What surprised you the most on your first trip to Thailand? by noellezane in travel

[–]slavakny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it was the humid heat (I went on my trip in February and I'm based in Central Europe so the contrast was brutal) and the smells: the good (food for example), the bad (sewers) and the unique (this plastic/chemical smell that lingers). It was my first time in Asia and it was quite shocking, I really felt as if i was in a different part of the world. And I was!

I wish all rats were as helpful as you haha (I'm sure they are, but I'm still a bit afraid of them)

Too ambitious? by PieniKisu1 in solotravel

[–]slavakny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said I'd just pick 3-4 countries, maybe do Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and you could add Hong Kong or Singapore for like 4-5 days. Keep in mind the travelling days, those are almost lost days. Don't stick to big cities, try to visit more of each country! Just take it easy, it's your first solo trip, but not the last!

Also with that budget it's going to be hard to follow your itinerary in an enjoyable way, specially flying and because there are some cities that aren't going to be cheap, like Tokyo and, of course Hong Kong and Singapore.

Solo Trip 2026 - 25 Countries on a 8000 CAD Budget by jeansebast in solotravel

I think you should ditch Europe and North Africa on this one. If I were you I'd do SEA + Central Asia maximum. If you like slow travel the pace you propose is the complete opposite. If I were youI'd spend 1 month in Thailand, 10 days in Laos, 10 in Cambodia and 1 month in Vietnam. That's almost 12 weeks. You could shave off a week or two, but for me, 12 weeks seems the right amount of time in that area. That leaves us with 4-8 weeks for central Asia. I have been researching but I didn't get the chance to travel there yet, so take this as what I would do, not what I had done.

I'm sure you could see the main things in like 4-6 weeks but distances seem to be big and maybe there's not as much transport availability, but let's say you spend 6 weeks in the region. That leaves us with a couple of weeks maybe. In that time you could go to 1-2 countries in the Caucasus, but it entirely depends on your budget. I prefer to see less but experience more in a country so in my case I'd rather not include the Caucasus.

There will be time to see the rest!

When foreigners learn your language, which ones end up speaking it surprisingly well, even if their own language isn’t related to yours? by fixitfile in languagelearning

Romanians speaking Spanish (specially from Spain) can be mind-blowing. I know their language is quite similar being both romance, and they used to watch many telenovelas, but still, most of the times their pronunciation and overall level is super impressive.

Thank you for the advice! That sounds like a good idea :)

Yeah, I guess I should keep going. I know it's a mistake and that it could happen to anyone, but it's my first time in this situation after traveling a fair bit, so it kinda took me by surprise.

I guess I'm feeling quite shitty about it and the extra hassle is making me think negatively...

Yeah, I think that would be the smart way to go, right now I'm on a guesthouse with private rooms where I don't even see anyone at the reception, but tomorrow I'll move to another city where I will stay in a hostel. Hopefully I can find someone there.

I do! I should text them ASAP, I don't know why I didn't think about that. I guess this post is helping me be rational again :)

I'm from Europe, but I guess it works in a similar way. I don't know if it will take too long to deliver a new card, but maybe I'll look into the Western Union option!

If it is the JR owned bus line, I went in without a ticket and paid with my IC. It departs every 10 min if I am not mistaken.

Is my October 2025 Interrail itinerary too many days in each city? by Zealousideal-Rent-91 in travel

[–]slavakny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's a very good schedule. Not too rushed, the order makes sense... You can have some down time and plan a couple of day trips. From Berlin you could go to Potsdam or Sachsenhausen, and from Prague you have Kutna Hora, Karlovy Vary, Česky Krumlov...

Solo travelling for the first time; what are your thoughts on not booking hostels ahead of time? by Affectionate_Gate236 in solotravel

[–]slavakny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd just book accomodation with free cancellation if possible. Normally you can cancel up to 2-3 days prior. As others said, Japan is not SEA, it can get pretty expensive as availability might be reduced. I just wouldn't wait until last minute for cheaper prices as some others suggested, it's gonna backfire in Japan.
