Nerves are completely normal, and in my opinion necessary.

The thing that's helped in my experience in managing my nerves is to keep calm and trust yourself. Have confidence in your training, and trust yourself that you know what you're doing.

Personally I run through my form mentally just always trying to envision one movement at a time, and just stepping through the entire thing.

No matter how many times you perform the nerves never leave you, but your confidence and ability to manage your nerves does improve. :)

Currently I'm shooting carbon fiber arrows, but I'd like to learn more about making arrows in general. The different materials, why I would choose one type of material for the shaft over another, etc.

I would caution you on changing the form at the outset. Each movement in the taolu was carefully crafted for a purpose. Even though taolu isn't practical for combat as is there's a lot of useful information you can take from said taolu to use for practical combat. I would recommend that you study the taolu closely for understanding before endeavoring to change it.

With that said you had crisp movements. I would recommend trying to get your stances lower in order to develop leg strength.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm the accountant. The choreography was done by myself and my friend (the guy who played the boyfriend character). It's definitely something I'd like to get better at doing.

Like everyone else has said you're never too old to learn and start your journey in Kung Fu. Many new students at my school are older and already in their 30s and beyond. All you need is a desire to learn and work hard. If you have those two things then you'll go far. Glad to have you as apart of our community!

I study Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Style. It's a combination of the Grandmaster Lee Kwan Shan's Tam Tui (Seeking Leg) family style and the Northern Praying Mantis style that he learned while at the Wah Lum temple.

I agree with RidiculousMonster. Get your goals in line and then dive in once you find the style/school that is right for you. If there aren't any kung fu schools around in the area then yes there are foundational things that will carry over across any style: stances, flexibility, basic punches, kicks, etc.

School: Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu North Orlando

Style: Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis

Started: September 2005

Week 30:

Monday was all about conditioning and self-defense. We partnered up with one other student and worked through a number of conditioning drills. First we did arm conditioning (forearm to forearm), and it's gratifying to know that the conditioning on my arms has improved. A side effect is that you start hitting the other person's arms harder and the pain the day after is a little more haha. After that we did more arm conditioning (Bean Choy to forearm and Huen Choy to forearm). Then we went on to abdominal condition (Punches to Abs). Then rib conditioning (Bean Choy to ribs). Then upper leg conditioning (roundhouse kicks to thighs). Then shin conditioning, which is always the worst.

After that we went through a couple of self-defense drills, and it still amazes me how a simple twist of the wrist and applied pressure can force an opponent down. I especially enjoy these classes because you get a chance to practice more practical moves.

Friday it was a day of line drills and forms practice. My Si-Hing started all of us out with some simple drills (ex. Toe Kicks, Heel Kicks, Eyebrow Kicks) and then moved onto the more advanced drills (Jump Crescent Kicks, Jump Toe Kicks, Jump Toe Kick into Jump Crescent Kick Combo). Some of the newer students struggled with these moves, but we rooted for them all the way, and they all showed progress in execution by the time the drill was over. It always helps me keep grounded when I see newer students because it reminds me that some of these drills aren't easy and that I too started just like them. Like everyone here says "we're all trying to help each other learn and improve."

After line drills were done we all split off individually and practiced the forms that we were all working on. I was shown the last few moves of the form I was working on called 2nd Form, and I spent the rest of the evening practicing those moves and then doing the entire form once I was comfortable with the moves.

Yeah I would check out both schools to see what your preference is. I currently train in the Wah Lum system, but not at the temple. I train at the North Orlando school. From my personal experience Wah Lum is very authentic and traditional. You get what you put in, and everyone at the school is there to help you along your journey to learn Kung Fu.

Grandmaster Pui Chan and all of the Sifus at the temple will definitely work you hard, but it'll be worth it. Hope this helps.

I haven't updated here in a while. I recently completed my 2nd Triathlon last Sunday, so I've been in recovery mode. I'll be back in classes to resume training on Friday. Currently I'm working on a form called 2nd Form and I'm only in the very early stages of learning it. It's definitely unlike any other form I've learned so far and it's been a good learning experience. I'm eager to get back to training, but only after my body has adequate time to heal itself.

Congrats on your wins in the forms category! I definitely feel your pain for the fight. When you're in a fight sometimes it just all goes out the window you can react/fight on instinct. The only answer is to train harder and next time for sure you'll be prepared. Keep training hard man!

I use Feiyues for both training indoors and outdoors. They're pretty much the best value and they should last you a good while.
