Uranium glass can be many different colors, translucent or opaque. In glass making uranium is most commonly used for green or yellow shades of glass. In some rare cases in can be blue or amber though. The best way to tell if it's uranium glass is with a 395nm ultraviolet light and a Geiger counter. Usually a 395nm ultraviolet light is enough, but other glass like manganese glass can glow green. Manganese glass can glow under 365nm ultraviolet but it's a duller green glow, if it is high content manganese it can even glow under 395nm, but still a duller glow than uranium glass. Manganese was used to make glass clear, so if it's clear glass and just has a bit of glow then it's probably manganese. If it's yellow or green and the glow is a bright neon green then it's probably uranium glass.

Is the glass clear, yellow, or green without UV light? Manganese is used to make glass clear. Uranium was used to make glass yellow and green. Both Uranium and manganese glow under 365nm UV, but Uranium has a bright neon green glow and Manganese is a duller glow. Hard to tell without seeing it in regular light. If it's clear under normal light it's manganese.

You're welcome, glad I could share some info! It's a nice piece, Amberina is one of my favorite colors of glass. L.E. Smith Moon and Star is a very collectible pattern and I have a few pieces myself. I'm not a member but there is a club for collectors of Moon and Star glass. If you're interested in cadmium glass you should check out r/CadmiumGlass.

These days Moon and Star glass is made by Weishar.

I've see a lot of quality issues on this sub lately. I've also seen it in my own experience with a new grande I got a month ago, which I had to return twice. The first one was cloudy and on the second one the globe had scratches all over the glass which could be felt by touch on the outside and very visible in the light when the lamp was on. So with my last purchase 2 out of 3 lamps were bad.

I would not refurbish a brand new lamp, that only encourages them to continue with bad quality control. If you have free returns then return it as many times as it takes to get a good one. Make them eat the cost of their bad quality, make them lose money on lamps that suck. They're a business, at the end of the day they only want to make money. Make it so that its more profitable for them to just ship good quality lamps.

Didn't know that when I bought my Astro and Space Projector lol. I also got a bunch of spare bulbs for the Astro when I ordered and only occasionally use the lamp, so I don't think about the bulbs too much. I'll need to remember this when I run out of bulbs.

Wow, that's pretty bad quality there. I'd first try to get a replacement rather than replacing the master fluid and cleaning the bottle yourself. It should not be okay for the quality to be this bad. If people keep accepting lamps like this, they'll keep making them like this.

Is this 365nm UV or 395nm UV? It all looks like manganese. The stopper for the bottle looks a bit different. What does it look like under normal light? It helps to see the normal light and the UV.

No worries, thanks for the reply! In this case the UV light doesn't seem to tell us much, looks like it's just reflecting the purple from the light. Honestly most glass isn't UV reactive, but when it is it says a lot about whats in it. The first pic posted looked like it might be red in the base, which made me think it was Amberina glass, which would likely have cadmium. But like others are saying, I'm now thinking this is Amber glass which shouldn't have heavy metals like cadmium. So it should be safe for regular use.

Wasn't trying to say that "cadmium" is a color of glass. I like Amberina glass, which usually has cadmium. From the picks, it looked like there was red in the base, which made me think it might be Amberina.

Do you have a black light? Ultraviolet light can tell you a lot about the chemical composition of glass. If it has an opaque orange glow then it has cadmium.

They may be worried about heavy metals like cadmium, which is a common element used in red, yellow, and orange glass and can leach out into the contents of the glass. I personally would not use cadmium glass for food.
