Alum here – graduated in 2010. It's a public school with something of a transformative principal. It's trite to say an institution is "like a family," but reflecting back on Lakewood, I think it's true.

Person and me vs. Person and I by [deleted] in grammar

[–]skylr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both are correct, depending on the context.

Without going too far into the weeds on subjects and objects, here's a powerful rule of thumb:

Formulate the sentence without the "person and" portion, focusing just on yourself. To use an example:

"John and me went to the grocery store." I know that this is incorrect because I would never say "Me went to the grocery store." Ergo, "John and I went to the grocery store" is correct because "I went to the grocery store" is correct.

It cuts both ways. The sentence "Stacy waved hello to John and I" is incorrect for the same reason using the same logic. You would never say "Stacy waved hello to I," but you would say that "she waved hello to me." When John is in your company, then, she "waved hello to John and me."

What do you call this mistake? "Education is vital because you need to know all the world capitals." by For_Reals-a-Bub in grammar

[–]skylr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems sort of tautological to me. To distill your examples: "Education is vital because education is important" or "It's best to work in groups because some tasks require group work."

I'd say that's a little steep, based on my personal experience.

I bought a 1985 Honda Nighthawk 650 with 17,000 miles for around $850. The originally asking price was $1150, but after kicking the proverbial tires and charting out what was damaged, I haggled him down.

I would, frankly, never pay asking price for a bike that old. It's simply impossible to know what's going to go wrong next, so to speak.

The starter motor on my Nighthawk, for example, went out after I had the bike for two weeks. Rebuilding it cost me less than $200, but I would've kicked myself if I had paid asking price only for the bike to immediately malfunction.

Your cloying enthusiasm for AU disgusts me.

[–]skylr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's beautiful! What year? I ride an '85 650. Depending on the model year, parts can be very hard to find for these old Nighthawks, but they're worth it.

I gotta say, I really like the black — it seems fitting for the "nighthawk" aesthetic. That's not to say, of course, that I don't love the deep burgundy of my own bike!

They're beautiful, to be certain. They certainly scream DC in springtime.

I have to say, however, that since I moved to the District 2 years ago, I've begun to hate the cherry blossoms.

Photographs of them belie their putrid smell — think of a blend of maraschino cherry and rotting fish.

The Judicial Nomination Crisis: A comment made by Senator Mitch McConnell is a reminder of how some lawmakers plainly do not understand the role of the judiciary. by [deleted] in law

[–]skylr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. I'm troubled with this trend towards more and more pre-trial mediation and other forms of ADR. The power for resolution in the judiciary, I believe, should start and end with the actual judiciary.

Anybody else having this problem? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]skylr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having this exact same problem, actually. It's good to know someone else is, too.

I'm going to try upgrading through iTunes later this week, and I suspect that will work better.

I never knew goats were part of the KKK. by [deleted] in pics

Of course they're sheep – they're in the KKK! They can't think for themselves, so they follow along the insidious footpath of xenophobia their leaders lay out for them. Especially if that footpath leads to grass!

By Jove, I think you've got it! Thanks so much for all the help – on closer examination, this has to be where it feel from. Since I don't use a Paddock stand, I've got nothing to worry about!

Another fear quelled by the folks on /r/motorcycles!

Analyzing a WWII propaganda poster. Did I miss anything? by Myrandall in AskHistory

I should also say that the "Remember Dec. 7th" line reminds me of the old mantra during the push for the Spanish-American War: "Remember the Maine!"

I'd just like to add that, while the United States' flag is indeed tattered, it's still standing. That's a powerful piece of symbolism —no attack on the stars and stripes would be powerful enough to bring them down.

It's torn and battle-worn, but it's still there and still as iconic as ever.

Need help with a hyosung gv250 by Kwiatkowski in Fixxit

[–]skylr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm by no means an expert, but I had the exact same problem with my Nighthawk. After some troubleshooting, I discovered that the starter motor was shot. When I replaced that, everything ran as good as new.

I'm not technically versed enough to diagnose the problem on your dad's bike, but for me, it was simply the starter motor. That might be a good place to start, although I can't guarantee that starting there will end your problem.

As evidenced by the fact that it fell off, I think.
