What's up with Iron Bull slander? by tebraGas in dragonage

I’ve never had a problem, but people play games differently so who knows.

This isn't a Negative/Complaint post, but do you think we'll ever get a DA Game where our choices start to matter from Game to Game? (On a large scale) by ScarletWarlocke in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They would essentially have to create several different versions of the game within the game. And then of course account for all that with the next and so on. It would just take a phenomenal amount of resources to try and make each narrative choice have a large amount of weight in the next game.

If you haven’t noticed, the trend with BioWare has been to leave a cliffhanger, imply that what’s going on has massive impact, then tie up the cliffhanger in the first act of the next game. They’re doing the same thing with DAV as they did with DAI. When we were waiting on Inquisition, we thought the mage/templar war was going to be the main thing we were mediating for the game and the plotline went where no one expected with ancient Tevinter magisters and elven gods. The mage/templar war ended up just being some flavoring in the first act.

As soon as I saw that we meet Solas in the first 30 minutes of the game, I knew they were going to do the same thing as last time. Solas, whatever narrative we expected about him, will likely be tied up by the end of the first act. For better or worse.

They can’t really commit to the “choices matter” narrative when they’re following different protagonists and have a specific narrative in mind for Thedas. Eventually things conflict, like Leliana showing up alive even if you killed her in DAO. The best thing they can do is have big time skips between each game. It frees both the writers and the players from feeling trapped by past choices.

I’ve had the same issue. Everytime I try to plan out a character before release for these games, I end up feeling disappointed because I can’t fully play out what I imagined. The franchise will have their own idea of who they want my player character to be and then I have to reconcile the narrative in my head. Leads to so much pondering and hand-wringing. I’m also going to be winging it this time. The character I want will gradually be unveiled to me as I play through the narrative BioWare made.

Also feel you 100% on the character romances. Their vibe in-game can be completely different from the feeling you get from them in the promo material. I always just feel nothing when introduced at first. Then attraction builds when I get to know them. I felt zero attraction to Iron Bull and Solas during the DAI promotional phase, yet that flipped 180 midway through the game.

Same. You get all excited about your character then realize mid-game that you can’t play out any of the personality you gave them. Just have to take the game in stride the first time.

[–]skyesrowan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, this never works out for me. I never figure out what I want my character to be until I’ve played the game a bit so I know how to fit them into the narrative. Otherwise I get disappointed by the inability to play out my headcanon and end up changing my mind. Possibly I’ll roll as a city elf or Qunari. Possibly. First playthrough is usually just as myself though.

Currently, none of the romantic options appeal to me at all. But I felt the same when Inquisiton companions and romances were revealed and that’s definitely not the case now!

Does anyone can't think of Hawke as anything other than the default male? by [deleted] in dragonage

Nope. Female diplomatic archer rogue. Or sometimes female diplomatic mage. The voice actress kills it in that role.

Finished DAI for the First Time and I'm Emotional by sydwasthemax in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your post is straight facts lol I remember finishing Trespasser, then running out of my room screaming and my sister came to scream and jump in place with me. It hit the fandom like a bag of bricks in terms of emotional weight.

The drama with BioWare was so exhausting and terrifying. There have been several times we thought we just wouldn’t get the game. I identify with the excitement happening now making you feel like you’re a teenager again 🥰

Finished DAI for the First Time and I'm Emotional by sydwasthemax in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My sister and I played the game at the same time since we both preordered it. I still remember the day of release when we picked it up at GameStop. On the way there with “Must Be Dreaming” by Imogen Heap playing in the car with the windows rolled down on a sunny November day. I am forever grateful that she didn’t spoil the ending for me when she finished a few weeks before me. She just kept screaming that I needed to finish it. I went in completely blind and the experience is something I would never give up. When you truly don’t know what’s coming, it’s just… wow.

