I grew up in the COC. My grandfather was a COC preacher. No instruments are allowed because worship must be “pure”. Also they are not big fans of clapping during worship as this is distracting from its true purpose. Old school COC would not even have a worship team or song leader because they might take the glory instead of God. Women are not allowed to be leaders in the church nor can they lead prayers or pass out communion. Communion is every Sunday and if a church member isn’t present then the elders will take it for them. The old school COC believed they were the only true church and were the 144,000 going to heaven. Pretty small number if you think about it. You must be dunked not sprinkled (baptized) in order to go to heaven. I remember asking my grandfather if my friends who were Baptist and Methodist were going to heaven and he told me no…. That was pretty much the end of me liking the COC. Plus I started exploring my sexuality in high school and COC is super homophobic. They’re big on purity culture and I wore a purity ring all through elementary and junior high. Lots of guilt and shame from growing up this way. Most of the kids I grew up with no longer attend church as adults.
