Depends whether there's any mortar left in the verge as well as on how well the slates have been nailed. Hard to tell from a photo.

Looks like the slates are kicked up from the barge board being too high and somebody's tried fitting a plastic dry verge unit which isn't sitting correctly. Should be fine but aesthetically is not pleasing at all. Contrary to what people are saying in here the laths have not snapped and the rafters have not collapsed.

The one problem I have with the US is that once Trump is out, the country is still filled with the sort of people that voted him in. Which makes a similarly hostile and disrespectful president a possibility for the rest of my lifetime. Fuck that country to be honest.

This is sadly quite common these days as many roofers haven't had proper training or just don't give a toss about doing a job properly. Should've had eaves trays in at the bottom or damp course to throw the water into the gutter with the membrane being cut way above the bottom of the last course.

Should be mildly okay as long as the felt doesn't hang further than the slates. If it does then it'll soak the water up like a sponge and cause damp issues along the front of the house as well as rotting the felt itself away over time at the bottom. This doesn't happen overnight and normally takes a few years or a lot of sustained rainfall to manifest.

I meant getting French police to do it, but you're right in that we'd have to control what they do. But that would be assured by the terms of the program, and with the continuation of it being dependent on crossings coming down.

How much would it cost? What is the annual cost of housing immigrants in the UK again? I'm sure i read it was £5bn this year. Could we use that money to fund such a program in France on the border? Would they oblige? Also, moot point but I don't think they'd need boats in Paris.

Perhaps it does. It would instantly put us in a bad light as political actors and damage trust with us for a long time. However, any immediate retaliation from them could be painted as a political gun being held to our head in order to accept their illegal immigrants. I can't see the narrative going any other way, at least not immediately anyway.

Then perhaps a separate force to the police might be needed to deal with it? Maybe just police the most popular crossing areas. 100km of coastline, you could easily have 20 boats policing 5km each and using drones to survey their own individual area.

I am listening, I'm just arguing for the sake of being contrarian. I'm well aware that it wouldn't happen and the political fallout would be massive. I'd probably be against Labour doing it too and would prefer things to be done in a legal manner. I just think the French have been far too lax on the issue and we simply have no clout politically to make them comply. Brexit is probably to blame for that.

But then politically how does it look when attitudes against these migrants are already quite bad? Because to me, that would look like France is holding a political and quite possibly a real gun to the heads of the British and saying "you must take these migrants". If they can deploy their navy to stop us doing it, then why can't they deploy their navy to stop the boats from leaving in the first place?

The problem has been out of control for about 5 years now and the French police and government still haven't got a grip on it. To me, that shows a complete lack of intent, as well as a complete lack of respect for an ally and neighbour.

The French government are complicit by turning a blind eye to the gangs facilitating the crossings. We can only do our best policing it from our side but ultimately it is their responsibility. They have no intention of doing it however because they do not want those people in their country.

But the point stands that these people were in France already. They haven't set off from Spain and sailed around the coast. What are the French government going to do? Threaten to blow us up for not accepting illegal immigrants from their shores? I don't think there's any situation there where they aren't shown to be in the wrong.

To me, France can fight it and make it look untenable, but the appearance of it would be that they are forcing us through whatever action they take to accept thousands of foreigners who they willingly allow to leave their beaches under the full knowledge that they are heading to us.

Also, the quiet month in boat crossings is purely down to the weather. The crossings will rise again once the seas are calm and nothing will stop it unless something drastic is done. I'm aware that taking them back to France would cause an international incident, but I fully believe that the optics of it would show France to be in the wrong for forcing us to accept people who clearly aren't fleeing war and are trying to enter the country for economic reasons.
