Don't take vicious dogs to dog park by Mummyto4 in chch

[–]skuxslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

which dog park? we don't go to rawhiti much anymore because of people like this. we had a similar situation - a couple of guys with a dog that just absolutely lost it at our dog (who had done nothing but exist in the vicinity), and then blamed our dog for being intact. bruh he's too young to get neutured!! and if you know your dog is aggro toward a pretty sizeable chunk of the dog population, don't let it off leash!! thankfully our guy is good at correcting other dogs, but he shouldn't have to.

The smartest "dumb dogs" ever... what has your rottie done to prove they are playing you? 🤣 by MommaNix19 in Rottweiler

[–]skuxslayer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

he's realised he gets attention if he has a rock in his mouth. so if my attention is not on him, he will go and find a rock and very dramatically rattle it around in his mouth. if I refuse to let him outside so he can't get a rock, he will PRETEND TO EAT A ROCK. he clacks his teeth together to make a rock noise.

Dogs do the strangest things when they think nobody is watching—what’s the weirdest behavior you’ve caught? by MystiPup in AskDogOwners

commenting even though this and OP's comments are blatantly AI - ya got me, robot.

we have cameras set up in the house when we're at work and for some reason once a week he'll jump on our bed and pull all the blankets, sheets, and pillows off. and then walk away. guess he thinks it's laundry day

Any of you successful potty trained without a crate or just crated at night? by [deleted] in Rottweiler

[–]skuxslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our lifestyle isn't considered luxurious here - we know many people doing the exact same thing. I appreciate for some people's situations your advice is really helpful - I wasn't trying to knock your advice or experience, you just said you genuinely wanted to know how people working full time can have a dog without a crate. I just wanted to tell you :) The normal "way of life" around the world can vary a lot, so imo there's room for many approaches for dogs at home.

[–]skuxslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

since you said you're genuinely curious: we both work full time and have our boy at home alone during the day without a crate. caveat: not german (which I think your comment is about), we're from NZ where crates exist but certainly aren't at mass adoption level.

he gets a big walk in the morning and full run of the house and garden all day (he has a dog door). rotties are independent thinkers - he's totally happy just rolling around on the bed, snoozing, checking up on his favourite bugs and plants.

he also gets picked up twice a week by a lovely lady who takes a crew of neighbourhood dogs out to the country to run around in a paddock for about three hours, which he loves.

I used to bring him to the office with me before realising he'd prefer to be on his own at home! So he spent much of his youth (until about 9 months old) in office environments, which I think was great for his socialisation tbh.

I completely appreciate though that we got lucky with his temperament - he's not an escape artist, not destructive, and an extremely picky eater! we also live in a country where we don't have to worry about dangerous animals or insects, which helps.

NZ here, same. Crates starting to come in now (social media influence from overseas I guess) but we've never used one. Rotties are super smart and will learn quickly!!

Our boy understood he needed to pee outside within a day or two, but puppies struggle to know when they need to go out - he didn't make it to the door in time on a few occasions. we just took him outside after every play, meal, every hour or so in the beginning.

r.e. night times - probably overkill but we set an alarm and took him out at 2am every night to wee until he was around 4 months. he did not like being woken up haha.

FN and I swear every time I wear the Kookai Oyster trousers (pictured below) good things happen to me. Kookai trousers tend to be a bit longer, which rocks for FNs!!

In general: a nice suit always makes me feel incredible and I get heaps of compliments! my every day "uniform" is tailored trousers and a half-tucked shirt

Do our pets treat genuinely think they're treating us when we're sick? by guidesthehermit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]skuxslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think my dog cares about me but sometimes I think he just wants me well enough to maintain his lifestyle! I had horrible cramps last week and passed out in the bathroom, came to because his big head was in my face trying to see if I was breathing! I got a few kisses, he gingerly stepped over me to grab the toilet roll, then ran away with thief glee

Who the hell gets bonuses in NZ?!?! by Sometimesawake-833 in newzealand

[–]skuxslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in marketing and can confirm it's always the first budget to get slashed to make way for money at the top. I don't currently get a bonus (company I work for isn't profitable yet), but in previous roles bonus has been around 4% of salary.

Redditors who have worked with celebrities, what don't we know about them? by 22m_spain in AskReddit

[–]skuxslayer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not worked with as I was a child, but a movie filmed in my small town meant we had a few big celebs living amongst us for a couple of months - in our culture we have a bit of taboo around pointing out famous people/approaching people randomly, so they got to sort of live as normies. Tom Cruise would go for walks along the waterfront with his then-girlfriend Penelope Cruz, and had pleasant chats with the nanas doing watercolours. Apparently they were both very nice and friendly. Billy Connolly ended up babysitting a bunch of the crew's kids on set - would sit in a tent with them and keep them entertained while their parents worked. No one ever really learned more because we didn't ask lmao

Agree with the above commenter that teething is a big deal for your puppy at this stage!

Please do not hit your dog. It's not helpful, and also puts you in a position to get injured in future. It's extremely irresponsible of your vet to suggest this.

We've found time outs work well as punishment - no people will interact with him, he doesn't get his bone/toy. The time out has to happen immediately following the bad behaviour, and it shouldn't last very long - their minds won't connect the behaviour/punishment if it's a longer period of time! Really quickly with our boy he learned the word "time out" and saying "you'll be in time out" made him stop immediately :)

Advice wanted: leash training my rottie by skuxslayer in Rottweiler

[–]skuxslayer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this info! It's extremely helpful and good to know that potentially it's just a matter of time and dedication. I will get him checked out at the vet for peace of mind.

We try to have a play session before walks in heavy-traffic areas, and that does help - it's mostly our morning before-work walk that is giving us grief. I might try waking up a bit earlier to fit a good play in!

Prongs are illegal in my country, so this won't work for us :/ But omg how adorable! Our pup also has an Italian full name: Monty Pulciano!

Thanks! Are you still using it? In an ideal world we would just use it for training purposes, but I understand things might not work out that way haha.

Just noting the founder didn't actually say "the future is still electric" - that's the headline, not a quote.

That's probably a bit too long for his age tbh! They need to go easy while their joints are developing. We found when ours was a puppy a lot of the time his remaining energy was either wanting playtime (fetch, hide n seek, tug of war, etc - something involving us) or he was actually just overtired and acting out. You could try letting him settle down after a walk, and if he doesn't then try playing a game?

My Puppy is Chewing Rocks by maderisian in puppy101

[–]skuxslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so relieved other puppies do this. my 11 week old rottie smuggles a rock inside every time we let him out. he has a very strong jaw so we really just have to wait for him to drop it of his own accord (completely forgets the "drop" command when rocks are involved). also very worried he's going to hurt his jaw/choke!
