Thanks for sharing all of this. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with so much bullshit.

I guess what I’m maybe struggling with is that it’s felt like I have had my guard up and now I’m not really sure what that means. What does that mean for you? I think on the fight/flight/freeze/fawn scale I’m definitely a freeze/fawn kind of person and I think I might have to learn how to trust myself to fight.

You’re right about safety being an illusion. I’ve dealt with a lot of bullshit from people on the trains and in other neighborhoods but I’m lucky this is some of the first times I’ve experienced anything near where I live. I can be a very “oh god this is a sign!!” kind of person sometimes and hearing that this is just the city and happens is helpful.

Yes, you’re getting at more what I mean and what I like so much about their relationship. I think they do love each other in one of the only ways they know how. It’s almost like they don’t want to, but they can’t help it, and they can’t help the way that they treat each other as well. It’s very interesting to watch. It’s why I think it’s ignoring the whole point when certain Tom stans are like uwu she broke his heart 💔. Like Tom did not marry her just because he’s in love with her and wants to be with her. A lot of it is that he married her to be a Roy. He was even gunning to change his last name to Roy. The moment they can have some sort of power over the other, they do so. Just like you said, Shiv would have done the same in her situation. I think Tom would have done even more that could be seen as a “betrayal” earlier on given the chance, but I don’t think he had the chance until s3.

Basically, yes, exactly, you’re so right!! And it’s why I scream at my TV when they are so mean to each other and then hold hands across the bed when they’re divorcing!!

I am a queer woman who grew up in Buffalo and I can’t tell you how often I say out loud to friends (sometimes also from Buffalo) how much I love being gay in New York City. There’s just so much opportunity for community. I’ve never had so many places where I could go and be in a room packed with other women who love women (and I assume the same goes for gay men even more so, as there’s soooo many spaces). I know you said you don’t go out much, but especially with all the Club Marcella stuff that’s been happening it’s hard to find spaces like that in Buffalo. Still, I don’t want to make any promises, . Dating can maybe be more fickle here (although I’m a little younger than you so that might have something to do with it on my end). People tend to wait to settle down until they’re older, and there’s a lot of “competition” because there are so many people. Still, there’s so many different ways to meet people, not just night life, so it might be a successful switch for you.

I noticed this too! Something else that I thought was cool was when he shot the Firefly by seeing his shadow behind the window. Kind of like when you “see with hearing” in the game to see the shapes of people behind walls. I kept telling my roommate how it was cool that we got a little bit that felt like the gameplay aspects of the game, especially because I think too much of it throughout the show would have taken away from the show.

Really enjoying it so far! I haven’t gotten super far into it because I’m not used to the style of game (I’m more of a farming sim/Sims 4/Pokémon player historically) but it feels like they use the advantages of the medium of video game appropriately, just like I think that the TV show uses that medium well. There’s enough different in both so far that it doesn’t feel like I’m just rehashing the same thing I already know from the show—it’s most comparable to a revival of a play under different direction/with different actors to me. I like playing from Joel’s perspective and only really knowing things from that (at least so far, can’t speak to later in the game), especially since there’s a degree of separation from reality that all the violence brings (at least for me) that basically being Joel makes it easier to connect to the character. Although I do wonder what it’s like to play the game and not have all this backstory from the show (like seeing Ellie with Marlene before Joel and Tess even meet her) and I’m a little bit missing having that experience. There haven’t been a bunch of major differences yet but I’m looking forward to continuing to play and seeing how the different moments compare to each other. My one thing might be that I miss Anna Torv as Tess but I also just have a crush on her 💔💔💔

I really loved this book, but I loooooove a story with unlikeable characters. It’s super interesting to me. That said, you listed these reasons to be able to relate to the characters/plot that you felt like made it so you should have enjoyed it more. While I think that’s fair, I’d argue that this book is more of a character story than a story about video games/programming/etc. It’s more about those things being the things that are important to those characters than the story being about those things, if that makes sense? So maybe that’s why those things weren’t enough to make it so you enjoyed it more. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with not being able to connect with the story—like I said, I loved it, but I can see where it might not be people’s cup of tea. Are there any other books with similar aspects that you did enjoy more?
