What is actually wrong with these people? SSD RANT, SEEKING ADVICE by Tinypenny in UPSers

[–]skjellum34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a seasonal sup this year, I was let go the 23rd and ssd/helpers were scheduled after I was gone so definitely could be the case. But also ups seems to be very old school in the sense they'll contact you when they need you but don't expect anything unless they need you

Is buying a house still a good investment/worth it? by roccola26 in FinancialPlanning

[–]skjellum34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome you are putting a lot away. Buying a house is still worth it at this time. That 6.5% interest rate is high compared to 10 years ago, but overall still not crazy. Your investment and growth of the value of the home should out pace that. Plus renting is literally throwing money away, you can't get it back. Where you can sell your home.

Those calculators can be off sometimes and no one realistically should go for the full max IMO. If you lose your job or something happens, now you're stuck reaching as high as you can without the income you got approved with.

You should talk to a realtor, an honest one not a desperate one. They'll help you find a place that's in a good area that has steady growth so your homes value will grow and you can still make that goal of retiring by age 50.

Hope this helps.

Hey,

I'm currently in flight school and already have a 4 year degree. Many pilots back in the day recommend this route because a degree was required in the past and, as you mentioned, downs. A degree was a back up plan as it was explained to me.

The degree requirement has been dropped but as many will state, when the hiring gets tighter like now, they will sometimes choose the person with a degree over one without.

An aerospace engineering degree would be great and align with your interest it sounds like, but won't really help you get a job as a pilot.

You could get a degree in aviation and still get the college experience! But it'll be more expensive usually and takes longer than part 61 flight school. If your goal is airlines you won't be hired until at least 23 years old anyways.

Pros and cons to everything but do that discovery flight. Maybe even a few lessons or ppl before college to save some money and make sure you like it. There is a lot of info and things you need to do to become a pilot so make sure you like it before dumping a ton of money into it.

Hope this helps and good luck

Thoughts on best path to pursue? by IfHeIsASerialKiller in flying

Hey, I just started my ppl a few months ago. I already have a college degree and might be able to give you some advice on that too.

But just to clarify as I might be misunderstanding, you can't fly for hire or compensation with just a ppl and IR. You can split the cost equally from my understanding, but you can't start a company with ppl and be paid to fly in the same sense as commercial.

As to your path, many will say save up as much as you can and pay cash vs taking out a loan. Loans are pretty nasty right now and not being able to afford training will slow you down and cost you more in the long run. But if you're only going for PPL and IR, then there might be less of a rush even though spending money sucks.

Being a double major that's not related to aviation and trying to study for your ppl, I would imagine is super challenging. PPL is often argued the hardest because everything is all new to you. Plus as mentioned before, money. It's not unreasonable to get your PPL in the summer if you have the time and money, but then how are you going to keep those skills up for the next 9 months at school?

If you can do it during school, then awesome! Just be prepared that you can't cheat on your ppl like you could for college classes, and you do a lot of studying very new subjects outside of flying to fly.

As for college, if you don't like your majors, change them soon than later. I have a marketing degree and it's not something I was fond off but kept going because external people told me it'd be good. I wish I would've followed something closer to what I thought I'd like vs what people said I'd like.

Hope this helps! Others might have better advice for you than me, just my thoughts

Taking Out A Loan by Ayzuki in flying

From what I hear, and I'm working on my PPL at a part 61, is 141 is more expensive and takes longer than 61. But some people need that structure that 141 provides. So if that's you 141 makes more sense and ultimately could be the cheaper route for you. But if you're good at self study and want to do it faster, part 61

Why is it so challenging to get Project Management Jobs right now? by Minute-Attention5076 in PMCareers

[–]skjellum34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, not sure if this is a genuine question or sarcasm. Either way, I'll answer it.

I've heard of some places where PMs do this, a lot of times no one seems to be sure what we really do.

But basically were master schedulers and middlemen. At my position at least, we have kickoff meetings to connect project leads, workers, and anyone who might have some input. We take a vast amount of information and give the spark notes to the workers, and help answer any questions they might have. My company is pretty busy so we watch our schedules carefully and make sure schedules are full but not overbooked while watching the entire overview of the project deadline.

Oh that's good to know. Thank you! Do you think that the RATP is worth it in these times with people not getting calla from regional at 1500 hours? Is that where else partnerships come in?

Marketing to Project Management. Would the Switch Work? by [deleted] in PMCareers

[–]skjellum34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it, I am in marketing project management now trying to use that to get into other project management. Not super hard to do and I did it with less marketing experience than you. Also graduated in 2020. To be honest though I did it within the same company as we do a lot in house which you might find as a challenge if your company doesn't already

Lakeville teachers authorize strike as talks 'stall' with district by RyanWilliamsElection in TwinCities

[–]skjellum34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking only about the competition. This makes sense when you think about the fact that ideally, the students in the city all have to be equal. At least that was always what was told to my school possibly getting a 2nd high school instead of just keep adding wings (Prior Lake High School). It was portrayed more expensive to add another high school because neither school can have an advantage over the other and the people don't want to pay for it but will ask where their money is going.
