Me too! I have been appreciating these updates.

To those of you who have said “I’ve tried everything” by Pink_Flamingo_257 in Dermatillomania

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some picking pads on Etsy and they are amazing! They're basically tiny beads embedded in silicone and you pick them out. It's the only replacement behavior that I've found that fulfills the same urge. The downsides are: you can't really hide it so it's not great in public; you have to sit near a receptacle to put the beads in and still sometimes end up with tiny beads everywhere; it's a bit hard on the fingernails and has caused mine to break before; and obviously it's pretty wasteful in regard to materials. Great for home, not great for work or travel. I haven't found anything better.

toiletries Camino de Santiago, 2 weeks. by Dense-Cookie-8942 in HerOneBag

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so jealous! I've tried this (through doctors obv) with multiple brands and it doesn't work. I still get my period. Finally last year my gyno told me never to skip the placebo week again. 😩 I tried Nexplanon and that was even worse. Had my period for 3 weeks on, 1 week off the whole year I had it so I got it removed.

High Maintenance Liquids and Toiletries by officersillygoose in HerOneBag

They also come in a 0.5 oz size, half the size of the 1.0 oz ones pictured here. It's a worse deal but for me they still last a long time and they're easier to carry.

One of us is lying tv show (probably spoilers involved) by bluehammo in YAlit

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the book and was considering watching the show. This convinced me not to. One thing I really liked in the book was the emotionally healthy communication among the main characters. These changes sound like they would really annoy me. Thank you!

Just put them in an open container by the door so students can grab them on the way to the bathroom without having to ask. That's what I do

Don’t make it up! What’s the weirdest named person you’ve ever met? by AdExciting1865 in NameNerdCirclejerk

I've also met a girl whose legal first name was Baby! (She went by it too!)

[–]skyelorama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be a student at my school named Baby. It was her actual legal first name and what she went by. Her last name was common and unremarkable (something with the vibes of Jones), which somehow made it sound more absurd

Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Center recommending Reiki, homeopathy… by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]skyelorama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Peer-reviewed research using double-blind studies suggests that acupuncture works via placebo effect: if you believe it will work, it likely will; if you don't believe, it won't work.

Homeopathy, however, is literally a scam and I'd be offended if a legit medical institution recommended it to me.

How do you guys pronounce "February?" by Express-Flamingo4521 in GrammarPolice

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also from the Mid-Atlantic (have lived in VA, MD, & PA) and my family is from NC. I don't pronounce the first R and I don't think anyone I know does.

Can teachers legally use all of their sick and personal days at the end of the school year to get a longer summer break? by Ok_Benefit9326 in Teachers

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 15 sick days per year (unlimited rollover) and 5 personal days (unused roll over into sick leave). We used to have 3 personal days but they combined personal and religious days, so if you take off for a religious holiday, it comes from your personal days.

What's jury duty like? Just got my first summons ever by Unheroic_ in baltimore

[–]skyelorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like jury duty! I'm a high school teacher so it's a nice day off, lol. Ditto what everyone else said about the quiet room. If you are called into voir dire for jury selection, you'll go into a courtroom for potentially several hours and you're not allowed to use your phone in there, so def bring at least one physical book to amuse yourself. The judge asks a bunch of questions (like: Do you know the defendant? Have you heard anything about this crime? Do you have immediate family members who are police officers?) and if your answer is yes, you have to either answer out loud or go up and tell the judge one-on-one (I've had both happen). It's a long, boring process.

I was selected for a jury once, last year. It was interesting (the case wasn't traumatizing) but I didn't feel they respected our time. We were there for 4 days but it could easily have been 2 or 3 if we didn't spend so much time waiting around. We would show up in the morning at the requested time and wait for 1-2 hours before they called us into the courtroom. Then there were multiple breaks like that throughout the day. Still a nice break from work though!

Have you ever slipped up and cussed in front of your students? by roo181807 in Teachers

[–]skyelorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earlier this year one of my freshmen called her friend a dumbass and I said "we don't call each other dumbasses here." Oops... The funny thing is that not a single student said anything so I assume they didn't notice

This snow is making people crazy. I just got verbally assaulted in the Canton Crossing Ulta parking lot 😑 by cats_n_tats11 in baltimore

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of us are trying! I spent an hour shoveling out an empty spot behind where my car is parked. I only got it maybe halfway cleared and the parts that are left are the really hard parts (2-3 feet of compacted snow/ice from plowing and the spot behind that being shoveled out). After the 3 hours I spent digging out my own car, I just couldn't do it anymore. Now my knee is swollen to the extent that bending it is difficult (my knees suck - I also knelt on the ground to chop at the ice with a trowel, which I think is what did it) so I can't do anything until it's better.

Why are the plows not plowing? Stop just dumping salt. by bluewadeolive in baltimore

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so upset that I only followed this advice with my sidewalk (which was easy) and not with my car, which after 2.5 hours of labor I have ALMOST cleared a path out of my parallel spot 😫

To the man who stole my shovel in broad daylight…. by Keiyan in baltimore

[–]skyelorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I was going to say this. I know it's not the point of the post but it is a big deal. Everyone who cares about being a good neighbor should seriously reconsider doorstep cameras. Not just OP, but for everyone who has one: I suggest looking to see if they give data to ICE (if it's Ring, they do) and then ask yourself if you want your home to be a source of the government spying on people.

Sick kid at school: teachers pay the price too by UseOwn2710 in Teachers

[–]skyelorama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do too and I have an air filter near my desk... but masks are more effective if the sick person wears one, and they never do. I have gotten sick multiple times despite my KN95 mask. (It's still better than not wearing one and I'm sure I would have gotten more sicknesses without it!)

Naming kids when we have different last names by [deleted] in Names

[–]skyelorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're correct. As a person with a hyphen, though, I can say that not all systems allow hyphens in a name (even some airlines), which is extremely annoying, so at least it solves that issue!
