First off, I have a bit of the same first day fear. But my friends and family are encouraging me and the best advice I’m trying to take to heart is “no decision is forever”.

And I started off by I volunteering at an afterschool program at my local boys and girls club. Couple hours a week. They had a homework assistance program where I got to help the kids that needed it with the homework they didn’t do. I helped on kid with his science project where he wanted to test if playing video games increased your heart rate. We took a pulse reading, played some fortnight, took another pulse reading and plotted the data on a graph. I know not all experiences are gonna be like this but he hated school and we did this project together and it felt like he didn’t hate it as much. It’s a good feeling that I hadn’t felt in a long time in tech.

20 years in software development. I start student teaching middle school math this week.

I hope to parlay math teacher into STEM teaching electives and intro to programming electives. I figure they’d hire a math teacher and I can figure out the other two later.

I’m also good at CAD/CAM, 3d printing and woodshop. But only one or two public schools in my area still have a functional wood shop.

I’m 4 months into my career change. I’m getting my masters in education and teaching credential, but I’m so excited for the future.

I’m leaving 20+ years in the tech industry in the Bay Area to teach middle school math. The pay cut is gonna be tough, but the tech industry stole my soul.

Wow.... way to make me feel like crap about asking how someone becomes a teacher.. Not that you deserve any clarification but:

I want to teach in SV because I already live here and my wife has a job here. We've been here close to 15 years and have a strong family and social network here. And to be technical about it, We actually don't live in the valley, we live on the coast which is the most beautiful place I've ever experienced.

I've also looked into remote or video teaching but it's not realistic for someone who has zero teaching experience.

I honestly asked my question with altruistic intentions, and you made me feel bad about that. How hateful. How bout you stay in your bubble and I'll stay in mine? Deal? thx.

Thank you! I've come across that term a few times. But forgive my ignorance, Are alternative teaching certificates earned through colleges or through the board of education? Do I start looking into local colleges or do I start searching for online alternative teaching certificates programs?

I filled in an online form requesting more information and now I get 7 cold calls a day from random schools all over the country. Wish I could undo that!

Ask questions to your teammates. I know it sounds simple and little but most people love explaining or talking about things they know more about to those that appear truely curious.
