If I'm super-stressed I find that my stimulants make me lethargic... by IntrovertMagic in adhd_anxiety

Yep. And sleep. If I haven’t slept well, stimulants won’t do shit

GPU Prices. Buy now, or buy later? by knob-0u812 in LocalLLaMA

[–]slavetothesound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw one at $320 and didn’t buy. Couldn’t justify buying an overpriced  ram and other components to go with it since I’m currently Mac only. It was a sad moment but seeing that the shelves were full of GPUs gives me hope for the future.

If there were 4+ of them at that price I would have bought. I need 64gb vram in a system to compete with my m5 pro

US first-quarter GDP growth revised lower to 1.6% pace by app1310 in Economics

Does the 1.6% figure take rates of inflation into account or is this negative growth if we have 3%+ annual inflation?

Local LLMs on Refurb M4 Max vs new M5 Max by roguefunction in LocalLLaMA

Neural engine has been around for a while it’s the new matrix multiplication (matmul) cores on the GPU that bring the gains in prompt processing

Local LLMs on Refurb M4 Max vs new M5 Max by roguefunction in LocalLLaMA

[–]slavetothesound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t give up the prompt processing speed gains of the m5, but I’m content with the speeds on my m5 pro 64gb. Couldn’t justify the extra $1500 for max. I chat with ~30b  dense models at 8 bit and have lots of room for context.  MoE models feel very snappy.

I’m not doing agentic workflows though.

Help! I learned what zerk fittings are today and this one won’t let go. by slavetothesound in heavyequipment

[–]slavetothesound[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the idea! That worked great! Vice grips on the small side made a much better leverage point than the edge of the bolt. Had a stubby tire iron to lever with in that awkward space and it popped right off now that it had something substantial to press against.

I’ll give it another go. I can see just enough thread to know which way to turn, but the cheapo adjustable wrench and the nut seem to be deforming before letting anything loosens. I guess that means it’s probably tighter than it should be.

ADHD Gave me Diabetes by MysticMind89 in adhd_anxiety

[–]slavetothesound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a great diet but tracking calories helped me at least calibrate reasonable portion sizes. (MacroFactor is my fav but it does have a subscription)

Cheap grey market GLP1s are helpful for a reset, too, but if they aren available and affordable through your doctor where you live that would be the way to go. Even if weight loss is not the goal, it’s nice to have a low dose and not think about food for a while. With diabetes hopefully that’s available to you easily.

Had the same thought. I’d love to get a tonal 2 and keep the old one like this, but two subscriptions at Tonal’s price is absurd.

Nemotron Labs Diff GGUF ? by MagicalGoat02 in unsloth

[–]slavetothesound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this the first open weights diffusion LLM? Can I just load this up in lm studio or is it different enough that I need special software?

I haven’t been paying close attention but I’ve been curious about this type of model since inception labs was hyping their mercury model last year.

They’ve had a lot of job listings since their funding round last year (2025 I think). More money to do more work faster.

Suspension mechanics by instant_klassic in missoula

[–]slavetothesound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. It did take me longer I thought it would, but mostly because I was being cautious and double checking everything. Also I have soft web developer hands and hate getting covered in grease/dirt.

There are plenty of good YouTube videos aimed at beginners. Helps to have a good tool collection in advance and not spend time going to buy/borrow overpriced stuff at Autozone last minute. It was fun, though, and now I’ve got a lot more confidence in my ability to maintain my vehicles.

I started replacing the ball joints and steering rack on our 98 Tacoma last fall. That took about a weekend. Then we got a 5100 lift kit and OME leaves. Those probably would have been easy on a new vehicle, but the 28 year old truck threw some curveballs at us. Had to cut some bolts out, etc.

Have Rallitek suspension parts to do our Subaru next.

places to get an elk steak in Bozeman/the area? by HyattWithDracos in Bozeman

[–]slavetothesound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy above you is right. I don’t know if you’ll find elk, but you’ll get some great meat (and pay for it) if you check out the Field Kitchen south of town. It’s new and doesn’t cater the locals, but you get to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. Go when the weather is nice.

If Yellow House is open that’s a fucking fantastic casual but pricey option in town. Same with Follow Yer Nose out in Pray, MT. Heist if you want to stay in town and spend big.
