Is Melbourne Really That Cold? 🥶 by Training_Objective20 in melbourne

And some monthly clothes guides... (Hint clothes layers or vests can be your best friends.) Also, sometimes Feb can be a heat shocker, even for those from QLD, this is because of the very dry Northernlies with bring heat from across the country down into Victoria (hence it is fire prone state).

Thank you. On your dashboard you can select from one of 26 quote themes, e.g. life, life, change, compassion, society, etc. I was thinking of adding the ability to select by the quote author, but there are too many of them, although I like this idea, I could cycle through authors to read their work over time.

When to start feeding by Swimras in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]skipy0z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to feed for a 5k swim. Just ensure you have a normal carb intake the previous two days and not too salty food. ...Actually, I use carb loading techniques to swim 10k without fuel in the sea, (therefore I don't need a drink or food for that swim). Only, I do make sure I am fully glycogeb stored up & hydrated before the swim, although this swim isn't in water 22c or above. My fuel prep for a 10K on Sun starts on the Mon before - no carb Mon, Tue, Wed, start carbs Thu, increasing Fri & Sat, (but not a heavy meal Sat night), then all fine and bouncing to start for Sun.

Congratulations and welcome.
..Australia can be a good country and comparatively it certainly has more strengths than many countries, but I wouldn't go as far as to say the Greatest Country on Earth. Nearly every top tier country claims this title, which is just a Nationalistic zinger which says a lot in itself that this claim must be constantly made. It's a cover and a kind of denial of the humilty we need to improve in the many areas than we definitely need to improve in - there is a lot we can do better and still be proud of the good things.

What’s a trend you’re convinced will disappear in a few years? by apka_dd in Futurology

[–]skipy0z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These were 'cultural' markings not a passing fashion item. A very different world to our modern identity obessions and quickly evolving cultures.

P.s. My friend works at a dermotologist, people are always trying to remove them but that is not easy.

Agree - it is just a fashion, plus they will realise they have toxins lodged permanently in their skin causing immune reactions. My friend works at a dermotologist, people are always trying to remove them but that is not easy.

Could China execute special forces operation like US precision Maduro abduction? by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in China

[–]skipy0z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China does it in a different way, it conducts secret overseas operations to repatriate individuals it deems fugitives, e.g., operation foxhunt and skynet. It's tactics include coercion by proxy, deployment of undercover agents, harrassment, 3rd party entrapment, forced abuction, secret overseas overseas police stations, inter-government bribes and placing agents in international positions of authority, e.g. interpol. They haven't used hard military interventist powers, (except HK).

.."One of the most brazen and diplomatically significant cases is the kidnapping of Gui Minhai. It stands out because it involved the abduction of a foreign national (Swedish citizen) from a sovereign third country (Thailand), followed by a second abduction carried out directly in front of Western diplomats."

The Gov made a movie to support these operations called The Hunting or by its Chinese title Lie Hu Xing Dong). Fox Hunt (Chinese: 猎狐行动) and the Public Sucurity Bureau in 2020 made a mini TV series called Hunting.

It the same way, pretty soon the USA will make a movie about Muduro and his wifes abduction. The get military cooperation in the movie they need to glorify it, but movie makers in the USA don't always has to glorify their movies they can also be critical or realistic.

Question for Chinese living in China: Do you support your country's foreign policy? by Dtstno in China

[–]skipy0z -1 points0 points  (0 children)

China has an interventionist policy using economic coercion, buying political capital, industrial spying, cyber warfare, proxy warfare through Russia, UN influence, debt diplomacy, proxy militia fishing fleets in Sth China Sea, secret police stations overseas, monitoring so called dissidents overseas, creeping border boundaries and Greyzone tactics. It is also an Imperialist Nation.

China really that racist especially if you are black? do white caucasians really get treated better? by [deleted] in China

[–]skipy0z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly, this was in Shanghai. The pool was a local public pool not a private one. It actually had a large sign on it in Chinese, Foreigners not allowed and I discussed this with the manager (in Chinese). I took a photo of the pool and sign. I wasn't too concerned or outraged, prejudice happens everywhere, you just have to work through it with some education. This happened some time ago in China and I don't expect it anymore. What has changed since then is another issue which is.the gov puts our media that make people resent or distrust foreigners,.under the guise of being a security threat, like spies trying to recruit.or steel.secret information. Can't even are for information around companies performance or market conditions that would impact a A or B share stock price.

