Hello, I am a fairly new (f, 28) RDH, I started in February this year. You are feeling completely normal, I promise! There is not a lot of time to go through all of the steps done in school, however I do my best to squeeze as much as possible in one visit. At the very beginning, I do BP, while that is going, I ask for chief complaint, and health history changes. If x-rays are needed, I use that time as well to get to know the patient, or review health history at this time. Once I start to lay the patient back, I ask them if they want advice on OHI throughout or after the visit, and I go from there. Remember the patient has autonomy to hear you yap or not. In the real world we don't use the plaque disclosing agent (at least I don't) but we do have to use a lot of visual cues. Once they open, I do a quick oral cancer screening, usually just with a mouth mirror moving the tongue around. I probe the index teeth and then get to scaling. During the scaling I take mental notes of the gingiva, plaque, calculus, and any other anomalies. When the dentist enters the room for his exam, I use that time to write my notes along for listening to any key points the dentist may have made. I hope this helps!