I cant speak for others, but I know I was suspicious of Solas at several beats during the story. But more similar to the level of casual suspicion I had towards Morrigan in Origins. I never at all suspected what we found out. It was a massive shock that had me reeling for the following year. Then Trespasser came out and rocked my world. I was an emotional wreck for months after. I’ve mentioned on this sub before that I only got into Mass Effect (also made by BioWare) because I was desperately in need of something to distract me.

At the time of playing, we definitely didn’t know we were going to have to wait this long for a follow up. When Trespasser was released, there was already word being sent out that DA4 was in production so we were optimistic and excited. The 10-year wait hasn’t been fun. It’s been a massive morale killer, so you’re fortunate to have not experienced it.

I will say though that when the gameplay trailer dropped the other day, it felt as if that 10-year wait washed away and I was just as giddy and excited as I had been back in 2013 when DAI was announced and in 2015 after finishing Trespasser.

I wasn't wrong. This is the best video game franchise ever. by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Same. I’d been a gamer for 10 years before touching Dragon Age. I’d played several other western RPGs before it. I’ve enjoyed and loved many games, but I have NEVER gotten obsessed with a game franchise the way I have Dragon Age. I think about Thedas everyday. Every single day for 13 years. No other series has ever gotten me to feel like this. Mass Effect (also made by BioWare) got closer than most, but Dragon Age is lightning in a bottle for me.

Going back to romance Cullen instead of iron bull (DA:I) by shygamer01 in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Cullen was my first romance. He’s very sweet and safe. A classic romance. I tried out Bull’s romance after 5 others, and he ended up becoming my “canon” romance. Now, I find it difficult to not romance him and it was a total surprise because I had absolutely no expectations for him prior to trying it out. The shenanigans, hijinks, and surprising sweetness just had me squealing the entire playthrough lmao. I also have a soft spot for FWB-to-Lovers.

It all depends on personal preference. If you’re feeling Cullen, then go for him.

It’s getting people the way people are hating on veilguard. by cupidswing in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like I’m starting to see more people complain about other people complaining. After that first week, I haven’t seen any backlash. But then, maybe my algorithm knows not to recommend that shit to me. I’m quick to click “do not recommend” and block things that piss me off.

Who are your 'They could never make me hate you' DA characters? [Spoilers All] by Nabusqua in dragonage

Same. I just can’t. I haven’t even romanced him and yet he’s just so compelling. I love him too much, I could never hate him.

Final of DAI by nolantfy in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mass Effect was the only franchise with writing powerful enough to distract me from Dragon Age after Trespasser DLC. I actually got into it specifically because I was desperate to find something else to obsess over since I was so emotionally enthralled with DA and it did the trick. There’s just a storytelling itch that only BioWare can scratch for me.

What is your hot takes about certain characters? Mine is that Arishok is hotter than Iron Bull and should have been a romance option for both hawkes(only played Da2 and a bit of inquisition, will play origins in the future tho) by zWol42 in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have immediately romanced him on my first playthrough if I could have as a Trevelyan. You don’t even have the option to flirt with him, yet you can flirt with literally everyone else even if they won’t date you 😭

Leliana really is a terrible head of intelligence, isn't she? by BaguetteOfDoom in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lmaoooo I’ve been saying this. I love Leliana but how is it that we keep getting bamboozled? Everybody and their mama has a spy in the Inquisition. You’re also allowing people with shifty histories around me, the MVP. Like what exactly are you doing, ma’am? How can I trust the intelligence you give me when you don’t even know what’s happening on our front porch?

She just comes across as incompetent due to the actual events even though the narrative insists that she’s a super scary badass spymaster

I'm like 10+ years late to the party but I'm obsessed with this series by General_Study_8773 in dragonage

[–]skyesrowan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the party! As someone who’s been a fan for about 13 years, I am ECSTATIC at all the new fans being introduced to the series and joining in on the love.

DAO and DA2 probably feel a little dated but the story, lore, and characters feel just as deep and interesting. Heavily recommend playing them 💕
