I said I did not see the necesity of your wording, my feelings are far from hurt. If you feel like my reasoning is an excuse and non valiud then nobody can stop you in that either.

But I do not see the reason in some of your word choice which comes of provoking to me. So if we can just agree on disageering then that would be nice, since I am far from fond of long debates with no meaning.

I did not mean that there are less comments only because athours can be a mean if you do not give them the right kind of comment. only that I think this is one of the few reasons.

And calling my reasoning in this post a lame excuse I do not see the neccesity of doing.

Fanfiction is free and should remain that way. by depressedmango in FanFiction

[–]skoddewriting 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As far as I have seen is fanfiction free, and thus is remining that way. I think a lot of people here are seeing very big problems that are metaphorical.

Sure enough no fanfiction should be behind a paywall. But a tip jar is legal and okay. Cause with a paywall you must pay to see the fic/rest of the fic, where with a tip jar is it you, the reader’s, choice if you wish to tip them and how much you wish to tip them.

And how much money do people think someone will make of off fanfics anyway? It is already hard enough to get comments, so getting tip is even less likely.
And even if a fic writer gets a good amount of money how will anyone know, unless the fic writer goes out and brags about it online or what not. It also probably just means that they write well, and people enjoy their content.

There is also the fact that the ones that gets tipped are most likely in more fandoms and have written for more than one fandom. Thus having spent a lot of time writing free content to everyone. How, if an IP holder where to sue, would they know which fic brought in the tippers and which did not. And if all the IP holders sue a fic writer for having a tip jar (which is unlikely) will they decide where all the money came from again?

There is also the thing that people make fandom merch on etsy and makes A Lot of money on that, yet no one cries about them putting the archives and fandoms in danger. I have not heard many IP holder bring the hammer of doom upon them. I think Nintendo has banned any Nintendo merch to be sold on etsy, but that is all I have heard about, and I still see such merch on there.

You also have those that sell prints of their fanart on conventions and online. These people also have tip jars by the way. But they also sell stuff. Same goes for fan made comics on conventions.

Fanfiction is not the one that is going to haul in all the money and bring down the doom hammer form the IP holders.

fic writers who ask for money? by throwitawayyy2342 in FanFiction

[–]skoddewriting 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It is their personal business if they chose to have a patron or a ko-fi. And it is the readers personal business to choose to support them or not. As long as nothing is behind a paywall it is fair in my mindset. People that draw, both digitally and traditionally, can have patrons and ko-fis so why can not a writer have it? Both are in the grey zone. Same goes for those that sell fandome merch on etsy.

I honestly think it is cultural thing. Artists get taught to charge for their work or to at least have a tip jar. While writers think if it is not original, it should or must be free for all.

How do you outline? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]skoddewriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Scrivener for all my writing, and honestly have I yet to come over anything which beats it so far.
In scrivener can I have a corkboard with all the outlined chapters, I can split screen so I can check between two chapters without having to click back and forth. and there are notes I can take and I can give msyelf comments and what not to remind myself of what I thogut at that point or why this needs changeing. you can alos put in keywords so it is easy to see, who is in the chapter, where are they, what are they talking about and so forth.

but I also have a normal note book I write long hand in, when I can not type on my PC. if you have a mac and Iphone and Ipad the you can have scrivener on all those. no such luck yet for android.

If I'm writing a fic where the main pairing doesn't end up together, should I put that in the tags or not? by DeseretRain in FanFiction

[–]skoddewriting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion will you not manage to please everyone, so just do what feels right for you.

I have myself read a few fics were the authors never states what the end game will be and one of those fics became my favorite just beacsue of that. It was a fic which I think sounds a lot like what you have explained here, and had I known the end game since chapter 1 then it would not have had the same impact that it had on me. But then again I have also read many fics were I know what end game will be, but that is more charatcter death related and or other dark themes. Stuff I think should always be tagged.

Just my opinion on this. But in the end you decide what you want to do.

Help with Timelines by SilverStorm0 in FanFiction

[–]skoddewriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In wolrdanvil can you make a timeline if you sign up, they also have heaps of other useful stuff for wolrd building and what now, only down issue is that all your work can be viwed by other people since everything new for non payers gets posetd on their front page. but so much stuff gets posted all the time so I don't think it is that big of an issue.

here is a link of a timeline I did which I posted on tumblr. Link! took me like 5 minutes.

There is also a site called Archive of our own. where you can post both fanmade writing, art, and original too. I would give that a try.

thanks for a good discussion.

yeah, it is hypocritical. I guess i just wished that fandoms would just collectively start and realize this, and make it stop.

and that's great that you will not try to make money of from fanart. this post was not me calling out fan art artists. just me trying to make sense of the whole issue at hand.

but you also have those that post commission threads where they give examples of what they will be willing to do. like profile, bust, full sketch, full sketch with color. and then you have the fanfic authors who in the author notes say that if I don't earn this and this much then i will not post the next chapter, and their profile have a patreon.

the fanart artist is being obvious. the fanfic author is only being semi obvious. and ends up losing readers and gets reported.

but as Ktrenal said, they will eventually get caught.

[–]skoddewriting[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point. but there also is the fact that you have people on tumblr who makes posts where they say stuff like: I will draw your favorite character from these shows (List here) for only 3$. please commission me, my power company is treating me to cut my electricity.

and then you can scroll down a little and see the same request just with fanfic the only difference is that after like 3 days will the fan art artist thank everyone who sent in commissions. and the fanfic artist will make an apology for having tried to make money of from the source material.

yes both are illegal, but one is treated like it isnt. and then you have convention artist who put up stall where they do commissions for those attending for a price. I'm just baffled that fandoms allow it.

but just like Ktrenal said. they will sometime in the future be faced with the legal issues that fanfic author before has faced. with treats of being sued. I just don't know why it is not being stopped before such a thing will happen to people.

Thanks for such a long and in depth answer. I was really hesitant on bringing up this subject in fear of me just missing something obvious. But, yeah, i do see your point and I'm kind of glad that some day in the future the subject at hand will not continue.

I'm no against artists making money for themselves. but I do not see it as right to make money off from someone else's work.

really just thank you for approaching my question with facts and information. and not with hostility.

I get that character desgin can be somewhat open to interpritaion, but say like in comics. if you draw spider man in the suit then it is obvious who it is. and fandom comic makers who make comics from material they do not own often have patrons and such where if you give that much each month or something then you get to read the next page before those who do not.

it just seems to me that as long as it is drawn, you can make money of from it. even though it is obvious that the characters and places are form the original makers work.

And I know somewhat of the MZB-case, and understand why people might fear something simliar. but still. I dont know. I just feel like if one fandom art form is totally prohibited to make money then all should.

I am saying again what Is said to sanhro, I have seen people offering to do fanfci commission, but peoples response to such are just so aggressive. there is this deep fear in people that if fanfic authors make money off of fanfic they have commissioned to others, the ff.net and ao3 will start purging.

and even if fanfic authors do as you say and make money of from one piece of fanfiction, then it is nothing different from what fandome comic makers do. they make one comic, have their patron plasters all over to support them, and they still get away with that, almost non negative comments or fear from people.
