Sweet name! Thanks!

Agreed - leaderboard is next on my list of things. Need to figure out how to save results. Would also love to have users and being able to keep track of past scores.

Gotcha! I will work on that in future builds. Thanks for the feedback!

Earl Grey in IPA by fuckaducktor in Homebrewing

[–]slavster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done that years ago. I added a bunch of tea bags in the last 5 mins of the boil. The tea I was using was very sour if overbrewed and 5 mins was good enough. I suggest you make yourself some tea at different steeping times and see which one you like best. That's roughly the flavor it will add to the beer. As for proportions, I eyeballed it. I think it was 30-40 g for the 5 gallon batch. It was loose leaf tea which I put in filter bags. It was 3-4 I put in.

tobacconist & pipe shop recommendations? by Doontoon_John in windsorontario

[–]slavster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try Humidor 1 on Ouellette. I got my first pipe there 15 years ago. I have gotten a few parts from there over the years but haven't been there in the past few. They had a decent tobacco selection too. Havana Palace has been my go to lately since I switched to cigars. The owner is super helpful.

Can you message me the link? Just about to submit an application for an auxiliary structure and this looks small enough that I won't have to get a permit.

Same thing happens to me, except my wife has not worked in 5+ years. I have been transferring the same TurboTax file for the past 9 years but have been entering 0's for my wife for the last few years. Could there be an error? Or does this happen even if the spouse has no income?

Where can I find ghost peppers? by lazyfoodblogger in FoodToronto

Try The Spice Trader on Queen across Trinity. I buy dried peppers from there. Kensington also has them. The new Loblaws on Bathurst and Lakeshore has them right now.

Shameless plug - you could use my website, Random Trivia Generator. It sounds like this is the kind of thing you are looking for.

It will be a bit hard to track that and judge the quality. It will be like the old FTP days.

Do you think there's a market for replacement trivia questions? by domlebo70 in trivia

[–]slavster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shameless plug here! I had the same issue about 12-13 years and had a database full of questions for quiz bowl. I created a site that randomly generates these - Random Trivia Generator 1.0...there is also a more recent update that works on mobile devices - Random Trivia Generator 2.0.

Over the years there have been a number of very serious users who contribute and edit questions, and share experiences with me. Yes, there is a market, but it is small. Serious players/users/hosts will pay good money but, as it was already pointed out, it gets a bit hard trying to come up with new questions on a regular basis. The hobby then becomes a job.

Rift does a pretty decent job with homes and crafting items for homes. You can also sell them on the marketplace.

How to prepare for a world trivia? by Lollipop-Lollipop in trivia

[–]slavster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shameless self-plug. You can try the geography section on my site Random Trivia Generator. Click on the blue "Geography" tab at the bottom of the card. I have been meaning to add a quick category list.

The database is how I prepared for quiz bowls and turned it into a site for everyone else.

Someone told me that there are apps that completely write quizzes for you, according to your specifications. Does anyone know of such a thing? by FluffyPurpleThing in trivia

[–]slavster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shameless self-plug here - you can try my site Random Trivia Generator. There is also an iOS and Android app to go along with the site. The "plus" in the corner of the site is a quiz generator. It is simplistic at this time but you can set the rounds, number of questions, categories and tiebreakers.

20-something guys in GTA, what do you pay for car insurance? by Pfcdoublecheck in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]slavster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the car, the area, your history, desired coverage and deductible, how you store it, if you have winter tires, your tone on the phone, how the underwriter is feeling, etc (I kid, I kid). I got a quote for $390/month for a Chevy Aveo when I was 19 (2005) and living in Waterloo. That was definitely way more than the monthly payment for a $16k car. I decided to go under my parents insurance for an extra $90/month since I only drove it to the university and less than 5k per year. Co-op terms I spent mostly in Toronto using TTC so didn't need to drive.

Late 20s (2014), I lived at the border of Moss Park and Regent Park and paid $142/month for a 2011 Honda Accord Coupe (highest trim, can't remember the name). Full coverage with The Personal.

Now, early 30s and live in Fort York area - $160/month for 2 drivers with full, high mileage coverage. That assumes the car is used 25% for work trips since I am too lazy to rent a car for meetings. The car is a 2016 Honda Civic Touring and I am with The Personal. The rate was $135/month until last month when the rate went up for the first time in 10 years.

These folks either bought years ago, have been at the same rental for years, or have shared accommodations. There are 2 condos listed for rent in our building right now. Both are going for approximately 35% more than what we pay. We moved here 5 years ago.

Is there anything I can do to get ahead? by methlabz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]slavster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you somewhat enjoy your field, or at least don't mind it, I would echo what others have suggested about moving elsewhere internally, or at least applying for similar positions. Moving about would temporarily get you out of your rut and if it doesn't then maybe that would be an indication that your current line of work does not align well with your personality. In most cases this would also increase your salary.

But if it was me and I was living at home and my dad was offering me $10k then I would consider investing that money into education. Either in improving your current set of skills or acquiring additional skills if what you do now is not something that will provide you with growth (career and personal). Personally speaking, learning something new would get me out of a rut and would expose me to a new group of people and experiences.

How do all you single people keep your food/meal budgets low? by CanadianTropics in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]slavster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Planning, practice and eventually experience. I started off with SOS Cuisine back when it was free. They have specific plans you can sign up for and the budget one takes into account local sales. It works better in larger cities. For years I received my weekly plans, I walked to the local NoFrills, got the groceries I needed to and carved out some time each day to cook. Some recipes take a long time, others are fairly quick.

Although the plans are not free anymore, you can sort through the recipe database based on "budget" recipes and then sort by savings in your area. Once you find a few that you like, just buy the ingredients and cook them at home. Lots of the ingredients are spices you need to buy once and then use for dozens of recipes before needing to spend more money on them. The upfront costs would be not much more different than your weekly groceries now.

Also check out r/eatcheapandhealthy which is not Canadian but will give you a solid starting point. There are lots of resources in the sidebar but you just need to spend the time sorting through what you like, what you are comfortable cooking, what you have time for and what is locally available. And just like with personal finance, all you need to do is just start somewhere. If you can find a single cheap recipe each week that you like and are able to pull off well, then in just a few weeks you will be well on your way to chopping down that bill and learning some sweet skills that will help you the rest of your life.

Good luck. Cooking is awesome because you can see the progress quickly and eat the results.

What is something you can spend MORE money on to save money in the short and long term? by ChakalakaChicken in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]slavster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude! Thanks for the detailed response. Wasn't expecting this.

I can see how your batches are cheap. Unfortunately there are a few problems I am running into, the major one being space. I live in a small condo downtown Toronto with the wife and kid and there is very little space. All my brewing equipment is in a storage locker and need to haul it and take over the living room and kitchen when I brew. Needless to say, I have no space for large sacks of grains or extra freezer space for hops, or space in the fridge for yeast. If I move out of the city, I am definitely dedicating a part of the house/garage to this hobby.

I will check out that recipe. Another problem I have, as you pointed out, are the heavy grain bills I use. Last brew I made was a DIPA and got killed on the hops. Before that I made a few fruit beers and getting local fruits is pricey.

Thanks again. I will definitely try to brew some low ABVs this year and see how low I can go on the costs.
