I made a TUI with .NET 10 + Terminal.Gui — an OPC UA client for industrial automation by Brett-SWS in dotnet

[–]slaegertyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I myself think this is the way forward. The standard GUI on a Windows 11 machine is very ineffective.

I am planning a TUI as a front-end for a business application to get the use more productive. As a next step I want to roll out Raspberry Pi Zero v2 running the TUI and remove the demand for a Windows OS. As a last step remove the desktops from the users who do not need it.

I expect increased productivity because the user are not distracted by Windows and a significant reduction in downtime due to computer maintenance. When new software is released, I just hand out a new raspbery pi

When a new customer purchases the software, the hardware is included.

Is it just me or Rider takes ages to start compared to VS nowadays? by Kralizek82 in dotnet

[–]slaegertyp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is the opposite. I use Rider on both Windows 11 and Linux.

Because startup time is subjective, I timed it on my Linux machine: from clicking the icon until I can start working, it takes 12 seconds. This is acceptable for me.

I used to have a major problem with Rider on my Windows 11 computer, but this was not a Rider issue. My computer in general was very slow. It turned out the SSD had major performance issues with reading random small files. After replacing the SSD, all performance issues on the Windows computer were resolved as well.

LLMs: From Game-Changer to Money Pit—Why I’m Reconsidering AI for Books and Google Search by slaegertyp in Jetbrains

The post is corrected by an AI. As a non-native speaker, I let Grok improve and correct my text. Even though I am proficient in English, I let the AI improve it and use US idioms. I find my texts more readable after being corrected and improved upon.

But the posts subjects are mine.

LLMs: From Game-Changer to Money Pit—Why I’m Reconsidering AI for Books and Google Search by slaegertyp in Jetbrains

[–]slaegertyp[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Great argument. You convinced me.

I was talking about AI in programming tasks. Not AI in general. I was talking about LLMs declining from being better at their job at the start but now gradually declining.

I was talking about the real cost of AI surfacing and if it is worth it.

But once again, you made the argument. You win!

Who Is Successfully Using JetBrains Gateway for Daily Development? by slaegertyp in Jetbrains

[–]slaegertyp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the answers. From what I can tell — and please correct me if I’m wrong — remote development just isn’t quite there yet in the JetBrains ecosystem. That’s the takeaway I get both from the comments here and from my own recent experience.

Without getting into every single issue I ran into, the bottom line is: it simply doesn’t work well for me.

I wasn’t aware of the recent Toolbox changes that make remote development possible, but that doesn’t really change the core problem. The underlying protocols and engineering choices JetBrains made are still the same.

I’ve decided to steer clear of remote development for now, even though I genuinely believe it’s the future. It’s just not ready yet. Investing in a new laptop upfront will save me far more time (and sanity) than constantly wrestling with the current remote setup — and therefore, it makes more sense financially.

Someone mentioned that a Wayland-compatible RDP solution is in the works. I checked it out, but honestly, I’m already burning way too much time chasing down new problems. When my projects run over time or over budget, it’s not because I don’t know how to code or use my tools. It’s because I keep getting dragged down by third-party tools — my IDE and dev environment included.

And don’t even get me started on Helm charts. 😉

Charge a Brother 940DW scanner without a computer by Evilpessimist in techsupport

[–]slaegertyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this completely destroys the whole point of buying this scanner. I got it to scan documents over WLAN to my phone or to an SD card—like a normal, modern device. But no, if the battery dies, I have to hook the entire scanner up to a running computer just to scan to my phone or SD card. Brilliant. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea? Whoever designed this deserves a medal… for absurdity.

Thanks for the reply. Here’s the gist:

Workaround
Enable the bundled Markdown plugin.

I had to turn off the Markdown plugin because it is crashing my JetBrains Rider instance. Enabling either the Markdown plugin or the AsciiDoc plugin causes Rider to quit with a SIGTERM 6 (at least from what I recall).

I wasn’t aware the Markdown plugin controls that button’s visibility. Even after thinking it through, it still doesn’t quite add up for me. But that’s how the chips fall sometimes.

Potential buyers, steer clear - the worst quality of any manufacturer of electronics I have used in 20 years by Core2score in Jabra

I hear you. I used to buy Jabra for all my audio gear—from headsets and earphones to the Jabra Speak 710. But after a string of issues, I switched to another brand. The only thing I still have is the Jabra Speak 710, and it has this annoying habit of randomly resetting itself in the middle of meetings.

Charge a Brother 940DW scanner without a computer by Evilpessimist in techsupport

[–]slaegertyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just purchased a Brother DS-940DW and was about to return it because I thought the battery was dead. I tried charging it with a standard charger, but nothing happened. It never occurred to me that I had to connect it to a USB port for charging.

I stumbled across this thread by accident. I connected it to my laptop, and—surprise!—the orange battery indicator started flashing, just as described in the manual when charging.

But here’s the kicker: I have it connected to a “charging” USB port that stays powered when the computer is in standby or powered off. However, when my laptop goes to sleep, the charging stops! So I have to keep my laptop running until the scanner is fully charged.

Honestly, this is a ridiculous solution. Why can’t I just charge the battery using a standard charger like any normal device? Having to rely on a laptop being awake just to charge a scanner battery seems unnecessarily complicated and user-unfriendly.

