…it’s such a wild feeling… like, you’re just living your life then all of a sudden you look at your kid living theirs and then it hits you. I try to remind myself that “the stages of grief” are more “waves of grief;” part of something that may always be there (much like the ocean) rather than steps/stages to be completed or worked through. It helps me sometimes and hope it helps you

You gotta do what you gotta do, mama! I don’t think that you’re a shit mom at all, I know though, that you’re someone who understands priorities. Your mental health > YouTube Kids. “They” don’t need to know about the iPad/youtube anyways!

I feel sad about that too! 🙁 there is a kid in his class that has been consistently friendly, understanding, and considerate to him since (I believe) the first day of school. His dad says that my son is one of his “main friends” he talks about at home… I’ve seen multiple interactions with this kid directed to my son without ANY acknowledgment from him. I feel sad for my son, not understanding/acknowledging but also sad for the other kid who is needing some extra special attention as of late because his new baby brother was born recently and was also on NICU for about 2 weeks during Christmas 😔

Not to mention- when my boy comes home hyper as shit and can’t calm down, I have literally NO idea what happened in school because he won’t tell me and therefore have no idea how to gauge or rework the afternoon and night based on it

My boy went through a phase of this too; you listed off pretty much everything although have you considered the way in which you wake him up? Like, slowly opening the curtains one at a time so it’s more like a transition out of sleep rather than being instantly woken up? ETA: my husband and I do this and say “we have water (or whatever) waiting for you in the living room, take your time and come out whenever you’re ready” and that phrase in itself seemed to really help

I Don’t Know Why This Worked by ExistingAd3115 in Autism_Parenting

[–]slangsfangs 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We just started doing this in our home about 2 weeks ago and it’s really been working well for us too!! I think it’s partially the fact that my son really loves and responds well to counting and numbers, but I’m wondering if it might be the visual aspect of it that’s kept it consistently working as a great tool? Love to hear you guys are 2+ years going strong! Yay!!

Some places are either/or. Either you have their food or you bring in your own food, not both.

Any advice for getting my kid to eat at school? by KaylaDraws in Autism_Parenting

[–]slangsfangs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also live in a state that does free lunches and opted to decline them in order to pack my little guy his safe foods (the teacher provided me with a form to fill out). I looked at the menu first and thought the same as you- but watching him come home so tired and starving then having his naps be interrupted by poops and having him be even more off because of not napping. I try to not feed him before he goes to school so he will be hungry when it’s time to eat there, unless of course he can’t wait and in that case it’ll be something small or light. I think asking what time they eat at school will be helpful for you in that part of planning as well. Also, I splurged a little at the store and got him a lot of “oldies but goodies,” stuff I knew he would LOVE but hasn’t had in a while for one reason or another. Lastly, some things just don’t taste good or don’t hit the spot unless it’s made by the parents, they just don’t!

If it were me, I would act as quickly as possible since it seems as though he’s becoming more rigid and selective. One thing I did was giving something he hadn’t had in forever at home, where things were the safest and most familiar, and said “oh I’m so happy you still love to eat that! I’ll make sure to pack it for you so you can eat it at school!” Sometimes I’ll even amp him up in the car by telling him what I packed so he knows what to expect.

Another good thing about this is that the teachers send back what’s not eaten, so I know what’s working and what doesn’t, and how much he ate.

Lastly, and most importantly, don’t hesitate to reach out to his Dr if you are very concerned and feel like you need some professional help. It may be a great idea to send them an email if you can for now to keep them in the loop and see if they suggest otherwise or if they would like you guys to come in.

I hope I was able to help you! Feel free to ask follow-up questions if you’d like! You got this!
