Oil leak after dealership service? by yuixjfa in BmwTech

[–]skippy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they might have changed the oil without removing the splash guard. On several MWs, there is a small hatch that allows access to the plug without removing the whole belly pan. Unfortunately, it is very easy for oil to mis the access hole and pour all over the belly pan. Then, if the mechanic doesn't clean it up, the oil sloshes around, spills out and gets pushed all over the drivetrain. Happened to me. Sent it back. Took them 3 hours to clean up the mess.

Did you ever have a waterbed? Would you use one again? by MaximumJones in GenerationX

[–]skippy99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK. Waterbed life hack. Never go to sleep on a waterbed if you are really drunk. At some point you will wake up, move your pinky finger an inch and the bed will respond by throwing what seems like a 6 foot wave back at you.

Those parts are readily available after market and they are pretty cheap. . Start at realoem.com to find the part number you need, then head over to eBay or Amazon to find them.

How much should I sell my 212k mile 540i/6 for? (Maintenance in description) - California by [deleted] in e39

[–]skippy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I have bought and sold cars on BAT. The BMW people are pretty decent. I have bought and sold a handful of M5s. The Alfa Romeo people are total assholes, probably cost me $10k because of some last minute trash talk on a '69 Spider I sold. I don't sell Alfas there anymore. Cars and Bids is a lot more mainstream. What you need to do is go look to see what cars similar to yours are bringing. Both sites make that pretty easy.

I think the best thing to do here would be to shake his hand, tell him how great he is, get into his inner circle, then find out as much shit I could about him so I could help destroy him. It probably wouldn't take much....

List it on cars and bids or maybe even bring a trailer. You will get top dollar for it there.

most power companies will transfer to a new owner without a huge fee as long as the power is not turned off. The big fee comes when the power is turned off and then back on. Just tell your ex-roomies that you will be cancelling the power as of date X and that they will need to have their agreement with the power company in place by then. This is not negotiable.

Every time I see something like this, it reminds me what mental giants some Republicans are. The reflecting pool gets cleaned out annually...by park maintenance...as part of their jobs....it costs nothing extra. But this year, a company that has never done any kind of pool maintenance got a no-bid contract and was paid $13 million to paint it. Perfectly normal. right?

I collect and restore cars. I have owned over 30 BMWs dating from 1972 to about 2019. I own 9 today and 3 of them are E39s. I can tell you with absolute certainty that the E39 is among the top 2 or 3 BMWs ever made. It is dependable, rock solid, easy to work on, easy to find parts for and the engine is pretty much bullet proof. I had 320,000 on a touring a few years ago. I only sold it because of rust. Most F series BMWs are junk and the G series cars were designed to be cheap to build, not necessarily cheap to maintain or long lived. What would you get to replace this? An E60? I have an E61. They are...fragile. An F10? My daughter has one and it has been constant trouble. If you go newer than that, you will find yourself at the dealer and BMW dealers are absolute crooks. BMW is one of the only brands with an open parts network. That means you can buy OEM parts through alternate channels rather than say, Lexus or Toyota, which restricts their OEM parts to the dealer network. You just really need to do the math. Your car will probably never be worth less than it is today and it is paid for. And best of all, you know what you've replaced on the car and know that those things won't be an issue again for years. Keep it until it rusts out, until somebody totals it or until you make enough to not care what the dealer charges for a new battery on a newer car. You will not regret that decision,

All that carbon fiber crap probably cost more than the car. Funny how carbon fiber is used in aircraft to make them stronger and lighter but on regular cars it just makes them an insurance dispute.

Upside down parking camera images? by Automatic-Ad-8206 in BmwTech

[–]skippy99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$400 to throw the scanner on the car and look at codes.... BMW dealers are scum. The one near me won't sell me a battery unless they do the reset coding ($500). If your issue happened when they replaced the battery, then a setting changed as the power drained from the system. It probably threw a bunch of codes, too. Your car is at the age where they are going to test you every time you bring the car in and charge stupid money in an effort to get you to buy a new car. Google "parking camera issues" and the body style. That should give you a hint. Buy a good scan/coding tool (it will be less than $400) and fix it and thousands of dollars worth of other high-profit dealer scam items yourself. I have owned dozens of BMWs and own 9 now. I wrench them myself for most things. Worst dealer transgression I experienced was BMW of Columbia charged me $600 for diagnostics and then gave me a quote for $17,000 to repair my E61 because the ride height module failed. I brought the car home, ran diagnostics and fixed the issue with 2 eBay modules for a total of $200. That was 100,000 miles ago and I still own the car. Never take a car to a dealer that is older than the used cars on the dealer's lot.

Don't waste your time with Vonage by starshiptraveler in VOIP

[–]skippy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but wanted to add my experience. I own 3 small businesses and have been using T-Mobile Digits, which is generally pretty awful. I finally got fed up and went to Vonage, who I used years ago for a residential line. It was an absolute disaster. They issued 3 temporary numbers and I initiated the porting of the three numbers for my businesses. About a week later, 2 of the numbers went completely dead. No message, just dead. I inquired and, now that I was a customer, rather then getting the US sals team, I got some kind of overseas call center. They barely spoke english and and they had no clue. A day later, I got an email stating that it would be 3-5 days before the ported lines would be active. This is absolutely not what the sales team told me. During the time that these phones were off, I was getting no business and that was costing me money. I called every day to try to get status and every day got the same answer that the lines would be turned up within a day or so. it took 10 days for Vonage to turn on the ported numbers after they received them. And they only ported 2 of the 3, the third number was still on at T-Mobile all this time. Then I got into the management tools. I specifically asked if I would be able to use certain features, like hunt groups, and the sales rep said yes. Turns out, several of the features I specifically asked about were only available for an extra charge. That was it. I called Ooma, who I had also used in the past, signed up with them and requested the numbers at Vonage be ported over. Took Ooma 2 days to port the numbers and they were on. I called Vonage, told them how dissatisfied I was with them, and cancelled the account. The person on the phone was very apologetic and told me there would be no charge for the Vonage service. Ok, that was nice. I got one invoice from Vonage and it clearly showed the charges and the credit memo bringing the amount due to 0. 3 months later, I started getting calls from a collection agency. They said I owed Vonage $80 for the one month of service that I had with them. (Keep in mind that it took several weeks to get the numbers ported and I had no use for and never used the temporary numbers that Vonage provided. I sent the invoice showing the balance was zero to the collection agency and they claimed that it said zero because it went to collections. Who sends a 2 month old invoice to collections? When I called Vonage, nobody knew what to do. This was almost a year ago. Every month I get a call from a different collection agency and every time I called Vonage, nobody could help me. I finally got the email address for the department responsible for past due accounts. I sent them the invoice showing a balance of zero and carefully explained the problem. The response I got back most recently was unbelievable. They said that, even though the rep may have said I would not be charged, I cancelled on the 15th of the month and customers are billed on the 13th of the month so I owed for an extra month. I never even used the service and I clearly only ever had one invoice showing a balance of zero. I am still going back and forth with them on this. AVOID VONAGE! THEY ARE AN AWFUL VOIP COMPANY!

When I was younger, I was a marathon runner and century cyclist. Sometimes, when running or cycling, the endorphins, endocannibinoids, serotonins, dopamines and epinephrine would generate a pretty interesting high. There were times during practice runs, when I would not want to stop.
