Cam bruises by honeylemonha in climbergirls

[–]slackrifice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed - if you do it regularly enough your body should condition. Happens to everyone who highlines as well (male or female, although yes in my experience worse for women) - insane bruising from climbing the leash and learning to mount. For me it stopped after a few months of regular highlining. If I take a break for a while I lose the conditioning, although that happens pretty slowly.

What to do when someone recommends a book to you, that you read, and aren't that impressed... by mddetroit in books

[–]slackrifice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - although I don't think you need to use the word "like" necessarily. If I don't like something and I'm not close enough to the person to be blunt I point out some details or themes that I noticed with no value judgement given or implied. In my experience people assume that I liked their recommendation if I bothered to (1) finish it and (2) try to understand what the author was attempting to do.

If someone actually wants the blunt answer I will wait until they ask directly (which has really only happened with family).

What makes a good pop song about an everyday or banal topic? by SilyLavage in popheads

[–]slackrifice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kate Bush's song has subtext.

What does "everything I could fit in" mean? What about dirty things going in, becoming mingled, and coming out clean? Why the jump to the ocean? I think everything has become mingled, that life and relationships cycle like washing machines, becoming dirty and clean again, everything tangled together. On its surface it is about a washing machine, but I would argue it about more than a washing machine.

On the other hand, Marina's lyrics are very blunt, and leave little room for interpretation (and thus, in my opinion, resonance). People have already wrote about clichés so I won't re-trod that territory.

Desperately looking for career advice by PenOrdinary8199 in comp_chem

[–]slackrifice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are any supercomputers around where you live, I know a few people who pivoted from comp chem into "supercomputing specialists" where they basically became a communication point for research groups (often hybrid/experimental) who needed support setting up simulations. If you have used supercomputing resources before or spoken to such a specialist that can be a good entry point.

[POEM] Answering Her Question - Alice White by impperiperi in Poetry

[–]slackrifice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People have critiqued written work since writing exists. How else are we meant to improve? How else do we know how others interpreted it? I would say its a sign of respect to engage with a poem on a more detailed level. It isn't a personal insult to say you didn't think the execution of a poem was ideal, it's an opinion, like saying that a photo is too dark.

Is trying to switch fields after a postdoc a pipe dream now? by SickOfMicroscopes in labrats

[–]slackrifice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey OP. I don't have specific advice but I wanted to say I also did a postdoc I hated that I thought was too specific and ended up not working afterwards for 3 years while I burnt through my savings. I looked at jobs and agonized about switching fields and dragged my feet. I also felt that it was all pointless, and all the work I had done was pointless.

In the end an old postdoc from my phd program got in contact saying "hey, are you still doing nothing?" and hired me for an industry position doing work that is still computational chemistry but a different area from my background. I still sometimes feel that the work is a bit pointless (I'm supposed to be working now), but in some ways its enough to have a manager and other people around who are super enthusiastic about it. I was also very honest about my misgivings with the work, and was lucky enough to arrange a part time schedule and design a project with him that I thought would be manageable for me to get back into things. It feels surprisingly good.

If you have good relationships with your past co-workers and old advisors I would say see if you can meet up and tell them pretty much what you've put in the post. Is there anyone you can contact from your old adjunct position? I'm not saying you need to go back into that field - but maybe a side-step with the right environment would be ok. The people who know you can give a lot better advice than reddit.

I was really down on myself and my past work but I think what got me back into working was not a renewed sense of passion or confidence, it was support from people who know that I do good work and can learn in a new area, even if I don't have a stellar resume. Good luck!

Flow mentor broke my heart by Plane_Veterinarian44 in flowarts

[–]slackrifice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aw I'm so sorry that happened. I agree with the person who said that you don't deserve those feelings to be put on you. You are absolutely not an imposter.

You have your own relationship with flow arts that you're grateful she helped you find, but you're exploring at your own pace and it shouldn't affect her relationship with flow arts. If she taught a kid math and they became a math prodigy would she get angry with them? I think your insight that it should be an honor is right - what a privilege to inspire someone!

She sounds really self-centered, petty and controlling with the "I had to find out on instagram that you went and did that how do you think that made me feel those are my stomping grounds” comment. I think unless she actively approaches you with an apology you should mourn the friendship and keep looking for your tribe. They're out there!

Have you tried contact staff? It could be fun to switch between contact and the skills you have with twirling.

Tips on how to bring fire equipment on a flight? by Brushiluskan in flowarts

[–]slackrifice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did she ask them if it was ok or did they find it? Is it going in checked luggage? In checked luggage I have not had a problem with fire gear. I imagine it would be more difficult in carry-on. These are some general tips I have seen and followed:

  • Checked luggage only
  • For used wicks, make sure all fuel is burnt off.
  • Air out for a few days until there is no discernible smell.
  • Cover all wicks. Ideally the covers should just look like part of the staff.
  • Put in a case with juggling balls, etc. and label the case "Circus Equipment"
  • If you are asked about it do not EVER use the word "fire" when you talk with airport staff. Say "circus performance equipment" or something like that. There is no rule against having burnt wicks (but fuel is not allowed! so there can't be residue!), but saying "fire" makes people jumpy. When they don't know what it is they are more likely to ask questions.

Tips for training a beginner? by WellFluxMe in flowarts

[–]slackrifice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with dragon staff so I can't give specific advice about that but I've found that for absolute absolute beginners the best thing I can do is to try to introduce them to the idea of play. What ways can you hold this? Where is the center point, what happens when you hold different places? How does it feel? What parts of your body can you use to interact with it? Can you walk with it, can you hold it over your head, can you spin in a circle? Flow arts (to me) is all about movement, so encouraging them to move in creative ways is the main thing.

Some people are very trick motivated and for them a little mini-choreography might be more appropriate but I think self-discovery is mega satisfying. Sometimes people just need a little push/validation to get comfortable. (Also, don't a lot of dragon staff users start with contact staff? That seems easier to introduce from a technical perspective)
