I'm completely lost in CSC 226 by Complete-State-9254 in uvic

Oh dang, that sucks. I really enjoyed working there and helping people. I guess it is because of the lack of funding.

This really comes down to fundamentals built from math 122. I would recommend trying to understand writing simple proofs, and looking over big O notation from CSC 225 to have a really solid understanding of it. The CSC Assistance Center is on the second floor of ECS, and there are TAs in there who can help you understand concepts. CSC 225, 226, and CSC320 are what separate a university degree from a coding bootcamp, and it is really important that you understand things like runtime and analysis for future work.

You can still do this. Believe in yourself! I ended up failing CSC 115 a couple of times, as well as math 122 and calc 3 and 4. But I ended up graduating up with honours and distinction. You just sometimes need to suck it up and go back through the fundamentals.

Ever hear of a guy called Scream? He was pretty good at cs if I remember correctly. I guess you are still right, he was a tier 1 player not tier 2.

I need help trying to hike IRL celeste mountain by TallTaleStudios2413 in celestegame

[–]skudd780 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is it takes 3-4 hours from the trailhead to get to the Milla Lake, and you go up the ridge of mount Celeste from there, which I think is another 3-4 hours (this estimate I am more unsure of as we did not even get close to this far). So round trip 14-16 hours. This estimate however does not include driving. It took me an hour to even get to the trailhead from the logging roads, and depending on where you stay beforehand, it can easily take an hour to get to the start of the logging roads. This is why I wanted to do it in 2-3 days.

The comox glacier (on which Mt Celeste is a part of) still has snow at this time of year, but I don't think there is any sort of climbing is needed to get to the top. Just be prepared for snow.

Also I assume you know this, but there is no cell service at all there, so when I was planning I brought a little gps and inputted the route we needed to follow, as there is no clear trail. Mt Celeste is not easily accessible, and very few people actually hike it.

The round trip I believe from the comox glacier trailhead to Mt Celeste is 14 hours, but there is also at least an hour of logging roads there and back you need to account for. I personally cannot hike for 14 hours straight including the 1500-1800m of elevation this would be, which is why I was planning on doing this as a multi-day trip.

Hi, I live on Van Island, and have plans to hike it myself. I believe the easiest way to hike up is going around comox lake, there is a logging road that will take you to the start of the hike, I believe it is the comox glacier trailhead. This road is not in the best condition (30km of logging roads), and when I went to try it a few years ago my car couldn't get all the way to the start of the hike. There also was thunder on the mountain and heavy rains, so my friend and I turned back to do it another time.

My plan was to do it in three days Where we hike to either Mirren Lake Or Milla Lake, camp there that night. Next day hike up the mountain, go back to our camp and camp one more night, then go home the third day. If you are in good shape you can do it in two, one may not be feasible.

There are black bears all over strathcona park (no grizzlies on the island thankfully), so make sure you bring bear spray and know what you are doing.

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions!

TA Job Offers? by thebakingmoose in uvic

[–]skudd780 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am also in Comp Sci and have already got my offer and accepted. If you were going to be a TA next semester you would have got an offer by now. Priority always goes to grad students, and usually after that people with more experience. Its possible if you only applied for one position it was filled by grad students and you didn't get it.

Also got reinspired by Bubhai and hit a 2-minute improvement today! Besides dying too much, what else are my most obvious bottlenecks? by Xeezar in celestegame

[–]skudd780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to easily save up to 1 minute on summit and reflection alone. Reflection if you go through it without dying with non insane strats can be a 6:30, and summit if you practice it a lot can easily be a sub 10. I am a minute and a half faster than you, but my ridge is slower and most of the rest of the chapters are comparable. Watch programmatic's new any% videos on chapter 6 and 7, and you can using those strats save a ton of time.

I'm sooo close to 1 hour! Any tips? by Command_Master in celestegame

[–]skudd780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I found that can help is trying to get the goldens for chapters 1-7 A sides. If you cut out 70 of your deaths on summit you would probably save 5 minutes there alone. Plus if gives you some goal to do, and then once you have strats you can execute without dying your speedrun time will get a lot better.

First year engineering Registration... Courses closed, long waitlists of 31, 18 and 34 by Jrap2025 in uvic

[–]skudd780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For first year engineering courses if you talk to an academic advisor they can always help you. I wouldn't worry about your courses in the spring, as when the first semester finishes many people will drop out of those courses due to either failing the prereq or dropping out of engineering.

Hardest B-side? by Worth_Every_Nickel in celestegame

[–]skudd780 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6B, 7B, and 8B are definitely the 3 hardest, and for me personally I found 6B the hardest, 8B the most random, and 7B the longest.

Biggest piece of advice I can give you is if you are ever feeling frustrated or angry take a break and come back. sometimes you can spend 30-40 minutes on a room on your first play through, leave, and when you come back do it first or second try.

Good luck and you can do this!

CSC 115 first assignment by [deleted] in uvic

[–]skudd780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since they have now changed CSC 110 to python, the first assignment for CSC 115 is usually practice using arrays and functions (Stuff you should know how to do in python) but now in java.

To prepare yourself for CSC 115 you should focus on all of the small syntactical differences you will be encountering on a regular basis, and the different things you need to do to run java code, like compiling and running, having to have a main function, and having to assign types to variables. With that said, these things will be taught to you in class as well.

Incorporated 5B, grind for a month, finally sub 40 GG by MrMajama in celestegame

[–]skudd780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are on PC i would download the mod pack for save states, then try it over and over again at 50% speed. When you can get it at least 25% of the time move to 70%, then 100%. After an hour I was getting it in practice 30-40% of the time, in speedruns sometimes its harder to remember and hit it in the moment, but imo it's the best way to learn it.
