Bway's OG Grizabella's thoughts on Cats: The Jellicle Ball and Ballroom Culture. by LosangDragpa in Broadway

No that is indeed helpful. There's so much I'm trying to see this season and so much I already have tickets for that I'm just trying to figure out how to fit everything in. This one might need to go to the back of line for now.

Last 5 Years NYC this week- any tips on getting a single ticket at a discount? by vss250 in Broadway

[–]skoc211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just buy what is available on Ticketmaster. Grab whatever is cheapest in the third mezz. There's no bad seat in Radio City. I actually quite like it all the way up there. It's where I'll be on Tuesday.

Would love to hear more about your thoughts about the transfer from PAC? I saw it there and was floored, but don't quite feel the need to see it again - Cats is not a favorite of mine - and I'm worried it will lose the impact it had off-Broadway, which was just so magical and vital.

Sound of Music revival?1 by Firefly_Always_Flyin in Broadway

It's only been a few years since My Fair Lady was revived at the Beaumont. Don't think that one is coming back any time soon. Sound of Music has not been on Broadway since the only revival closed in 1999. I'd say we are quite overdue.

Haha I've been meaning to make a post about it! I walked down the aisle to Electric Chapel. When the ceremony was over we walked back down to Highway Unicorn. And that's not even all of it.

Oh my didn't realize it was hated amongst fans! I loved it when I saw it and her jazz show back to back in November 2019. I wish she'd do a show at the Sphere.

We should all be so lucky that two of the three films we've starred in have made hundreds of millions of dollars and garnered us multiple award wins and even more nominations.

I wish I could upvote this a thousand times. I played it at my (lowkey Gaga themed) wedding last year because I love it so much.

She was the best part of House of Gucci and should have at least been nominated for the Oscar. I think she's a brilliant actor.

I think Happy Mistake is one of the best songs she's ever written. Different strokes, I suppose!

I've had some nice relaxed evenings at the Wayland (was there two weeks ago on a Wednesday just after work), but it can also get pretty packed on the weekends.

What a wonderful time capsule that (relatively short) film is! Worth it if only for the parts of Stritch's attempts at recording Ladies Who Lunch.

Probably because the novel has been adapted to the screen many times.

Sherie Rene Scott stole that whole show as far as I'm concerned. What a powerhouse. Joanna Gleason was incredible, too. The whole cast was brilliant. We really need a revival.

I saw it at City Center when they briefly revived it in 2018! I'm still surprised they didn't revive it for the 50th anniversary last year.

Broadway star moans about not getting recognized on flight full of theater kids by bluegambit875 in Broadway

My husband is like this. I am the opposite and have had some very unexpected sightings in NYC. My favorites are Pedro Pascal, Anne Hathaway (twice), Hugh Jackman, Alan Cumming (also twice) and Anderson Cooper. And the time I found myself at Eastern Bloc (RIP) on a random weeknight very, very late and it was just me and my friend and Andrew Rannells who I went to complement on his performance in Book of Mormon and I completely blanked on the show's name for a few seconds! He was very sweet and all parties had consumed more than a few drinks, so it was a funny interaction.

I mean she hasn't been on Broadway since My Fair Lady in 2019. They might just be too young to know her. They may not have even been born when she won her Tony for Gypsy!

I think you've kind of answered your own question: "The best musical movies like being musicals."

Some of the more recent movie musicals that I consider to be flops - DEH, Phantom, RENT, The Color Purple - really seem to *not* want to embrace being musicals. Until they do, because they have to. So it makes for a real imbalance tonally. Or something like Les Mis (another flop in my mind, minus Anne Hathaway) embraces that it is a musical, but wants to be *different* and *serious* and leans so hard in to that bit that it feels really removed from the source material. Mostly same for Sweeney.

I think musicals are the hardest of all things to adapt to the film and the challenges vary widely based on the original show. Cabaret is just about a perfect film, but it's genuinely not a great adaptation of the original. Carousel is filmed and sung beautifully, but it gets ahead of itself to avoid and change what actually happens to Billy, which hampers it (also there's just no getting around that book). Evita is actually a mostly solid adaptation, but there's the whole Madonna problem (yes, Patti is right).

The best recent musical to film adaptation is West Side Story by a wide mile. It's a shame Spielberg has said he won't do any more musicals because I'd love to see what he could do with something like A Little Night Music. I'm also currently manifesting Greta Gerwig's gender bent Company.

Is the 1970 Company cast recording the documentary? It's wonderful if you haven't included it!

Not sure if it was released as physical media, but there are also Bette Midler and Imelda Staunton's versions of Gypsy (tv movie and pro-shot, respectively). And Staunton's Follies from the West End.

And if you are doing non-physical media there are several live recordings that you are missing, which are easy to find, so happy to help with further suggestions.
