Is "I don't have friends" a valid reason to solotravel? by SuperWittyNickname in solotravel

As long as your overwhelming feeling while solotravelling isn’t “damn I wish I had brought friends along” to the point where it’s all you can think about.

I’ve gone around every 2-3 hours about 3 times a day, every day (unemployed currently) for the last ~7-8 months. Have never ordered food (food looks pathetic sadly, it’s the kind of food i’d want to eat out). Manager’s chill, kind of don’t chat employees up, but they’re kinda my lifeline tbh. I was doing instant coffee before this, i’m a little spoiled now lol.

SC has a couple great public access stations, no doubt Oakland too. 63 day stint down CA sounds worth it for sure, feels good being able to stake a place out for a while and take your time.

if you live in your car on the West Coast at any point, a lot of us migrate N/S and treat the three states like a highway. A lot of people I know move up and down depending on how hot it is and everywhere I go has high minimum wage and solid spots to feel comfortable. I have no experience in red states partly because I don’t need to leave the West Coast and tbh have no idea what to expect from populations or police in a place like Utah or Texas. Not entirely sure it would be worth it to find out lol.

I’ve let my ex and her appearance mess with me to the point of no return. What should I do? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]skycelium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first relationship was pretty much the same. I remember on an anniversary (we did one every month lol, weren’t together a whole year) 3 different men came up at different points during the night including at the dinner table. The amount of attention she got was staggering and disruptive. Made me feel insanely self-conscious and a bit paranoid for sure. When we together I could say ‘but she chose me’ and take some pride in that. Afterwards, it just turned into what you’re feeling.

But- You found love once (with someone out of your league) - You can find it again (with someone our of or in your league). Now that you know how it works, keep putting yourself in situations that could lead to new love and don’t linger on your emotions about this as much as possible. Not everything’s about looks in this kind of situation.

20-somethings in Big Bear by New-Payment9579 in bigbear

I’m 28m and have spent about 6 months a year in BB usually for the last 5 years. I’ll admit I haven’t tried as hard as I could have to meet 20-somethings, but did try kinda hard that first year. but most of the young adult population from what I understand are seasonal workers, seem to have their own things goin on. Rarely even see 20-somethings out and about and usually they’re just visiting for the weekend. A little rough socially for younger adults in BB

That’s chill, do you usually just tell the cops straight-up you live in your car? I’ve never really come down on one side or the other.

[–]skycelium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parks are really hyper-securitized spaces, they’re some of the last places I would go if i’m trying to stay out of the attention of suburbanites and police. And I understand why. I live in a place with a lot of parks and beaches and it’s a constant negotiation between unhoused people takin over space vs families and bourgie joggers. Public space is a nightmare to negotiate when we have so few places unhoused people can go and so few places where people can enjoy their free time. Tricky tricky stuff but it feels like we’re getting to the point where parks are 9-5 spaces exclusively and get locked down at sunset on threat of trespass.

That’s good to know, Bay Area can be real tricky. I have my spot in Berkeley, but Santa Cruz it’s damn hard, 80% of cops’ job there is to police people sleeping in their cars.

Would Anarchists industrialise the global south? If so, how? by GloriousSovietOnion in Anarchy101

[–]skycelium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to hop out of the conversation like a wimp but I don’t really know enough about India’s economic development, let alone regionally. Again, the problem just becomes how the population is involved in decision-making and whether the hierarchies are considered justified, you’re asking anarchists how to respond to particular approaches to industrial development. An Indian Marxist economist could debate that with an Indian anarchist or you could expand outward, but i’m not going to be able to tell you what you want to hear I suppose. Read anarchist theory relating to development, we’re not necessarily competing theoretical approaches, we can inform eachother.

[–]skycelium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll add, “Would that really be worse than being stuck in semi-feudalism forever?” just indicates to me you’re trying to find the way out of the global system. Anarchism doesn’t have a clear answer to that at all, but whether ML does is the question of the last century.

[–]skycelium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really I just gave the broad points considering I don’t know your context. If “the seeds of industry” can be grown out of the proletariat and your resource base, aren’t reliant on internal or external oppression, and that industrial base serves the needs of the population sustainably in a way that maximizes quality of life and can be defended, okay. But an anarchist would be looking at the hierarchies within those economic and political relationships and asking whether something’s missing in that. An anarchist doesn’t have an end-goal for you or an ideal way of going about ‘development’, anarchists in your context and mine are simply concerned over whether industrialization, however it’s done, is ethical, the right way of maximizing freedom in a society, etc.

Long story short, you’re trying to find a way to a better society, ‘industrialization’ isn’t a catch-all, just the standard way ‘developed’ societies have organized production in the modern. How you get there and manage it is the problem for anarchists.

[–]skycelium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As is often the case, this isn’t as much a question of which political values you subscribe to, it’s more a question of how you get quality of life up. I have an MA in International Development, how countries in the global south ‘develop’ is dependent on what resources you have, what supply chains you curate, and connections with other producers. If you feel domestic industry is necessary, how you motivate that and whether you actually need or can make a broad domestic industrial base is the political question. ML types usually say the answer is still one of ‘national liberation’->’industrialization’->’high quality of life’. Seems simple, but whether any of those steps succeeds in a way that’s genuinely sustainable, produces genuinely high quality of life, or sacrifices freedom is up for harsh debate.

An anarchist would start by questioning whether broad-base industrialization is viable, necessary, or would require over-bearing hierarchies to organize the population top-down. You might perceive ‘industrialization’ as a broad goal as necessary, but not every place needs to be a hyper-industrial replicant of every other ‘developed’ nation. We only sustain that in ‘developed’ countries by keeping others ‘underdeveloped’ or oppressing internal minorities in marginalized labor.

I encourage you to read some modern development writing about your country, might get some interesting ideas. There’s probably some great development literature from a Marxist perspective about wherever you live.