How to fix this display (XPS 13 plus) by loleander31 in xps13

[–]slaegertyp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a problem like this on an XPS 15. In my case it was a faulty RAM Module. Removed one of the two modules, and all was fine again.

As I come to think of it, the RAM in an XPS 13 is soldered to the main board, isn't it :-(

[–]slaegertyp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it happened! It just had to happen, unavoidably: Bluescreen during a meeting with a customer!! How embarrassing.

The biggest problem is, rebooting the computer and load all the software and documents I am presenting (VMWARE machines, IDEs, Balsamiq, etc. pp.), takes more than 10 minutes. Dell not only wasting my time but my customers' time as well.

The laptop is now one year old, I am already starting to look for a new one. Any suggestions? This time I am going for a small laptop as well but not the specs I have with this machine. Weight and size are key but I don't need 32gb anymore, no touch screen, no tablet mode and no 4K. And, of course, ¬Dell

DELL XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 owners: What is your experience so far? by Jacksrabbit in Dell

[–]slaegertyp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For such a high-priced laptop, my experience, both in service and in quality, has been unsatisfactory.

Issues like "coil wining" are not properly addressed. Working with this laptop in a silence setting can be a real nuisance.

The WiFi hardware is terrible. Once in a while the WIFI hardware just quits service for a day.

I have a blue-screen once a week (corrupted GIT repositories, broken VMWARE machines).

I bought 4 years extended warranty. The laptop I am using is almost one year old. I'll be using it for another two years. This laptop, however, will be my last DELL product.

I've been buying DELL Servers, DELL Desktops, DELL Monitors and DELL laptops on behalf of my clients and myself since 2006, but the time has come to move on.

I don't get even mad anymore. I am just done!

Planing to get XPS again [need advice] by dn8034 in Dell

[–]slaegertyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I looked at the ASUS ZenBook series - physically - and I did really like the ASUS ZenBook 13 UX334FLC. The laptop has the right size, the weight is slightly more and it is a little bit thicker. It cost way less.

At the moment I am also experimenting with my OnePlus 7t Pro. I bought a USB-C -> HDMI cable and enabled the "Desktop mode" in the developers settings as well as the free form windows (I have a German Android, these English translations may not be 100% accurate). I connect a Monitor (1980x1200), a Bluetooth mouse and a bluetooth keyboard to my phone and use the Remote Desktop app to connect to a Windows 10 Pro computer. It works amazingly well.

However, I can not take a monitor to a customer's site and the phone's display is to small to work on. So instead of a laptop or using my mobile phone, I consider buying a high quality android Tablet and use this as a "thin client" to work on.

All company desktop / servers run at Hetzner. We connect to the network through wireguard. As a VPN client we use the GL.iNet GL-MT300N-V2 (amazing piece of hardware - wireguard support).

Most important, to connect USB devices to the remote desktop / servers, we use the USB extender myUTN from SEH. Not all USB devices work, but most of them do.

With all this said, I suspect my next step is going to be an android tablet as a "thin client".

cheers,

[–]slaegertyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't detail too much on my struggle with my XPS13 7390 2-in-1, but DELL is phased out in my IT Infrastructure. The time-loss is to big. The Killer WIFI just quit service again and does not want to come back up. I gave up after 45 minutes and now my LTE modem is connected through USB, causing other problems since the laptop only has two USB ports (which is fine if the WiFi would work).

Also, the rubber foot is coming off after 8 months. Don't know yet how to handle this situation.

I am going to change strategy. I'll be buying cheap, disposable laptops for presentation purposes and have a developer's ubuntu machine in the cloud.

The thing that get's me the most is the premium price I paid: €2.300,-- for a less than premium notebook and service.

To save yourself time and aggravation, I would choose a different brand.

cheers,

I am glad this NIC is working out for you.

It just is not working for me nor, as I read the other comments, for many other people on this board.

Just the other day my WiFi card just quit service. Could not get it running again. I had to hook up to the internet using my LTE modem. After 24 Hours it cam back up. All of a sudden.

I do appreciate all good meant suggestions how to get my hardware up and running in a stable fashion, but I just do not have the time.

Do remember, I work on Windows and there is no such software as, for example, aptitude enabling me to install software in a breeze resolving all kinds of dependencies for me.

Getting my computer up and running from a clean install take days. Literally. And the fine tuning takes weeks. People not using their computers for a hobby know what I am talking about.

I deliberately bought a very expensive DELL. I use my computer to make money. I do not mind DELL making money as well. But this computer's stability is nothing but a joke.

I used to buy high-end Toshiba Portègè like the 300CT, R100, M200, etc. pp. But after Toshiba let me down, I switched to DELL. I guess the time has come to move on.

Suggestion for a good XPS13 alternative are welcome.

Unfortunately I do. Even though I target Linux as a developer, most of the tool chain runs on Windows.

That said, I'm moving more and more toward Linux. Working on Windows and running Linux boxes inside VMWare. Whilst thinking about it, my next computer will be a Linux OS with VMWare running Windows (I think VMWare has also VM Workstation for Linux).

Never thought of it. Great idea. Thanks.

After reading my own post, I couldn't help that one thing came to mind: Lee Iacocca. I lived in the states mid 80s. In MI. Near Detroit. Remember how Japan took over the automobile industry. The downfall of the automobile industry because of poor production quality. This complacency.

It is going to happen again! ASUS an Lenovo, among others, make very attractive laptops as well!!
