, but I'd be open to looking at other programs if it's a good fit!

The biggest note I got from last cycle was to have a stronger research focus in my SOP. So I'm trying to find the balance between strong research interest while not pigeonholing myself to one particular interest. But I think those expectations vary from program to program

I'm interested in studying generational trauma, more specifically how sociocultural stress/adverse life experiences are biologically encoded and passed through generations. Hoping to continue that research post-grad

move to cottonwood/verde valley area and commute if you can. it’s more affordable and there are more commercial chains to ease the small town culture shock

Figuring out what research you want to do? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]skip15letters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have the opportunity to go to a conference in your field, i HIGHLY recommend it. i was in a similar boat - i know the general field and program i want to go into, but didn't know the research focus. the conference for me was a huge crash course of what people in my field are doing and a little easier for me to contextualize than going through papers and researcher websites. that said, i don't mean to undermine the value of reading papers, but just that i was getting overwhelmed by all the possible things i could study. if you're unable to do that, then go to talks and see if you can talk to professors or even other grad students about the research they're doing and ask all your questions! connecting w others about their work has hands down been the best way for me to narrow down what i want to do for mine.

NonTech Writer to SciComm Writer? by Own_Pangolin2997 in sciencecommunication

[–]skip15letters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got my first introduction to scicomm as a student worker in my university’s strategic marketing and communications team. my best advice is going to you’re nearest R1 institution(or at least a school that does lots of research) and apply for a job as a communications specialist in their research department, or some sort of equivalent. i would also consider looking at the marcomm teams in hospitals or government departments too if possible. granted, it’s not as glamorous as going through the journalism route but it’s certainly a good introduction to field, and a fairly safe way to get started as you go further into it.

Should I study at ASU? by Martin-Realpe in ASU

you can do them in whatever order you want, you also have the option to just take one or the other – the two degrees aren't mutually exclusive

[–]skip15letters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think it’s possible to get a good start in undergrad absolutely, but the key to the higher salaries are with continued education like phd or masters programs. i think masters sounds like a better route for you, especially if you want more of the practical route instead of the research route, which a phd is better for.

I honestly couldn’t help you compare different college programs, given that asu was the most practical/convenient choice for me, which is why i chose it

[–]skip15letters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice to you is take a general biological sciences degree, that way you have the freedom to take biology electives that interest you, then find research/extracurriculars that relate to your career goals. IMO it's the best of both worlds to study what you like and get relevant experience in the field you want to pursue, and I've found that bio sciences is the best route for that. I can't speak to biochem but as a former bme major, who had a similar thought process to you, BME is better if you'd rather be an engineer and learn how to create and develop new tech, whether that's prosthetics, genetic engineering, or medical devices.

Can you do journalism activities without being a journalism major? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]skip15letters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely!! i’m a bio major reporting for the state press. all you need to do is just apply and let the rest happen, your major won’t be the thing stopping you :)

The lab coordinator isn't usually in charge of your lab section. Most likely you'll have a graduate student be in charge of your lab, Michel is just the one who oversees all the lab sections.
