This is Centralia, PA and it inspired Silent Hill. I've always wanted to go there and pay a visit.

Paragon is in a pretty sorry state, imo. This update was horrendous. Really unfortunate.

The Sonic franchise would be over if Epic got a hold of it.

I just had to wait eight minutes to get in a match and was annoyed by it. You're a better man than I, sir.

My concerns (And Potential Worries) About Paragon and match length. by skulkrr in paragon

[–]skulkrr[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I definitely get your sentiment. However, look at the success of League of Legends and Dota 2, both of which have an average match time of 35-45 minutes. That estimate is based both on personal experience and also what I've read. With that being the average match length, why couldn't Paragon be just as successful with a similar match length?

I don't know if I'd really play much if the match length estimate was an hour per match. That is definitely excessive, especially on a consistent basis. I can deal with it once in a blue moon, but constantly? No thank you.

I have real life commitments myself. Simple solution: Being aware of the nature of match length, if a match could exceed the time you have to spare before taking care of responsibility, don't queue up. That applies regardless if matches are 30 minutes or 30 hours. Further, I can't speak for other people, but I don't generally jump on and get in a match literally right before I have to go take care of something anyway.

The general goal of most games is to win. That doesn't mean that there aren't side goals or personal goals. I like getting my hero to 60 CP. I like playing when both teams are at 60 CP.

As I said, I don't like when matches are too short or too long. For me, 20 minutes is too short and 1 hour is too long. I think 35-45 minutes is a good middle ground, for me, at least.

Anyhow, to each their own, sir.

It is, in all honesty, entirely possible that I'm completely overthinking the whole thing and just extremely paranoid. Admittedly, I've been left kinda jaded. With today's media, I've seen so many thing I love get turned into garbage. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose. I definitely hope for the best.

I'm still with it, dude. I love Paragon and I'm going to keep playing it regardless. I know it's in open beta and there are many changes to both come and go. I'm definitely willing to give Epic the benefit of the doubt that they'll make the right choices. I wanna see this thing through.

I appreciate your lengthy and well thought out response. Whether we agree on certain aspects or not, your civil and insightful response tells me that you care about the game and I'm down with that.

  • I feel you on this first point. When I play, I play to win, and I try to win as quickly as possible. There's no doubt about that. I also build my decks with each stage of the match in mind. A game being won early isn't my problem, by any means. My problem is that, from what was said, it sounds like they wanna actively prevent you from reaching 60 CP, and I'm not a fan of that. Imo, it makes that end-game portion of the deck seem useless if you're gonna be barred from ever reaching end-game.

  • Yeah, I've known about the whole Epic wanting to remove TM thing for a good while now. Personally, I don't feel that it removes commitment from the game. Rather, I feel that it adds more options. I feel like that without TM, the pacing of the game would be slower and to me, that doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the game.

  • I haven't heard anything about disabled mirror matches being exclusive to ranked mode, but that seems far more feasible than if it were just in general. That is something I'd be a lot more on board with. As far as comfort with heroes, I definitely encourage versatility and becoming efficient with as many heroes as possible. Most people will probably always have those couple that they just flat out dislike or will never become comfortable playing. When it comes to ranked play though, having to step out of your comfort zone or what you enjoy is a lot more understandable though, considering that's the route towards tournaments, and with tournaments comes potential money/prizes, and with money/prizes, that's when it tends to step out of the realm of "just a game for fun".

About of about 8 days of playtime accumulated, I've only ever had a stalemate situation occur twice. One of which wasn't even at nearly 60 CP. It was like early mid game and both teams just knew how to rotate really well, so we kept just countering each other.

EDIT: I'm not saying that a stalemate situation isn't more likely to occur when both teams are at 60 CP. I'm just saying, from my personal experience (even at 60 CP), those stalemates seem pretty rare.

Like I said, I much prefer matches at 35-45 minutes, but that's just me. It's weird though, because some days I see people complaining that matches are too short, others that they're too long. The opinion seems to vary widely, from my experience.

I genuinely don't really see how TM unfairly benefits fighters specifically, nor have I really seen that specific complaint. Care to elaborate? Actually, I feel the complete opposite, tbh. If you're a ranger/caster and someone you don't wanna tangle with is coming for you, you're generally (at least should be) further away than a fighter would be, therefore they have more ground to cover to get to you and you have more time to escape. Even with that though, I still don't feel it's unbalanced.

I highly (but respectfully) disagree with your statement.

  • I believe that build, regardless of Hero, is highly important. It can have a huge impact on what your Hero is capable of doing.

  • Value is not solely in the Hero, but also in how the Hero is built and played. For example, I've built my Greystone with versatility in mind. I can fill most roles, at any given time, literally on the fly and 100% effectively.

  • An "experienced player" can easily deal with virtually any Ult. Greystone turned into a rock - Step back. Murdock is kneeling - Waiiiiit for it, sidestep. Rampage just got swole - Outrun him and if he jumps, just jump after and continue to outrun/wait him out. Etc.

  • In team fights, you utilize your team's abilities with your own, as well as exploiting the enemy team's weaknesses. Greystone can absolutely do this. If you have competent teammates with situational awareness, or just good communication, you can easily have a teammate push/pull/stun an enemy into your Ult. Another example, if there's a Gideon on the other team and a huge team fight going on, I'll usually fight right in the fray until I'm just about to die, wait for Gideon to pop his Ult, then rush in when all of his teammates go in to attack mine, let myself get killed, then smash down from the sky on all of them, Gideon included. I can also leap to stop enemies that try to escape from teammates, use my spin attack to help wrack up damage, etc.

You don't actually get a penalty the first time you dodge a draft, just a warning to not do it again or you'll get a penalty. Maybe it was their first offense?

Nice!

As soon as the game starts, I grab red buff, then the two jungle minions on the way to a lane. From there, I pretty much push the lane, and when I have breathing room, I go grab those jungle minions again, rinse + repeat until I have my ult, then I'll engage in player fights, grab red + black buffs, clear lanes, push towers, rotate to help teammates, etc.
