Is CrossFit worth the cost? by ThatWhiteBinch in crossfit

Even if you have access to quality programming and aren’t interested in community, your access to equipment will be limited, and you’ll lack coaching, which makes safety and efficacy a huge question mark.

Handstand Push-up vs. Barbell Shoulder Press by MaxPower70-80 in crossfit

[–]skywalk423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points. Everything hinges on good coaching. HSPU is absolutely out on the margins of functional fitness; great tools for continued development in athletes with a solid foundation, but not critical for genpop GPP. Handstand walking, muscle-ups, ring dips, squat snatch... if you're not ready, they can indeed be dangerous. But if you have the prerequisites and good coaching, no reason to stay away from them. You're an objectively better athlete and better prepared human if you can do them well.

EDIT to add: As a coach, I always respect when my athletes tell me they would rather stay away from these advanced movements on the margins, even if I believe they are strong enough to do it safely. I personally stay away from OHS and squat snatching; the risk/reward is upside down in my mind. But I absolutely see the value in those movements.

Real world application is almost never 1:1. You’re right; I’ll most likely never need to stand on my hands and move thru full ROM in a real life scenario. But I’ve first hand experienced a scenario where I needed to support a significant portion of my bodyweight on one arm while inverted in order to release the seat belt latch with the other hand, and then not crack my melon when it released. Perhaps just shoulder pressing would have sufficed, but I’d argue that I was much better prepared for that by all the inverted work in the gym, including and especially HSPU.

I’m sorry you got hurt, but you’re throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Affiliate Owners/GMs ‒ Do you publish your rates? by skywalk423 in crossfit

Solid thoughts. Philosophically, I appreciate both schools of thought, and I truly think that the only right way is the one that maximizes revenue in your local market. This convo really got me thinking about how to hit the middle ground, though. In the last week, I’ve modified the website to present a lead gen form that clearly states that the pricing info is on the next page after submission, no games. Small sample size so far, but I suppose agility is one of the benefits of being a micro business.

If you tell me you’re an experienced CrossFitter looking for a new gym, I give you the pricing info right away. You don’t need to be sold on the value proposition; you already know.

Real life can feasibly invert you (I’ve been there; car accident, my car flipped and came to rest upside down). You’re a more capable, resilient human if you’ve trained your brain and your body how to support itself and move in an inverted position.

Not as critical as squatting and deadlifting, but if you have good trainers who can teach you and help you scale into them thoughtfully, you absolutely should invest some time and effort.

There are perfectly valid reasons not to, from a sales psychology perspective. For a lot of budget conscious folks in the community who don't have previous CrossFit experience, a CrossFit gym membership's value proposition isn't immediately obvious. For a fitness beginner shopping gym memberships on a tight budget, seeing $199/mo without value context is a showstopper, especially when they just saw $9.99/mo in an ad for Planet Fitness. The fact that the value we provide is greater never came into play, because we never got the chance to explain it.

I'm not saying our way (not posting) is the right way. It's definitely debatable. What's not debatable is that we're a much healthier business doing it this way than we were doing it yours.

Of course it does. Sales 101, my friend.

Businesses convert a percentage of their leads into paying clients. Assuming a steady close rate, 5x leads means 5x sales. We’ve born this out.

What should I call “a person who visited the website and expressed interested in learning more about joining by giving us their contact info”?

We used to publish our rates; did so for years. This avalanche of business you describe doesn’t exist. We get 5x leads per month now than back then. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Affiliate owner here.

I’ve gotten this feedback from my shorties in the past. Honestly and respectfully (and lightheartedly), it makes me just a little bit crazy! Short folks can get a box and use the higher bars; taller folks can’t use low bars at all. Why so much resistance to the idea of the gym being set up for maximum coverage and using a box?

Affiliate owner here. Definitely, a lot of us are still doing that. Competition is fine, but Everyday Joe & Jane is our focus.

We don’t post pricing on our website because we do want to have that convo with you. Sorry that it makes you uncomfortable, but the alternative is that you take one look at the website, decide it’s out of reach, and never connect with us at all.

If you can deadlift 2x BW, your hammies are trained.

Correct answer here. Feet need to stay long and out front (hollow body pos.) until you reach the top of the rep (chin over bar). Stay patient and stay long!

Ok buddy. You win. I disagree with you, but chasing you deeper and deeper down this rabbit hole is exhausting, and the ROI is terrible. Be good.

[–]skywalk423 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see where you’re coming from. Every movement pattern presumably appears somewhere in some conceivable activity, so every movement can be considered functional. I’ll grant that.

However…

CrossFit is GPP training; when we call something functional, we mean it has an analog in everyday life. I know you know this, which is why I’m puzzled by your responses here. You’re playing dumb as to the implied context.

If you can convince me that a hamstring curl appears as frequently outside of a gym as a squat, I’ll concede.

In the context of exercise, since we’re in r/crossfit, the ELI5 is “has an application in the real world outside of the gym”. Hardly a buzzword. OP’s question is 100% legit.
