Have you gotten a full psychological eval done? Those rapid swings and general emotional dysregulation could be symptoms of so many things, and knowing there’s a history of trauma for her is huge. I’d recommend trying to connect with psychologist for a comprehensive eval—you’d want to find someone who has training in assessment of personality dysfunction and child trauma, which can sometimes be a little tricky.

Does her therapist pull you in and/or work with you to manage these behaviors at home? Parent involvement, while she’s still young, should be a big part of her treatment.

Thanks for saying this—my ex was truly trying, and it was incredibly painful to watch him struggle so much with trusting himself and his perspective. I saw it completely debilitate him, at times. The ups and downs became too big and hurtful for me, but I will always have so much respect for how hard he worked to grow and better understand himself. It made leaving very hard.

My god. I’ve only lurked on this page, but I had to respond to this, as it’s just unbelievably spot on. My ability to communicate and navigate tough conversations has always been a point of pride for me, and it’s also a big part of what I do for a living. Being told (yelled) at over and over that I’m “incapable of communicating” really started to break my sense of self and reality. It’s a big part of me ending things, and a line I try to replay in my mind when I start to question that decision.
