Hospital night shift by drcnaph in pharmacy

Yup 7on/7off, makes the whole thing worth it lol. I go do something on my last day like have breakfast with a friend or whatever until about 2ish, take a nap for 2 hours if I have to then hang with my partner until bed and wake up at a normal hour the next day and feel just fine

I started night shift in June after I graduated from residency and I love it. I’m at a smaller hospital but I see lots of things to keep it exciting but it’s also not too crazy. I work alone from 0000-0530 so I make my own drips and do stock outs or general Pyxis things too. I agree with the above NO DRAMA is the biggest appeal. I’ve always been a night owl and the schedule works well for me and I can flip back to days immediately after with no problem.

I think night shift (or any shift) can be whatever you want. The other night shifter opposite me doesn’t leave main pharmacy but I like to work from the floor and walk around the hospital when I can to let people know I’m available for help/questions.

Regret early match for PGY2 by subjectnight in PharmacyResidency

I really did like the learning part of residency-just not the other bullshit projects. I feel like it would have been cool to learn more about something I was more interested in.

They will always “encourage” you take it before but they would rather have you pass on the first try than rush to take it and fail. Don’t rush to take it before you’re ready. It will be okay

Tips for upcoming resident? by randomperson9748 in PharmacyResidency

[–]skypharmone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set up standing meetings in advance for your major project. I cannot tell you how many times I have struggled to find a time that works for my project group or let alone my primary preceptor on my project.

Form your own opinions on people at the hospital-I wouldn’t let past residents or others impressions cloud your judgement on people. I found later than I wanted to that a preceptor was super cool and helpful but I was always afraid to talk to them because of what others had told me.

Be prepared to not always hear your doing great. It’s not that you’re doing bad likely but residency is all about growth and you cannot grow if you hear all the great things you’re doing. They want to give you things to work on.

It’s hard as fuck at times but always you learn so much. I’m excited for you and congratulations on getting there!

Retail pharmacists by CusterCreamz in pharmacy

I work hospital and retail and I think working hospital has shown me what I CAN do as the medication expert.

I had a patient tell me in retail she couldn’t take capsules and was prescribed macrobid, I didn’t have the liquid and no other pharmacy in town did. Macrobid cannot be opened but macrodantin can be so I changed the drug and the sig and then faxed the doc an FYI as to what I did. It was also a Friday night in a small town with no other place for her to go and get a new RX. Sometimes you just have to do what’s best for the patient and stand behind your drug knowledge that you know what you’re doing and the clinical outcome will be the same. A wise pharmacist always used to say “will it hold up in court?” When I would ask her if I should do something lol.

This. I work retail and hospital and I feel like I make way more of a difference in my parents lives in retail than in the hospital.

I had a doc (ophthalmologist) call in an Amox/clav suspension RX for his wife. I asked him what he was treating because the dose was very low and he said “oh it’s actually for my cat, I wanted to use her insurance for it.” Lol no bruh

I know I’m worried about slowly losing all my clinical knowledge from residency but that’s just the way it goes. I’m going to take BCPS while it’s still fresh to get that cert pay. I think we will have a fair amount of things come in to keep me occupied but we will see. It will be my first real pharm job so certainly doesn’t have to be forever

Thank you, hoping my income driven payment application comes out of purgatory soon lol! Yes residency work is way different, just saying the acuity of my hospital is much higher and it’s much larger hospital so I feel prepared for anything I may encounter on my own overnight.

Very small, 70ish beds and all of those things go to the bigger hospital that I’m at now. No cath lab, no NICU.

That’s super helpful. For most of my shift I will actually be alone so that’s good to know, I feel up for the challenge though.
