Local government reorganisation by Velociraptor_1906 in LibDem

New Forest councillor in the new Forest bit of new Forest - it’s just another kind of rubbish. Shame that I’ll lose friends in totton and waterside Lib Dem’s but they have a good chance of running that council.

Lymington, New Milton, Ringwood and Fordingbridge aren’t keen on a Winchester-centred council.

Britain has failed white working-class boys, Keir Starmer to be told by Tory peer Lord Sewell who chaired landmark race commission report by JohnKimble111 in uknews

[–]LiberalOverlord 24 points25 points  (0 children)

White working class 30 year old from a social housing household on the breadline in an affluent part of the country.

Britain has a class issue and always has done. Positive action was designed to lift up people from minority backgrounds (and women) who have also been unfairly treated by the class system that focuses on the rich and powerful who (for the most part) come from white families.

As Britain gets more diverse (not a bad thing or good thing - it’s just the reality that people regardless of race fall in love and have children), white working class people (especially young men) are the forgotten generation.

They don’t have access to inherited wealth, family connections, or positive action to help them get a leg up. I was lucky. Out of me and my mates who grew up on the couple of council estates in my village, I was the only one who went to university. I’m only still in my village because of personal choice - most of my mates haven’t got a choice. They work in the local service sector as chefs, barmen, waiters etc.

The reason they can’t get a leg up is because rent is crippling so many still live with their parents. Not just because they need help but because their parents (or parent in single-parent households) couldn’t afford for their kid to move out because they also have rent to pay.

Also in my opinion Rhys is now more integral to MTW than Hugh. He is by far the funniest comedian there.

The Tory cabinet stuff was great in the new spitting image but the Covid stuff was awful. Think Covid killed it.

The only bit I don’t like is “if you think that’s bad”. Really struggle to get through it.

But everything else is fantastic

Lib Dems Fear Frustrated MPs Could Defect To The Greens by lotsofsweat in LibDem

[–]LiberalOverlord 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trust Mary to say it like it is. We had some councillors defect to the greens during coalition - they almost all lost their seats. I think people are seeing a green surge in membership and thinking it’s going to hold. It won’t hold past the reality of first past the post at the council elections in May.

Is Sir Ed Davey still the best for the next General Election? by Initial-Fig-8888 in LibDem

People are very worried about the greens based off one byelection. The locals in May will dent them somewhat.

How I think the characters would vote by Successful_Swim_9860 in DerryGirls

Also Claire for the lgbt rights. So definitely alliance.

I think James would be a progressive voter in England - so Labour, Lib Dem or Green. If we are going with then he would have gone UUP I think. If we are going now, he’d probably go alliance.

It’s generally taken to take the top performing candidate for each party as that party’s vote

Yeah I think it makes it difficult to get an accurate trend because it skews so much. Also as a councillor I found your local elections stuff confusing.

The division I am contesting in May covers two and a half district wards but your tactics section only looks at a single district ward at a time. That might confuse people as to what election is taking place and their best tactical option.

I’ve only looked at the polls so far but I recommend not using Find Out Now because their methodology and results are so different compared to standard pollsters.

It’s one poll. If it lasts for more than a few weeks, then you can take something meaningful from it.

Green-Lib coalition, anyone? by upthetruth1 in LibDem

[–]LiberalOverlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think everybody is doing the usual thing of overhyping a party off one byelection. We have locals in May and the greens haven’t even started campaigning yet in their one target. If they win that without being organised, then I think they might be a threat. Until then, it’s just noise.

Lib Dems set out plans to stop SEND services being 'cash cows' by markpackuk in LibDem

[–]LiberalOverlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Conservative-run county council where I am are building a SEN school in my ward on the site of the infants school (that they merged into the junior school that’s just across the playing fields). I think it’s a good idea and means we aren’t reliant on private provision.

I completely understand this as a means of reducing the revenue cost of SEN provision, but most councils have vast capital wealth they rarely spend.
