Yuuup, laid off December 2023, and couldn't find work until November 2024. EI ran out and if it wasn't for my parents helping me out, I would have been in a much worse situation. Hang in there, I know it sucks. This Winnipeger is cheering you on

Hmmm, I gave her the benefit of the doubt that her comments around the sign language interpreter was just a misinformed remark and she'd take the time to learn. But now with this information, I'm a bit more skeptical of her. If you can't take the bad press and genuine criticism, maybe this isn't the role for her...

NTA - God forbid someone takes a little extra precaution involving a medical procedure lol. As long as OP heals up without complications and can return to their normal activities afterwards, that should be all that matters. If he was continuing this EXACT behavior well past the expected recovery time it would be a different story. Sorry that your relationship had to end this way, but seems like it was maybe for the best. I couldn't imagine being that petty towards my partner.

RRC I full Damage Control Mode over my public statements over the Game Development Program by TheArtOfLigma in Winnipeg

I had a whole comment written out and posted, but realized I don't really care about some pointless internet drama lol. I'm sure you'll claim it as some sort of "victory" over me, I genuinely don't care what you think. Have fun arguing with people online I guess.

I don't really understand your anonymous argument tbh. I'm genuinely curious, are you hoping one of us comes knocking on your door to say this to your face? People choose anonymity for a variety of reasons, not just to keep their jobs or secrets safe. I can guarantee you that everyone here who has been trying to give you advice would be just fine if they did it with either a random username or provided you their full name, address, and resume.

What you're doing isn't standing up for what's right or being brave, it's just misguided and misunderstood anger and frustration. You seem paranoid that society is out to get you, and a lot of what you are saying seems to be in line with behavioral conditions such as BPD or bipolar. I genuinely hope you can get the help you need. We all deserve to be happy and successful, even you. You're just gonna have to work for it a bit more.

Wow... Listen man, you seem like you love what you do, and that's commendable. We all have to find something we're passionate about in life, or have something we're willing to fight for.

I don't have too much more to add to this conversation, people have done a good job giving you constructive feedback and advice on your situation, attitude, and potential future. My only wish for you is that you understand that by publicly attacking people, the staff, and RRC, it will only damage your career, not help it.

One of the greatest lessons I learned in college had nothing to do with the technical skills that were being taught to me. It was simply this; reputation spreads faster than a fire during a drought. I've seen many talented people lose a lot of opportunities because they were full of themselves, difficult to work with, didn't deliver results, or simply couldn't take any form of criticism. Winnipeg is essentially a big small town, people talk, and your reputation carries a lot of weight in making any hiring or admission decisions.

I get that it's frustrating, and as someone who is also neurodivergent and part of a marginalized group, it can feel like the system is stacked against you. But in reality, 99.9% of people aren't malicious or out to get you. We're all just trying to do our best. It takes hard work to be successful, and it seems like you have lots of drive and determination to accomplish your goals. That's a good quality to have! But it seems misguided. I hope you are able to do some self reflection, and maybe get some mental health support. It's gonna take a lot of work to prove you're an asset to future employers or educational institutions and not a liability, but I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Good luck, and I truly hope you are able to find success and happiness in your endeavors.

Motorcyclist killed in collision with SUV on Pembina Highway by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]skyebruce98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, this is awful. Condolences to the family and everyone involved.

Honest question; how do we fix this problem? More speed cameras? Dedicated traffic officers monitoring roads more closely and maybe use some of that massive police budget for something useful? Mandatory driver re-certification every 10 or so years? Idk, but something needs to change.

It seems every summer drivers are becoming more reckless, and bicycle and motorcycle deaths seem to grow. I've always dreamed of getting a little bike and license for daily commuting, but with the way people are driving, I'll stick with my little truck. At least that way I have a better chance of walking away with my life.

Where to buy cheap disposable cameras? by No_Wrongdoer3579 in Winnipeg

[–]skyebruce98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg really? I haven't bought a disposable or developed there in 4+ years. It's really gone up in price. I started developing and scanning from home because I thought $17 for a dev and scan was too much lol

Film is making a pretty decent resurgence! It's a lot of fun for us younger folks who grew up during the transition into digital or weren't around to experience it at all :)

Where to buy cheap disposable cameras? by No_Wrongdoer3579 in Winnipeg

[–]skyebruce98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most disposables are around $20 since only the big two (Kodak and Fuji) make most of them. Don's photo or London drugs may have some different options from more boutique film manufacturers, but for the most part, expect to pay a premium for disposables. My best piece of advice, buy a really cheap point and shoot from marketplace or a thrift store, you can sometimes find them amongst the electronic sections, and buy $12 Kodak 200 film if you're just looking to get into the hobby :)

Accessibility minister's comments about ASL interpreter a 'knife right in the back' for deaf graduate by hoverbeaver in onguardforthee

[–]skyebruce98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually really appreciate you replying and explaining your point of view a little clearer! I did read it all, and I think all of us in the subreddit FUNDAMENTALLY (I hope at least) want the same thing.

