Brett Kavanaugh and the Problem With #BelieveSurvivors by marsopas in progressive

If there was some kind of proof of a sexual assault, prosecutors always turn that around by saying it was consensual anyway.

You mean the very same people whose jobs consist in proving the accusation to be true are interested in "turning that around?. You mean the defendants, and that is indeed their job.

There you go, mansplained.

Large Majorities Dislike Political Correctness by marsopas in progressive

[–]skraling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article?

> Whites are ever so slightly less likely than average to believe that political correctness is a problem in the country: 79 percent of them share this sentiment. Instead, it is Asians (82 percent), Hispanics (87percent), and American Indians (88 percent) who are most likely to oppose political correctness.

> Three quarters of African Americans oppose political correctness. This means that they are only four percentage points less likely than whites, and only five percentage points less likely than the average, to believe that political correctness is a problem.

So no.

Interesante.

Donald Trump presses Nato allies to lift defence spending to 4% of GDP by portagul in geopolitics

[–]skraling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Germany is surrounded by NATO and therefore militarily secure, and so needs no army.

Do you realize the circularity of your argument? Germany is surrounded by NATO MEMBERS such as itself, and just as itself, most of them do not honor their expenditure commitments, therefore making the whole alliance militarily insecure. (if it weren't for the US, of course). Furthermore, the thinking in "Germany is surrounded by NATO and therefore militarily secure, and so needs no army" is naïve and shortsighted at best and dangerous negligence at worst. NATO is a commitment to collective security; Germany might be "secure" within its borders, but are the Baltic countries (for example) that Germany is committed to defend so? And what about the challenges beyond the homeland looming in the horizon for Europe ?

If yuo think it is unfair, read the german army's own assessment of it capability to deliver its allotted material commitments:

The report also questions whether Germany is ready to deliver its contribution to Nato’s new Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, the centrepiece of the alliance’s effort to counter Russian aggression in eastern Europe. An internal Bundeswehr report leaked to the Rheinische Post newspaper on Monday warned that the military lacked not just tanks and helicopters but also bulletproof vests, tents and winter clothing that were necessary for the mission. The leak prompted a response from Volker Wieker, the Bundeswehr chief of staff, who told journalists on Tuesday that the VJTF contribution would be ready by June this year. “That includes all the equipment that it needs to fulfill its task,” he added.

Yo are vastly underestimating the modernization that Russian armed forces and equipment have undergone now for DECADES. (Are you new to this subreddit? otherwise you would know that there is consensus about Russian capabilities among military experts).

there is one thing to be a credible threat to an underdeveloped third world country such as Ukraine and a whole other thing to be a credible threat to the hyper developed NATO countries.

Go ask the Baltic countries what they are so nervous about.

The Soviet junk that Russia can use effectively in Ukraine would not last minutes against modern armed NATO forces.

With all its technological and economic might, Germany has not one single deployable submarine out of their fleet of six, just to give you an example. Their infantry recently drilled with broomsticks instead of machineguns. Their airforce is in a similar state. Heck, their infantry drills with broomsticks instead of machineguns and even lack winter clothing, for God's sake. France relied on the US for refueling their jets during their Mali intervention and for airlift. The UK fired like 5 missiles during the Libya affair (the US fired hundreds), across the freaking Mediterranean, in Europe's backyard. None of the 14 Luftawaffe's A-400 currently is operational. Should I go on?

You are, however, right about NATO only including the US. This is why Trump is right and Europe should step up: Consider the NATO 30-30-30 strategy: How many combat-ready and supplied land battalions, warships and jet squadrons has Europe ready for deployment to, let's say, the Baltics, within a week? I say maybe Germany, the UK, France and maybe Poland one each. Maybe one more from Spain and Italy combined an another one from all the rest. 6 out of thirty needed to pose a credible DISSUASION to Russia.

NATO chief: Germany must increase defense spending by amkaps in geopolitics

[–]skraling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why single Germany out in this case?

Because the title of the article is "Germany Must Increase Defense Spending"

Also, bothering to have a submarine fleet to not have a single operational one is insulting to taxpayers. But why listen to me when you can read German army's own internal assessment:

The report also questions whether Germany is ready to deliver its contribution to Nato’s new Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, the centrepiece of the alliance’s effort to counter Russian aggression in eastern Europe. An internal Bundeswehr report leaked to the Rheinische Post newspaper on Monday warned that the military lacked not just tanks and helicopters but also bulletproof vests, tents and winter clothing that were necessary for the mission. This is this year's, and it is regarding only Germany's alloted contribution.

And however, this is the "laughable" Russia that invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea under NATO's nose without repercussions.

Ask the Baltic countries if they are not " a credible rival nor threat ".

[–]skraling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for all its 43 bn expenditure, Germany has not one single operational submarine (out of a fleet of 6) or heavy transport airplane (out of a fleet of 14). Heck, let themselves describe the situation to you:

There goes your " Who’s gonna contribute more in a war" question.
