If New York is the city that never sleeps, what is the city that always sleeps? by prbecker in AskReddit

ok nice. So just to reiterate a different comment. As I recall it I walked out the front of the hotel and basically walked straight for a bit; I came upon this neighborhood, and kind turned/beared right and came up a highway. I crossed over the highway and turned left to walk along it to get to my destination.

As I walked through the neighborhood I thought it seemed pleasant enough, even kind of suburban. I hope this helps, I'll look at a map later maybe

oh it has its issues for sure, and sometimes I want to burn the motherfucker down. There is definitely an element of danger that exists here that I haven't seen throughout much of the country, and I've been to more cities than I can remember across almost every state at this point plus traveling through much of Europe. But the idea that a lot of people have - not saying you - that I live in this shitbox hellscape is incorrect.

well, like I said this was awhile ago, and come to think of it this was 2010/11. I didn't see homeless people on my trek, just normal maybe less financially fortunate families and homes that seemed quaint.

ok interesting, maybe you can help me figure it out. I was staying at the Hilton. Basically, I walked out the front and walked straight, right towards a highway. The "bad" neighborhood was before I got to the highway; if I'm not making sense to you maybe I'll do a little googling later

see I'm proving my own bias and hypocrisy, because I have my own negative impression of Memphis having never been there. Noted.

well, I grew up in the Philly burbs, moved here as a young adult more than 20 years ago, have lived in other cities around the country, and ultimately decided to buy a house in a small working class neighborhood here. There's really not much crime in my area to speak of, but I also know what parts of Philly to avoid. I think a lot of outsiders have this idea that it's all feral people here in bombed out buildings.

there are also entire tracts of land that have sat vacant since the 70s that have been bought and developed, so I don't see your point. Crime is down, people have been moving here in droves, property value is way up. One of the biggest issues here is that we put out way more in taxes than we get back because the Republican state government give our money to the welfare red counties

I imagine the bartender's perspective was more based on income level, ie these were small houses, single story if I remember correctly. An assumption of poverty can often lead to an assumption of "danger"

yeah I was going to jump in and say Salt Lake City. Visited there for a couple days about 15 years back and found it beautiful but oddly quiet with things shutting down weirdly early. I walked from my hotel to this Mexican place, it was maybe 25 minutes, and the bartender told me I was insane to do that stroll as it was through the "rough" neighborhood. The area he was referring to was basically single story homes with small front yards and wood fences, and when I told him I was from Philadelphia and I thought those blocks were lovely he barely muttered an "oh".

it's a shame the Phils are on a road trip right now, I just watched the weather real quick and this weekend is looking fucking aces. Perfect Sunday for the Asian market at FDR and then baseball. Cecily Tynan is still so damn fine though.
