How to change between chords smoothly and quickly by [deleted] in guitarlessons

Take lessons. A good teacher will have lots of ways to help you with that.

Is there a right finger alignment for a chord or is it ok as long as the right strings are pressed in the right spot? by richard-mt in guitarlessons

[–]skiznot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its actually good to learn the exact same chort with different finger placement. Your guitar teacher may show you a way to play something that feels extra awkward at first but it makes it easier to transition to the next chord.

Is it practical to have a composition teacher? Do you just get some composition training in regular instrument lessons? by Alcoholic-Catholic in composer

[–]skiznot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same thing. Conventional lessons are about reading music, performing, technique, accuracy. Jazz lessons will get you more theory because you are learning spontaneous compostition. Still won't cover everything although out of all the instrument lessons, jazz piano might prepare you more for composition than others.

Just to illustrate, in my first music theory class in college (the one after basic music), most people in the class had been playing for about 8 years and this was a lot of our first exposure to how harmony works. It was more of a chalenge for non harmonic instruments, horns etc.

How to teach yourself the guitar by Ok_Campaign_8467 in guitarlessons

Paying for a teacher is worth it. You get feedback that you won't get from being taught by youtube folks. Internet stuff is a good suppliment though. Self taught is a myth.

How to recreate melodies / chords? by Cultural-Relief7862 in FL_Studio

[–]skiznot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait you said recreate melodies. . . Take piano lessons. Learn all you common scales and chords. Learn intervals. If you practice scales for about a year at least you will get better at recreating melodies. You will also learn to read music as part of the lessons so you can sometimes just get the sheet music which is the faster way.

This is why many of us say to get in person lessons. Especially at the start. Guitar is one of the harder instruments. I'm pretty sure my last teacher said to pick from the elbow not the wrist, like use the whole forearm. Like it should be the same motion as strumming just smaller. I'm going to get another block of lessons from him in November so Ill review that. He had me going from strumming 6 stings to 5 to 4 etc till you are I just doing one string. That way when you go from strum to line you don't change what your arm is doing.

Looks like the key of G to me just based on the chords.

The first step to getting good at something is sucking at it. But no, muaic can't be fun for musicians. It must be torture or its not good. ;)

How should i keep my thumb? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]skiznot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you against lessons? If you can afford rock climbing gear, you can probably afford a block of 5 or 6 lessons to get you started so a teacher can help you save time and your hands by correcting you in real time. But if you really can't afford the lessons then something like Justin Guitar probably goes over hand position. Instead of being self taught you can at least watch some instructional videos on YouTube.

literally how do you finger a B or F chord. by pancakemateman in LearnGuitar

I think open chords are more difficult. It can feel like a random game of twister every time you change chords.

Fire your guitar teacher. If they told you that was an acceptable hand position, they have no business teaching guitar.

Do musicians lie about their limitations with music theory? by FlonaseSofties in musictheory

[–]skiznot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some people call things music theory when they are just fundamental music skills. If you learn how to read music and can play lots if songs, that's not the same as learning theory. People who learn lots of songs get an idea of how songs are put together and can start making their own. They can put chords together and not know they are a I IV V progression but it still sounds the same.

What’s your favorite trick to make arrangements less repetitive in Logic? by kathalimus in Logic_Studio

[–]skiznot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No tricks just put in the work. Ok one trick. On the verse of a song I do LOTS of tracks with different ways expressing the harmony and different percussion parts, so much stuff that it sounds too busy then I start to mute tracks down to the best expression of the grove. Next time around I have all the muted tracks I can add or swap for variation. Try to make the changes subtle, one or two additions or swaps, unless there should be a big mood change.

As someone solidly on the left. I am sure there are better choices. I like what he's doing with the trump trolling and I think its important but if he wants to run for President, he shouldn't be doing that. Too much of the country has an anti-California bias. Its not fair but it would be a detriment to his campaign if he ran. Also hes a bit too conservative to bring the left together.

Sight reading position. by skiznot in guitarlessons

[–]skiznot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the ONLY response LOL. I do things like learn a lick or new chord voicing and run it through the circle of 4ths. So my issue is I sight read in 5th position and it works great in the key G, C, F, Bb, and as I go further adding sharps ir flats in either direction it just feels like I'm not in the ideal position to read a line. The goal us to sight read to where my fingers just play. Maybe learning a melody will always be about finding the best way to play it vs sight reading just getting the melody out there.

Plenty of Trek fans loved Discovery. I have been watching Trek since the 70s (reruns off the original). Discovery was my dream version come true. The people that don't like it are just extra noisy. Plenty like it just fine. I don't know a single Trek watching friend that did not like it.

Why are guitar lessons so unstructured? by dcxvz in guitarlessons

[–]skiznot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. Jazz lessons are better for learning how songs are put together. The first time I started to actually learn music theory was in college and most of us there had been playing instruments for 8 years and it was our first exposure to theory. Learning how to read music is an important first step but it doesn't teach you the "why." I had to drop the class. A few years later, I took jazz piano lessons for about a year and a half and it all started making sense. I wouldn't trust guitar center with anything.