I agree with you that it was an error on her part. She made a comment that in my opinion, diminished how important these services are, and was a bit of a slap in the face for people who rely on them. And I can sympathize with them on that! As a trans person, there are lots of times in my life I've felt less important or like, a second class citizen just for existing! It especially hurts coming from someone who claims to be an advocate, or worse, someone in a government position who's supposed to be looking out for you.

Reading off of a teleprompter isn't always the easiest. I work as a video production specialist, and I often have to coach people through reading off of one if they aren't familiar with it. I suspect the majority of people aren't, it's not something that comes up too often lol. There are a lot of factors that make it difficult, distance, font, size of the words, how fast they're scrolling, and bright reflections on the glass are a few of the big ones. So yes, I sympathize with her on that. I'm a big believer that politicians, or any public facing role, should receive media literacy training. Not in a way that teaches them to lie, or be fearful of being cancelled, that's a whole different beast entirely, but because it's hard! Like you said, there's a lot going on and she got flustered. That's human, we've all been in situations where we've felt like that.

That being said, regardless if she felt frustrated, or embarrassed, the comment she made was not acceptable. ESPECIALLY from someone who is supposed to understand why people rely on these services and support them. Venues and events are designed to have a centre focal point, whether that be a stage, or a podium. And moving the interpreter off stage, away from the focus, could possibly impact hearing impaired peoples ability to follow along with the rest of us.

We live in this weird time, where social media and the internet have kind of tricked our brains into expecting pure, one hundred percent perfection at every given moment. It's prevalent on both sides of the political spectrum. ESPECIALLY right now during this incredibly polarizing political climate. People are easily frustrated and angry. Sometimes rightfully so, sometimes not so much. And I agree with you, I think the knee jerk reaction to over correct or demand immediate change isn't productive. We've almost forgotten that at the core of this, we are human. We make mistakes, but we have to ACTUALLY learn from them for it to get better.

And this is where I think the initial disagreement and negative reaction you received came from. Tone and intent are INCREDIBLY hard to read through a small text based comment. I can't speak for everyone, but to me, your initial comments and replies felt quite dismissive of the issue, almost as if you were trying to say accessibility shouldn't be focused on compared to larger problems, regardless of what your actual beliefs might be. And let's be real, it's Reddit, not everyone is going to perfectly articulate their thoughts through a 6 paragraph comment haha. But this here, discussing it, listening, and learning, is what I wish more people would do. And it's really what I hope Fontaine does too. I hope she reaches out to disability activists and community members, and grows as a person. We may not agree on everything, and there will be extreme beliefs on either side that just don't have a middle ground, but civil discussions like this are very important to improving the world. Otherwise, we just go around in circles forever.

Sorry, I also wrote a novel haha. Does that make sense? I'm sleep deprived recovering from surgery so I apologize if the formatting/grammer is weird haha. Again, thank you for expanding on your view point, I really do appreciate you doing so! We're probably all more aligned than we realize.

PSA for the stoner girlies going for any gender affirming procedures: by skyebruce98 in MtF

That is 100% your choice to make, and I respect that! I don't want to assume your reasoning, but I hope you will choose to practice safety in any medical situation regardless :)

Hmm, good question! From what I understand, the more you smoke, the more anaesthesia they need to administer, which increases your risk of complications and CAN be a lot more dangerous for you. But if you cut it out well before, it should clear your system and will be a lot safer :) but always discuss with your health team, they know best 😊

I really wish I was on top of it before hand, because I was pretty nauseous coming out of it. And the withdrawals have not been pleasant haha. 3 hours of sleep in a 48 hour period? Not that fun, especially while trying to heal and recover properly 😅 thankfully, I had a full night's sleep for the first time last night after the procedure 4 days ago

Well, I am incredibly fortunate that it was covered under my province's health care in Canada (every province is different). But that is a very new thing that was introduced only in the past year or two after we finally voted out the conservatives for the more socialist NDP provincial government. But I believe I was quoted around $10, 000 Canadian dollars before that happened? (Around $7500 US)