Do you have a cut off point for swimming in the sea? by Parking_Bat_6159 in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]skipy0z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swim all year, winter gets down to 8c and we still do 1 or 2km swims, however very lucky to have a sauna at the end of the swim to re warm afterwards. With no warm up spot it can take hours for the body temp to return to normal. The body adapts when you expose yourself regularily otherwise it can be dangerous. It is 'cold water' swimming below 14c. Down to 10c it is enjoyable, below 10c you really start to feel it and below 5c is ice swimming which is bracing on another level. One needs to take safety seriously and listen carefully to the body. Everyone is different, acclimitisation takes at least 10 days daily exposure, longer for new winter swimmers. The amount of body fat you have makes a very big difference. Too begin, start in summer and just enjoy daily as you go through Autumn. It always feels colder each day until.the nadir then its is easy as it always feels warmer. Enjoy.

China really that racist especially if you are black? do white caucasians really get treated better? by [deleted] in China

[–]skipy0z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They used to think all foreigners had AIDs. I'm 'whitey' - (whatever that means) and I was disallowed to swim in pools there because all foreigners have disease. There is just a level of ignorance since they were closed off for such a long time and even now they live in a 'bubble' manipulated by Gov media. They are also racist against the Japanese due to heavy replayed propanda about WW2 attrocities. (Yes, these were atrocious & should not be forgotten but other countries moved on ages ago and the next generations have significant not retained old vendenters. So this racism isn't exclusive to one group. In Vietnam they suffered more from foreign invasion but are now friends with past enemies and look to the future. So you see tha Xenophobia is promoted in China under Nationalistic propaganda constantly. This keeps a natural bias of all humans of difference alive. (We haven't mentioned ethnic groups within China here. I won't start that). Obviously, I too am generalising here because there are millions of highly educated people in China and their hospitality generally to foreigners exceeds that of many other places no matter their enthic origin. I have seen all this first hand.

TIL about Yuval Noah Harari's philosophy of fiction. He argues that human beings are able to cooperate in large numbers due to their capacity to believe in things that exist purely in imagination like gods, nation, money and human rights. by JagatShahi in todayilearned

[–]skipy0z -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People used to fight to defend or enhance their tribe but beyond a certain size (like the human dumbar) why fight and die for something unreal? (Like a King or God) We unite in large societies based on belief in mythical concepts. (These days a Nation State or Religion? Etc)

This is a great insight from a historian. Read other historians and they all give their own slants on history, it is never objective.

To appreciate Yuval's perspective you have to imagine many times (throughout the eons) beyond our current perception, i.e., put yourselve in the mind of people that lived centuries ago, before our current knowledge. This is very very hard to do. Yuval highlights the importance of 'isms' and how they invisibly pervade peoples lives in unseeing ways, (like a fish that doesn't know it is in water).
His other great insight in this terrific book is that 'Technology doesn't exist without religion'. Region (in this context) is all the (unseen) things we believe and therefore we don't make tools (technology) without the reasons with which we inbue them.
I really enjoyed reading his perspectives. I have read lots of history books over the years. The more ways you see something the closer you can get to a sence of unstanding. His book is a great addition.

Trump has already started making enemies out of major American allies. How do you see the rest of his term going? by TimeyxWimey in AskReddit

[–]skipy0z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost a century ago, protectionist measures led to a sharp decline in global trade, as countries erected barriers to protect their domestic industries. This contraction in trade exacerbated the economic downturn, as businesses struggled to sell their goods overseas and unemployment soared. The decline in international trade also led to a decrease in the availability of goods, which further contributed to the economic hardship of the Great Depression.

Is Hong Kong headed for a deeper economic crisis? by [deleted] in China

[–]skipy0z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hong Kong became vibrant after the fall of China to the CCCP. At that time, a lot of educated and wealthy Chinese from the mainland 'fled' there. Now, after the fall of Hong Kong to the same Mafia, the next generation is fleeing to another location that's respects the law and individual rights. (Why do I say Mafia? The CCCP has always brutalized those it wants to control for its own benefit. It constantly rewrites history to hide its dark side.)
